Hi there! As a former Korail employee, and currently working at KR(Korea National Railway), I'm answering 10:27. It's because the trolley line and signal system are currently designed to be 300~320km/h, so it couldn't run to 330km/h for safety. In addition, in Korea's Rolling Stocks Technical Standard, the max design speed is designated as 1.1 times(110% = 330km/h) the max operating speed. So as you said, 330km/h is theoretically possible, but it's hard to speed up in the current state...😂 However, many discussions for HSR's speed improvement are continuing in preparation for Pyeongtaek Osong High Speed Rail THX :)

I used to live in Korea, and I miss using the trains here. So affordable and reliable! Even the older and slower trains were great. Korea can teach the UK a thing or two.

@@MartinBrezhello sir, please forgive me if I offend you with this comment. I don't know much about korea, but I have seen that south korea is a very small country in size. No disrespect. I just want to know why such a small country needs a high speed rail ? Because every major places should be near. I just want to clear my doubt.
@RailloGo
@RailloGo Ай бұрын
@@arnoygayen1984This is my guess... Unlike the UK, Korea has many mountains, so I think the winding lines of the existing railways connecting the major cities are one of the reasons for installing high-speed railways. If you use a 130 km/h train running on the existing railways, it takes nearly 6 hours to get from Seoul to Busan, which can be tiring and painful for train users. On the other hand, a 300 km/h train can travel in 2 hours.

10:07 Fun fact: the Line 1 train on the other side is the only metro train in Seoul that uses HSR tracks. From Geumcheon-gu Office to Gwangmyeong station, its diverted from the Line 1 tracks and onto the Gyeongbu HSR. Its frequency is just 1 train per hour, as its crucial to match the KTX schedules but also not impacting any KTX services and its frequencies. It was scheduled to be replaced by Seoul's Line 10 subway in the 90s, but the IMF crisis led to the scrapping of the project. Its successor, the Sin-Ansan Line, will replace the service in the coming years.

20:23 : It's an old railway bridge and train trailers converted in a restaurant and café ( 비비정예술열차 ), everything is a potential café in Korea haha. Btw next time you come in Korea try the new KTX-Cheongryong, it's almost the same as KTX-Eum rolling stock (distributed) but with a higher speed, it's developed from the prototype HEMU-430. I didn't try it yet but it seems to be the ultimate high speed train ! Also you should try the ITX too, it's the EMU service made to replace the Mungunghwa, there are 2 different rolling stocks with one not yet introduced (I think), if you want more information you should look on namu wiki instead of wikipedia, it's only in Korean but you can translate easily.

Thank you for a fantastic review! Just a few facts cuz my dad was in charge of technology transfer between Korea, SNCF and Alstom for the first batch of KTX I. The first high speed section from Seoul to Osong is built under the strict management of the french engineers. The rest of the high speed lines including Honam line are built by Koreans. According to some Korean engineers there’s a issue with korean built section of tracks, unlike the french line which is almost impeccable. Still, Im very thankful for all the efforts put in to hst between sncf and korail! If not France, korea would be running type 300 series Shinkansens, as this was one of the competitors at that time, along with ICE 1. Anyways, Hope you enjoy the trip!

Just a TMI about the name: like you said, Sancheon was derived from Sancheoneo (cherry salmon), but on its own, it also means "mountains and rivers," which is pretty apt considering the train traverses through and over the country's mountains and rivers.

12:35 The TTX used computer tilting, and was aimed to be introduced in the old Jungang Line, where trains are subject to many curves. However, it was decided that banking the curves, as well as straightening the line was more economical, thus the project was scrapped. There aren't any conventional lines that can support speeds higher than 150kph anyway. The Jungang Line is currently at the end stages of renovation, and the 230kph KTX-Eum runs on the segment that has already been renovated and electrified. At least they learned that the EMU technology for high speed trains is a better way forward. The TTX was then used for some internet testing, and stored in the yard. The end cars of the TTX is now preserved in a railway high school and a mechanical technical high school. HEMU-430x was a prototype for the third gen HST, the KTX-Eum and KTX-Cheongryong. No commercial 400kph HSTs have been developed yet, as no line supports speeds up to 400kph. However, the quad-tracking of the Pyeongtaek-Osong HSR would support speeds up to 400kph, and the upcoming renewal of the Gyeongbu HSR tracks and signalling for speeds at or higher than 320kph is anticipated, so we will definitely see a fourth-gen HST with those speeds soon. Earlier this year, they have unveiled the HSEMU-370 project, with a much more sleek design compared to the third-gen HSTs. Those sets are the ones that will eventually replace the first-gen KTX trains in around 2032-2038. These trains will cut journey times from Seoul to Busan to just 1 hour and 50 minutes!

TIP. You can find the 1st class amenities at 15:45. Some bottles of water and mini-snack boxes are located on the left & right side of the seat. These are provided for 1st class passengers. (You can take it on your own if you are 1st class passenger) I know that there's no english explanation for the 1st class amenities (written in Korean only), so many foreign people didn't know about that amenities, and it's a little bit regrettable for KORAIL.

I worked on the contract for the series 1 rolling stock and fixed equipment between 1998 and 2004 with the French contractor. This brought back many happy memories of that project. The section around Osong was used as the initial high speed test track and IIRW there was a theft one weekend of the copper catenary wire. We never really worked out how it had been done.

Another way to look at the South Korean high-speed Network they have help from the French SNCF to make it a network. 10 years ago one can actually reach ICN by KTX from Busan. If they were to make the same thing for Europe it needs to have pairs of Pantographs Metalized Carbon 1.95m for DC🇳🇱🇫🇷 and AC 15kv 16.7hz AC seen in 🇩🇪🇦🇹 1.45m Copper strip AC 25kv 50hz and 15kv 16.7hz AC CFF DC 3kv Italy. Try using the Italian/Swiss Pantagraph strip 1.45m on a German and Austrian 15kv 16.7hz you will actually get a power lock situation. Metalized Carbon pantograph has to be used for their 15kv 16.7hz AC territories. Excellent video overall

Greetings from an American expat in Arcachon! Did you get a chance to visit Yeosu on your Korean trip? It's a wonderful city. IIRC, the name means "beautiful waters". I lived in Korea for 9 months in 1999 on a consulting assignment. 3 days/week in Seoul, 1 day/week in Inchon and 1 day/week in Yeosu, taking the first flight in the morning, working all day and then flying back to Seoul in the evening. One day in Yeosu, my client decided to take the day off and acted as a tour guide, taking me to many interesting places known to the locals. Super cool!

@@Desi365 No, not JUST the oysters. LOL My niece, who was 5 when my brother met her French mother, needed moral and financial support after a nasty divorce. My brother never treated her as his own, so I've been her protector for the last 45 years. She lived here, so I sold my house in Flagstaff and moved to Arcachon with my 3 small dogs. I had to buy 3 seats for the flight to Paris. Ha. I've been here 3 years now and love it. Never going back to the States.

What is the drink on the tray with Detroit Michigan stamp. I'm flying to Detroit next week from Washington, DC because Amtrak train service is slow and mediocre. I'd either have to ride to Chicago 285 miles west of Detroit and catch a train back to the Motor City or get off the train at Toledo, Ohio and transfer to a bus in the wee hours of the morning. No can do.

Hey, if you're going to use the Honam HSR or the Jeolla Line to Yeosu-Expo, Iksan, Jeonju, and Mokpo, then Yongsan station just south of Seoul station would be a better choice. That's where almost all Honam line trains depart and terminate.

Operation speed rarely matches design speed. The faster the train the more track wear and tear and enhanced safety precautios. A few mintes gained is not worth the added cost of maintenance and will not attract additional passengers.
