One other issue I forgot to mention in this video is the wheel clamps rattle terribly! I am working on a fix and will post a video once I have sorted it out. :)
@EarlGreyIslander Жыл бұрын
I have the Piston SR and it rattles like crazy. The universal mount is also poorly designed, IMO. Metal on metal. Universal installation method doesn't work well -- the rack is movable back and forth along the length of the rack -- mounting brackets don't move, but the unit slides along the t-channel on the rack. They need to provide a rubberized coating on the mounting brackets to save your crossbars from getting trashed during install. T-channel installation method seems to work well though, but again it's metal on metal. The mounting brackets tighten up against the metal crossbars and the crossbars get scuffed quite easily by the rack. I feel like they built a solid rack and really overlooked a few obvious details, especially for the money.

@@EarlGreyIslander Hey, thanks for taking the time to comment. I haven’t had the opportunity to be hands-on with the SR yet but you did a really good describing the issue and I can appreciate any metal on metal is far from ideal. Have you seen the ‘Rattle Fix’ video? [Rattle Fix - KUAT Piston Pro X kzbin.info/www/bejne/i56yln-ea7SirNk]. In hindsight I think the pressure of the tires would have been sufficient to prevent any rattling with the bikes loaded, but I do like the paint-protection it provides. Re: your SR - without knowing the exact nuances the first time that comes to mind would be a simple 1” OD rubber gasket where the bolt passes through. Alternatively, you could use a robber coating like Plastidip. Lastly, there is single-sided adhesive rubber strips. I’ve used these on my rooftop tent project. Once I have the opportunity to look at the SR in person I’ll post a follow-up.
@EarlGreyIslander Жыл бұрын
@@GREYWOLFbike Good ideas re: gasket etc. They should address tire pressure in the manual if it makes a difference. The NV2.0 user guide calls out tire pressure, but nothing's noted in for the Piston SR; they say tires should be properly inflated and leak-free, which makes sense. I tried mounting my gravel bike with lower tire pressure and with "riding pressure" and the rattle is consistently loud and annoying at lower speeds. What is your specific recommendation re: pressure?
@GREYWOLFbike Жыл бұрын
@@EarlGreyIslander The lowest I’ve had in my tires is ~20PSI due to me forgetting to inflate them before I left the house lol.
@EarlGreyIslander Жыл бұрын
@@GREYWOLFbike I think I solved the rattling. I pulled each arm in a little more equal on each side until the tire cradles contact the tire. Then I tighten each one up quite snug. It's easier with the gravel bike, which has a shorter wheelbase, but it's a little tougher with the mountain bike (XL-size frame). The tighter the better. No rattle at all with the gravel bike. A much more subdued rattle with the MTB mounted, but that only comes from the rear tire cradle. I have to step up (using a step or open the doors and stand on the door sill) to pull the arms 1-2 clicks more to get them good and snug. Note that I am 6' 5" tall, so shorter folks might have more difficulty. Thanks for your detailed review, plus your feedback.

Hey, thanks so much for taking the time to comment. As you’ve probably noticed, I haven’t uploaded much this year at all. It was a lousy spring east of the Rockies and there was a bunch of behind-the-scenes stuff that really destroyed a lot of my motivation to make bike content this year. I’ve been saying for a while I really want to make long-format adventure/cycling videos and I’ve been trying to work up to that, but to make it happen requires a lot of financial support and -understandably- to get that support companies want eyeballs and thus expect content creators to have 30,000-50,0000 subscribers before they’ll even talk to you. I understand this, but it’s the catch-22 of being a ‘little guy’. Never fear, I haven’t given up on the channel. Far from it in fact. I’m just reevaluating what content I want to make and what my goals for it are. At the end of the day, I just want to make good content. I feel like there’s a HUGE delta between what I desire to produce and what I’m currently capable of, but I’m committed to moving forward in some way, shape, or form. Thanks again for the kind words. :)

I’ve had mine for 6 months and had two major issues. First, the lights cable got pinched when I folded the rack up. It shorted out and had to be replaced. Second, and more troubling, my right light went out. Kuat confirmed they were aware of the problem and several months later sent me a rebuild kit. I had to take it to a dealer to have it installed. Still waiting on it to confirm it fixed the problem. Finally, even in the loading position, a truck tailgate will not open fully. It rests on the rack, risking damage to the tailgate if you put any weight on it. I should also note the rack is very heavy and difficult to get on and off. Overall, I wish I had gone with a 1UP and saved my money.
@GREYWOLFbike Жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for taking the time to share your experiences. As I shared in the video, my cable sustained a pinch somehow, though I’m still not 100% sure on the mechanism. I have also been experiencing inoperable lights as well. If you remove the bike tray with the included Allan key you’ll see three electrical contact points which rely on spring-loaded pins to sustain surface contact. This is less secure than a traditional electrical connector and allows for water ingress past the thin weatherstripping which then corrodes this connection resulting in loss of operation. If you clean the contact surface area and apple a dielectric grease this will resolve your issue, but as a fellow consumer who has no affiliation with KUAT, I understand your frustration. I believe at this price point, expectations are very high.
@WOV49 Жыл бұрын
@@GREYWOLFbike My local bike shop (Kuat dealer) still has my rack. They have no idea what to do with the rebuild kit and are waiting for Kurt to provide guidance. This appears to be a systemic problem, not just a failure to clean issue. Had I known how extensive the problem was I would have sent the whole thing back. Totally inexcusable for such an expensive rack. My advice to buyers is look elsewhere for a rack.
@GREYWOLFbike Жыл бұрын
This is not a ‘failure to clean issue’; cleaning is likely the solution to your problem. I agree, it shouldn’t be required, but if the difference between spending 5-minutes to clean the electrical contacts and having an operational rack versus it sitting at your local shop (it’s literally one bolt using the supplied Allan wrench), I’m choosing the 5-minute clean. Now, I’m not familiar with this ‘rebuild kit’ you’re discussing but I’d wager it’s just a new electrical contact. I’ll contact KUAT tomorrow to see if they’re willing to send me a kit so I can upload an instructional video.

Great video. We're also in AB and use a rooftop tent, and I'll be watching your Pivot video momentarily.. full tailgate access is required for a super pacific with drawer system. The 1up, Quikr, and Piston Pros all have my attention. I feel like for a two-bike tray with swing out, the Piston Pro (non-X) for 2k CAD will come out ahead of 1600 CAD + shipping + taxes for the 1up. I think I can live without brake lights & kashima, especially after reading all the comments regarding electrical issues.
@GREYWOLFbike8 ай бұрын
Yeah, the electrical issues are real but actually quite straightforward. The way the brake lights get their power is through a contact interface with spring-loaded pins (same as an iPad and keyboard). There’s a rubber seal around the connector but it’s insufficient to prevent water ingress (likely during power washing). This results in the contact surface developing surface corrosion. I’ve honestly been meaning to make a video about the electrical issues and service but I got denied for being a KUAT ambassador despite them asking me to apply, then my Crankworx videos absolutely tanked, and I’m still struggling with my 6-year old iPad crashing while attempting to edit videos. All that combined felt like a kick in the teeth and I really lost a lot of motivation. That said, it’s probably for the best because I’ve decided to stop chasing the weekly videos (that was a 2023 goal) and instead focus on developing the long-format videos I’ve always wanted to make. It means a lot more time filming and editing and fewer videos overall, but I hope people will appreciate the quality over quantity. Anyway, the fix for the electrical issue is just remove the tray, use a little abbrasive to clean the surface, and maybe hit it with some dielectric grease to resist the water. You can also go the full extent of replacing the entire wiring with a free kit from KUAT, but personally I don’t plan to do this.

Can you open the tailgate without it hitting the pedals on the bike and will it accommodate a 4 inch fat tire?
@GREYWOLFbike Жыл бұрын
Just to clarify, are you asking with the Piston Pro X mounted to the Pivot V2 as I have, or by itself? If mounted to the Pivot V2 there isn’t really any reason to do this because it will be very awkward and defeat the purpose of the Pivot V2. Nevertheless, if you orient the pedal of the bike closest to the truck upwards, you should be able to open the tailgate. If you are asking whether you can open it without the use of the Pivot V2 with bikes loaded, no - this is not possible. I even doubt you could open the tailgate with one bike loaded in the furthest position and using the tilt feature of the rack. Re: 4” tire compatibility, that’s a good question. The limiting factor would be the width between the arms. I’ll go measure it and then report back, so check this message for an update in a few minutes. Update: according to the KUAT website the Piston Pro X is said to carry up to 5” tires, however I measured the max width as 4.75”. Either way, 4” will fit.

Hey, great question. KUAT offers a ‘fender kit’ which consists of two straps. :S It’s pretty low tech, but what you do is lower the tire bracket below the fender and then strap the wheel to the arm because the contact point is not able to hold the bike in this position. Personally, I like VOLE straps and if you get the ‘strap keepers’ for $5, the probability of them coming undone would be exceptionally low while also being kind to your wheels.

So I had a chance to try my Piston Pro this winter to get to the trails in Edmonton's river valley. I would have to rate this rack totally unsuitable for winter riding. The reason being is that the pistons stop functioning at anything past about -5C. The arms move but they won't click into place so the bike can't be secured to the rack making it totally useless. In addition to that, the studded 45 North Dillinger 5's on my fatbike and Schwalbe Ice Piker Pros on my ebike just shred the powder coated finish even after I put down several layers of duct tape to protect it. So much for my almost $3000 rack. I ended up using my wife's $500 Swagman rack for winter riding.

This is really interesting for two reasons; first, I intentionally left the rack on all last year for durability testing and didn’t once experience issues. In fact, I drove to Bellingham, WA and back in -15˚C and never experienced any issues, so I’m honestly not sure what to suggest. Was there excessive snow or ice build-up on the rack? Second, yes - studded tires and painted surfaces aren’t a great combo. Instead of duct-tape, my suggestion would be to get a roll of 2” wide ‘grip tape’. I have some from Amazon and it’s basically 120grit sandpaper with an adhesive back. This will resist the spikes a lot better than soft tapes and it’ll still work in the summer with non-studded tires.

Another issue: when you connect the led lights, your vehicle thinks you are towing a trailer and turns off your Blind Spot Sensors. That annoys me a bit, but I do love the rack still!
@GREYWOLFbike Жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for the comment. My current truck is too old and doesn’t have Blind Spot Sensors, but that’s very valid. On the other hand, have you experimented with unplugging the rack and seeing if the rack + bikes interfere with the Blind Spot Sensors? Perhaps turning them off is the lesser of two evils.

That White logo doesn't really bug me. Having my license plate obscured does, which can easily get you a traffic stop. Why don't you have the license plate adapter?
@GREYWOLFbike7 ай бұрын
My license plate isn’t really obstructed. It’s visible between the wheels of the bike, but some places (lower mainland BC) can be real sticklers about that sort of thing, so I suppose it really depends on your area.

My old frame was fine until I purchased a carbon frame. Then I thought I'm not letting that hang my its top tube. As for the plate I drive a Tahoe but this new rack covers it, and I know it does so not going to lie to myself by playing out what obscured means to some cops. That plate adapter cost way less than a ticket from a ticket happy popo officer who write 100 tickets a month.

For those in the States, note the cost is in American dollars, $1,389.00. But I have a wiring problem. I wonder if Kuat had a problem or if the dealer who put the after-market wiring. My dash says bulb failure. I am trying to find someone in the neighborhood to who I can attach the wiring and see if it also gives the error of bulb failure. I also paid $99 for the extended ramp to put my sixty-pound e-bike on the rack and twenty dollars for a strap for my 20-inch fat tire e-bike. The belt is needed because my e-bike has a rear fender that would get in the way.

@@GeorgeAlexa okay, that’s good you were able to eliminate the rack as the cause of the problem. I’ve seen ‘fast flash’ issues with vehicles where people have replaced traditional filament bulbs with lower-draw LED bulbs, but I’ve never heard of that happening with trailer wiring since they should be pulling from the existing brake light harness and thus additive to the electrical load. I would start with consulting with whomever installed your trailer wiring and go from there.

Crazy life now with helping elderly parents, one with Alzheimer’s. I woke up this morning realizing that OUR BIKES HAVE REAR RACKS AND FENDERS! How are they going to work on our $1500 rack?!?!? Came right to Google to see what other folks have done. Not a single mention of rear racks with or without baskets on them! I have some ideas… but…
@GREYWOLFbike7 ай бұрын
KUAT sells a ‘fender kit’ which essentially consists of two straps. I’ve used rubber VOLE ski straps to transport bikes with full fenders. If you’re going to do this regularly, I highly recommend purchasing some VOLE strap keepers as well. They keep the loose tail from flapping around as well as reduce the likelihood of it releasing because the strap is doubled-over on itself.

That’s awesome! Both I and the KZbin algorithm appreciate it. Lol. To be honest, the brake lights were a big deal for me. Where I live there are some pretty conservative insurance policies re: at fault so I wasn’t taking any chances, especially considering it’s mounted to the Pivot V2 which extends the 2-bike carrier quite a ways from the rear of the vehicle and certainly greater than the 1meter (3ft) requirement for flagging tape or an aux brake light. I also really like the no-frame-contact style of this rack. That’s not to say I haven’t experienced issues with it which I will address in a long-term review video at some point (maybe in the fall) but overall it’s been great.

Hey, I really appreciate your comment (seriously). I actually just finished replying to another comment saying how I had applied (and was turned-down) to be a KUAT ambassador, so like you - I’m just a regular consumer. And as a consumer, I just want companies to make the products I want to buy (lol). I could be wrong, but I actually think the Piston Pro X is the most expensive hitch-mount bike rack on the market, so yeah - like you, I don’t want to spend my money on something that’s not going to live-up to expectations. It’s perhaps worth noting that one core principle I hold for all the GREYWOLF channels is to only feature products I like and would recommend to others. That’s not to say products won’t appear in other videos (such as installing a new accessory or something), but I have intentionally not published product reviews on things I don’t recommend. It’s sort of my way of avoiding publishing a negative review so I can walk the fine line between honest feedback and not alienating myself from companies that do make great products, maybe just not the one I used.

I purchased mine back in November as a ‘floor model’ because the 2” receiver model was in very short supply at the time, so I didn’t have the opportunity to see how it was packaged. I’ve been exploring platform racks and I don’t see how this appeals over 1up or the Rocky Mounts Guiderail. Kashima coating and LED lights don’t make the rack worth the cost. The Guiderail also has an amazing chain lock integrated.
@GREYWOLFbike Жыл бұрын
I just watched a video of the Rocky Mounts Guiderail and a few things really stand out. First, the Guiderail requires two tools to remove a nylon nut and washer, then remove a bolt and repeat the process just to adjust tire size. This is a dealbreaker for me who will carry my friends bikes and it takes seconds without tools to adjust on the Piston Pro X. Second, while the Guiderail does have an anti-rattle system, it requires another tool (ratchet wrench) and socket to adjust it. All KUAT models use a standard Allan-wrench and the Piston Pro X has one built into the rack. So for anyone who works in the city and doesn’t want to drive around with their rack on the vehicle all the time, this is a much easier system to use. I’d also like to address the LED lights. If someone rear-ended me while carrying my bike and I didn’t have the LED lights, they could claim the bike obscured my vehicle’s brake lights and be found at fault. Moreover, if your bike rack extends >1m (3ft) beyond the rear of the vehicle, typically by law you are required to run flagging tape or a flashing red light. From personal experience, I’ve NEVER seen anyone do this but again, in event of an accident, someone can claim they were not able to appropriately judge braking distance and I would be found at fault. As someone who owns a dash cam to protect myself from being the victim of litigation, the LED lights are a HUGE deal for me. Moreover, they’re just good common sense for everyone. Litigation aside, I don’t want to be on a road trip and have my bike crushed. I do agree, the Kashima might be overkill but I’m not going to say ‘no’ to it.
@iblackfeathers8 ай бұрын
there are deal breakers which does not make it the best bike rack. i love kuat's design style for all their racks, but they simply do not have a 100lb weight capacity per tray to support a 90lb fat tire e-bike. and that is after removing the battery. there are other manufacturers who support that weight, making them more versatile for more kinds of bikes. but thanks for the review because without reviews we all cannot make informed choices.

Hey Mark, first and foremost - thank you for taking the time to comment. This channel is still not monetized (I need 1,000 subscribers) so your kind words honestly mean a lot. With that said, I actually feel uniquely qualified to answer this. In the interest of getting as much testing in as short of a period as possible, the rack has been and is currently mounted to my truck. Granted it’s been a mild Alberta winter, we’ve had our fair share of cold days like you experience. I’ve power washed it off a few times but everything has worked despite all the road grime. There has been absolutely no sticking or binding anywhere, so I can say with 100% confidence I believe it will perform excellently for you in Manitoba. The only issue I’ve experienced beyond the design flaws mentioned in this video is the actual wiring extension. However, I have full confidence KUAT will provide support when the time comes for a replacement cable. Out of curiosity, where do you ride in Manitoba? Does Lake of the Woods have any trails?

That rack would a problem in parts, if not all of Australia as the bikes would obscure the registration plate and obscure the registration plate when the rack is folded up. This attract a $448 fine in NSW and loss of 3 points. If you contest the find and lose in court then the fine is $2,200. Happy days. Oh and the registration must be visible form 20m away and readable at 45Deg and at 20m from either side of the car. The plate lights must illuminate registration/number plates with white light, so the numbers can be read at night 20 metres from the vehicle’s rear.
@GREYWOLFbike Жыл бұрын
Oh wow! So what do people do for bike racks in Aus? Roof-mount? Here in Canada I’ve never heard of anyone having a problem with the Police re: license plate obstruction by a bicycle rack. I suspect our laws are not nearly as specific as yours. That said, perhaps this is an opportunity for KUAT to sell a license plate relocation accessory since the Piston Pro X has power and could accommodate a white light to illuminate the license plate.

Kuat now makes a license plate holder for the rack. It fits into the holder for the wrench at the end of the main beam. A bit of a PIA to mount and reinstall your rear plate though unless you can get a 3rd plate for regions that require a front plate.

I just got one of these and am very disappointed how wobbly front to back my bike is on it. It flops about 12" each way and if there are two bike they clank against each other. I have watched many reviews but have not seen a reviewer show how much of this movement can occur. My bike is a Norco Sight ebike with 29" wheels. It is well withing the stated parameters of the rack. The chocks are just barely large enough to grip the tires. For my purposes of carrying two of this style bike this rack it is totally unusable without significant modification to stiffen up the bikes on the rack. The problem is far less significant on bikes with smaller wheels and shorter wheelbases, but if you have an emtb with 29" wheels I would suggest a different rack. I have contacted KUAT to ask if there is something I am doing incorrectly but they haven't responded with a solution yet. Most likely I will have to return it and seek a rack that holds the bikes more firmly in place .

Hi Lawrence, I honestly appreciate you sharing your experience and feedback. My motivation behind these videos are to show a ‘real life’ application of these products. Unfortunately I have no yet transported two mountain bikes at the same time on this rack, so I wasn’t able to say one way or the other if there was going to be any issue. I also have 27.5” wheels on my MTB so perhaps that creates a more stable situation than your 29” wheels plus the added weight of the e-bike. I’m already planning to do a ‘long term review’ video as I’m also experiencing issues with the brake lights, so I’ll be sure to look for opportunities to carry multiple bikes and report back on stability concerns.
