A while back, in my Bleach Battle Analysis of Gerard Valkyrie's fight, I speculated that the Quincy cross in his centre was his weak point, and could be destroyed to kill him. I'm pretty sure this means that the anime will let the Gotei 13 actually kill Gerald or at least hint that it would have been possible. I'm sure Kubo have gotten this question many times before. The reason he decided to answer it now is probably because he is actually working on/thinking about that part of story again and made the decision that destroying the cross would have destroyed Gerald. Stuff like this just gets me more excited for the adaptation. It's clear they are working hard to fix the things that were never explained.

Im pretty sure that if it gets changed to the captians defeating Gerad, it will only be a minor change leading to the three captains fighting him will defeat him all together. But if we dream, we can always hope for someone who doesnt has as much attention as Kenpachi, Byakuya and Toshiro. And if we think again, these captains werent really alone. I think giving the final blow to one person who didnt do anything for weakening him wouldnt feel right. On the other hand Grimjow really didnt do anything but deal the final blow aswell and it didnt feel cheap. So what am I acctaully thinking of? Well there is a convinient strong and interesting group that somehow always gets the punchingback position. What if the Vizard would destroy Gerads Cross all together. My first thought would have been giving someone like Love a Bankai that comes in deus ex machina. Then i thought why not include all the not gotei Vizard. But my final thought is acctually including all Vizard with their Masks. We got Hitsugaya back and Rose's and Kensei's comeback was teased. Together they also should be strong enough or even it would prove to the fanbase that they are indeed not weak. So what are the pros here 1. Vizard screentime 2. Vizard acctaully succeeding in battle 3. Vizard Mask are used (not using full power against such an enemy was always weird) 4. Vizard being as strong as teased before fake Karakuratown Arc 5. Vizard-teameffort lets it look hard but also shows of their bond 6. Vizard maybe need to show new Bankai or shikai powers and those are always fun 7. Vizard showing of might take some of the weak feeling of the Gotei 13 at the end of the series. As you claimed often yourself the Vizard are weirdly weak for what toexpect from them, they dont use all their power, get no screentime and if they get some they are getting wreckend. This showcase would help them massivly. So after finishing my comment I acctually feel that giving this to the Vizard would be exactly the right thing to do, even tho I thin realistic enough to realise that its not more than a dream

You know, it’s a shame Komamura only lasted long enough to take down Bambietta. I think him showing up in human form and sacrificing himself in a clash of titans against Gerard in order to give the others the chance to destroy the cross would’ve been really cool.

The fact that Kubo dropped this answer before Cour 3 is very encouraging. That, and I like that this answer links the Miracle more to the Superstar. Additionally, I hope this means we get some Gerard backstory, and some Hōgyoku answers as well. Additionally, I prefer the idea that Gerard was some sort of homunculus/golem with no human self who was sort of a Golem of Prague figure for the Quincy in hiding, both in the Human World and in the Wandenreich.

I always somewhat speculated that S-the Superstar was Ywhach’s attempt at replicating the Miracle. I also suspect W-the Wind might be an attempt at replicating Pernida’s compulsory.

This would also tie back to the Jewish aspect of the Quincy story as Golems where in Jewish faith to be a being born from the pain and suffering of the Jews and was seen as a “miracle savior “ to protect them from suffering and the Nazi’s oppression. This would also strengthen the theory i have that this entire story is an allegory for WW1&2

Ichibei wouldn't be able to hit Lille because you can't cast a shadow across a light source, and Lille wouldn't be able to hit Ichibei. Although, Ichibei could probably seal Lille if he thought it was necessary. He probably would just toy with him until he gave up though, since Lille isn't a threat to the Soul King.

Glad it was clarified. I absolutely hated how OP the final Quincy were. Lille being a "God" and therefore only able to be killed by a weapon designed to kill "Gods" (that the enemy facing him just so happened to have) was probably the worst of them all.

I think what Kubo might‘ve implied is that no one is really capable of destroying the cross (except maybe Yhwach) but IF someone destroyed it Gerard would’ve been defeated. Kubu never implied it can even be destroyed, he merely said if you CAN destroy it, it would kill Gerard. The cross itself is likely intangible, which is why it never appeared again. It was likely physically destroyed with Hits and Byakuyas Bankai but just like Aizens jewel, can't be destroyed by mere physical attacks.

There’s a manga series called Yu Yu Hakusho which started the supernatural genre in Shonen Jump including Bleach and in Yu Yu Hakusho there’s a character called Elder Toguro who has the power to manipulate his body but can still die if his crucial organs are attacked but he can freely change the location of them to avoid this so maybe Gerald does the same thing with his cross always moving it to avoid its destruction

Could be a compromise: the captains see the cross, surmise that's the weakness and wrangle Bankai Zaraki into targeting it at full power, slamming into it and sending it careening into the ground... only for the light to follow it and reform Gerard anyway - who cheerfully tells them that yes, they got it right, that would work, they're just not strong enough to actually do it. Then follow up with the Auswahlen providing the ironic miracle.

He is partually frozen, and then, after Byakuya blows up the head and he loses his strength to resist the freezing power, the now fully frozen body collapses into giant pieces. Gremmy was neither dumb or inexperienced. That's misinformation that has been in the Bleach fandom for years with no evidence to support it. In fact Gremmy has plenty of fighting experience. This is proven in ch.574 pg.8, where Gremmy tells Zaraki"people like you are unable to understand my power until they lose". How would Gremmy know that Zaraki is like those people unless he'd already fought and defeated the people Zaraki is supposed to be like?🤷🏽‍♂️

My theory, and I suppose Kubo's answer supports it somewhat is that the cross is hard to destroy, not only because it's resistant (which would lead to only Kenpachi "there's nothing my blade can't cut" Zaraki being able to), but also because it's tiny in comparison to Gerard's body. It'd be like finding a needle in a haystack. I'd imagine that's where the difficulty comes from, and this would also explain why the cross wasn't drawn on every single panel. It is tiny.

It would be interesting to see how Aizen will interact with Soul King parts. As far as the manga is concerned, Yhwach could have absorbed Aizen along with the Hogyoku, since Hogyoku is essentially smaller Soul King fragments put together. I wonder if Mimihagi, Gerard and Pernida could do the same.

Considering the power of the X-Axis is just spatially erasing whatever Lille's target is, I'd say he could destroy the cross, especially with rapidfire attacks like he did with Vollstandig. Indeed, I'd like to give my theory on what the X-Axis actually is: I think it's Spatial Manipulation. Think about it, Lille doesn't just have the ability to instantly put holes in whatever his target is as well as anything between him and it, he can also phase through attacks, teleport, hold Shunsui in place with some sort of telekinesis, and fly, presumably without creating any Reishi footholds since he...doesn't have feet. He could possibly hold Gerard in place and pepper him with holes until the Cross resembles Swiss Cheese, and win like that, adding onto that the fact that Lille, like Gerard, is immortal, but unlike Gerard doesn't seem to have a weakness to his immortality that could negate it.

I think a cool aspect would be to introduce Tsukishima during that fight. For one, we have had very little of Fullbringers in that arc but secondly - If he can alter memories of everyone and everything, then perhaps he would be able to alter the cross or Gerard himself, thus helping in killing him.

Another possible ending: even if Zaraki can't destroy the cross, perhaps he cuts Gerard in half again, and Hitsugaya (and/or Rukia/Tessai/Hachi?) accepts being pinned to the location keeping the cross frozen/in stasis until Ichigo/Ichibe/Oetsu are able to return to destroy it for good. Alternatively, Ichibe might even snatch it and imprison it as the new Soul King.

When I was reading this as it came out I always thought that the way they would beat him was that Kenpachi, Toshiro, and Byakuya (even any of the other survivors in the royal palace could have jumped in) would have to team up and perfectly match him so it would be an even match and there would be no need for a miracle to happen since he could reasonably win as much as they could ending the battle in an awesome final clash but that definitely didn’t happen

I think some basic changes could have gone a long way towards making Gerard's power feel more reasonable and grounded. The quincies have this recurring concept of absorbing/manipulating reishi, so having Gerard be the ultimate form of that would have been really cool. Like, every time he regenerates, the heart could have been shown to destroy the environment around it and transforming the particles into Gerard's new body. I like it thematically as well, with how his power is almost like a human muscle, straining and damaging itself through exercise only to rebuild itself stronger with protein. And a heart is, of course, nothing if not a big muscle.

I liked it better when the elite sterns were just unkillable gods, unbeatable by conventional means. That’s why I liked that no shinigami was able to fight 1v1 against them, they all needed help. Eventually this culminated in fighting Yhwach who is ultra Uber unkillable.

Honestly in terms of abilities, I think Lillie ultimately got more power than Gerard did. Lillie was the first Sternritter who received power fro Yhwach, and was not a portion of the Soul King. Meanwhile Gerard is the "heart" of the Soul King, and as Askin Nak LeVarr said about both Pernida and Gerard, Yhwach gave them their Shrift not as to give them power, but to acknowledge the powers that they already had In a fight between Lillie and Gerard...it really isn't easy to think of who would win since they both have immensely broken powers, but one thing is for sure, they've definitely earned their elite status I'll be honest, I'm still on the opinion that Gerard should remain being undefeated by his Shinigami opponents. HOWEVER, I think it would be nice if Byakuya, Toshiro, and Zaraki realize what Gerard's weakness was and tried attacking the cross, only for Yhwach's Auswahlen to kill Gerard for them

Lille was split into countless pieces and lost his intangibility when his halo was shattered. It's very likely he was weakened to the point of each piece being a high level seated officer and would need to recombine all those pieces to reform. If so, then Kira and the others (Komamura and Iba for instance) should have been able to cut them down one by one and finish him off.

In bleach you can say that at times there is an attempt to make a "hard magic system" but there really is a "soft magic system" which means that we know little about how exactly the "magic" is actually done and where do the limits and technicalities of each ability are, so when you first watch Gerard get cut in half there is that obvious cross in the center that seems to act as the core from which he regenerates and makes you think that destroying it would stop him from reviving but we don't really have any confirmation that that is the case, it may just be there cause it looks cool, other way of defeating gerard may be completely draining his reiatsu so he doesn't have any more energy to regenerate with yumichika or hisagi's shikai/banki but yet again we have this soft magic system that doesn't really make clear if that would work, he could just say ohhh I don't have any more energy certainty it would take a "miracle" for me to regenerate now and then he just does and it's just a completely broken ability with no workarounds beside the author says he dies. Other way is that is very obvious that damaging him makes him stronger soo just don't do that and try to paralyze him with mayuri's drugs or some kido seals like the one kisuke uses against aizen but yet again he may just bullshit that away with it would take a miracle for this to not affect me, so unless kubo actually defines more clearly who the miracle works and most importantly how it doesn't there is just no way to say.

The cross being a focal point like James and Mask Coexistence is honestly a great detail that probably doesn’t have to main focus of the fight. I personally loved Gerard’s defeat being a miracle itself as this unlikable being godly proportions being defeated by his own God, felt life Devine retribution and a miracle for the soul reapers themselves.

So I wasn't the only one which theorized of that Quincy cross inside his body as his core and weak point. I really hope the anime may confirm this and change the end of the fight in this direction. In the end, the problem is that all those that fought Gerard were physically warriors and they attacked without a real plan. I hope also that the fullbringers will be included here if so, Tsukishima may learn of his weakness, Giriko help to support the trio in order to tear apart Gerard again, and have Ginjo deal the final blow would just be crazy.

I feel like Kubo dropping it now is definitely interesting, considering we probably won't see anything of Gerard until Cour 3. Which I guess could be just that they started the work on C3, leaving only post production details for C2 (as it is supposed to premiere not that long from now). But at the same time it would be nice to see some bigger implications being made around Komamura, as both of the characters have a lot of similarities - at least when it comes to their power. Specifically one sacrificing his own heart to create a miraculous undead bankai spirit, and other being said to be Soul King's heart and a miraculous undead titan.

For me Lille baro is strongest - sword - kido - hax Plus x-axis who touch opponent 100%, with light-speed attack. He only loss because Deus ex machina. I'm curious how people feel about Gerard's place in a powerscaling/ranking hierarchy now with this weakness reveal. Before I feel like most people considered him to be a top 10 character if not a top 5 seeing as it seemed that even three of the strongest captains and an army of back up couldn't put Gerard down for good. Knowing that there is a weakness lying at the root of everything certainly makes him feel a bit less all powerful, though I don't think it takes away from the impressive things he is/was capable of. It's just that whether someone could actually kill him or not isn't a matter of being more absurdly broken then him like Aizen or Yhwach anymore, and having it come down to if they can figure out how to destroy his core before letting him grow out of control with no way to deal with him.

If Zaraki, who is one of the physically strongest Bleach characters, and one of Bleach characters with greatest Reiatsu who can cut through everything was not enough to kill Gerard/destroy cross, and we add prime Byakuya, and adult Toshiro, it still shows how strong Gerard really is.

You are forgetting that Lille pierces through ANYTHING. There is absolutely no protection against his attacks, except for Nanao’s zanpakuto. Lille can easily kill Gerard with two large shots: the first one kills him and the second one annihilates his quincy cross.

@Vlad Gaming Not really. Kenpachi was seen struggling to cut through gremmy's skin once gremmy got use to it. Kenpachi also had trouble cutting through gerard's shied and his sword. If Kenpachi really could cut through anything then we would have seen it. Oetsu's sword is an example of actually being able to cut through anything

I think that, assuming the fight gets revised it will go something like this. After Toshiro and Byakuya get their turn blasting Gerard to pieces and he starts resurrecting again, those two recall the cross that Zaraki revealed using his Bankai as they saw it appear now again. This leads the Gotei to figure out that the cross is what keeps resurrecting Gerard all the time. The issue now is that Gerard is even more durable so it just got much harder to expose the weakness again so they have to formulate a plan of attack to make sure they get it this time and Gerard doesn't get yet another power boost. I would personally have the Visoreds come into play here with them all shooting their Ceros together at Gerard being what kills him again and allows for the cross to finally be destroyed.

I had the same thought about Gerard's cross when I first saw the effect in the comic, the way it seamed to pull the body together it what hinted it too me, its nice to have it confirmed. I suspect that the reason for the Gerard's cross not being brought up again, was that Karbo was under a crunch at that time, I too hope its changed in the Anime. As for the Hōgyoku, its a Philosopher Stone, it might not have been what Kubo was thinking about, but that is more or less what it is. But is it completely indestructible... perhaps... or not... Orihime thought at one point that she might be able to destroy it.

Because that link between Gerard's Miracle and Aizen's transformations is kinda obvious but the way Aizen originally explained the Hogyoku to me just rings all bells about being closer to the Almighty. Granting people's desires but ONLY if the outcome was possible very much mirrors how Yhwach explains all futures as grains of sand and him seeing them and jumping from one of them to the next. (Or evrn altering them)

The elite that fought the Royal Guard were much weaker. The Gerard that Zaraki fought was powered up by Yhwach’s Auswahlen and changing the reimyaku (reishi atmosphere) into one that favoured quincies. Considering in the 13th Blade databook Zaraki calls Nimaya a coward, and challeges him into taking back the zanpakutou he stole, I doubt he could do anything to this version of Gerard.
