Thank you SO MUCH for covering Romanian animation in such detail. I'm Romanian and I love animation. I even wanted to be an animator myself at some point. It's a huge shame that most of this history is forgotten. Most Romanians have no idea about this stuff beyond Ion Popescu Gopo and the Mihaela series. (By the way, if you live in Bucharest, there's an annual film festival called "Animest". It's at the beginning of October and it's really cool because it focuses on indie animation. For example, the first time I saw the Marona movie was in this festival. They always have unusual movies that don't fit the mainstream)

Really enjoyed this. Mihail Badica's evocative short 'Icar', which I first saw as a lad as part of the 1977 Fantastic Animation Festival that toured U.S. cinemas that year, is one of my favorite films, while Popescu-Gopo's "litte man" is as iconic a character as any in animation. I am only sorry that no mention was made of ethnically Hungarian but Romanian-born and reared Zoltán Szilágyi Varga, who has since emigrated to Hungary but got his start in Romania with such provocative shorts as 'The Gordian Knot' and 'Arena'. I would be interested, given your attention on Eastern European cinemas, to see an episode devoted to Albanian animation, that small country getting a late start in that field and often overlooked in histories of the art, but which has produced some distinctive work deserving wider attention.

Buddy of mine brought me to an old cinema in Bucharest where we watched a bunch of old animation films created during the communist era by a studio called Animafilm, those were some of the trippiest animations I've seen and they didn't have access to fun substances back then. After the screenings some of the old directors gave interviews on stage mentioning censorship and the anti regime messages behind the animations.

Love these videos about the animation tradtions of various countries. Obviously there is still much to cover in terms of east and west of the Iron Curtain etc. But I'd wager it could be expanded to cover more or less every country on the face of Earth. Just think of the differences between 20th century Chinese and Japanese animation, or, for that matter, between British and American/Hollywood or Franco-Belge (for lack of a better term) animation in the same period.

Thanks for the video! I am so glad when people talk about aspects of Romanian culture. The guide was excelent, though I must say that you forgot an old web series, namely "Luzării de pe Electrolizei" (The Loosers from Electrolizei Street). The series follows the life of four characters, Fratica (from Romanian word for brother 'frate') - which represents the average Romanian who lived in the communist period with his language and behaviour , Gusteru' (the name being from a species of lizards) -which represents the 'newer guard' (the Romanian borned in the '90s) with his modern clothing and tricks-, Unguru' (the Hungarian),which represents the friendly relationship between Romanians and Hungarians (due to our history there are still some tensions left to this day) being also a constant alcoholic, and finaly Copilu' (the Kid) which represents the third generation of Romanians (post '90s), very clever and with many tricks up his sleeves. Here you can find the original episodes (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXWTi6t-j9eCkJo) which were animated. Their adventures are humourous and make fun of old pop-culture and social situation in Romania. After that period of animation the studio (which was formed by just two guys) went on to further write scripts for this show but this time only for radio stations (and KZbin audio-only clips) and a new name: Unguru Bulan ('bulan' here meaning 'good luck'). The playlist can be seen here:kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYbUdJathNmsadk. In contrast with the 'RObotzi' series that you mentioned, the guys kept producing episodes for this to this day back to animted form (though with an inferior quality in my opinion). I hope that feedback helps and thanks again for the guide!

To this day I do not know if a sci-fi cartoon I saw as a kid in the early 90s was made in Romania or other country. All I remember about it is that: - There were 4 main characters: a boy astronaut in blue, a girl astronaut in red with a ribbon on her head, a yellow robot named Plux who had gem-shaped red eyes and blue spiraled ears and his chest had gray drawers, and the 4th member was a fat dog in an astronaut costume, and had a big black nose, I think his name was Pluto. - There was one episode where they landed on a planet with some kind of octopus-amoeba aliens and they captured the crew and threw them into a room, sentecing them to the "Laughing torture", where they were tickled by robotic hands that came out of the walls.

9:54 - Wooooah, wait a moment! You just sent me down a very particular rabbit hole. Antonescu's character designs for "Robinson Crusoe" look unsettlingly similar to those in "Three from Prostokvashino", which Vladimir Popov directed later that same decade. Specifically, the cat, dog, and Robinson himself look like early sketches of Matroskin, Sharik, and Fyodor's Dad. I have never heard of any connection between Popov's team and Antonescu, but there's clearly some sort of a thread there, made all the more curious by the fact the 1973 film was not released publicly. What in the world?..

Yugoslavia also had a particularly strong output during that era, and for similar reasons, the government being rather liberal and permissive compared to many of the other countries of the Eastern bloc (Yugoslavia of course being free of Soviet domination) and short animation being promoted by the state, with the filmmakers given a good degree of autonomy.
