After a 6-hour bus ride from Sibu, I finally arrived in Kuching, ready for a rest. But instead, curiosity led me out of my hostel - which, by the way, is one of the strangest I’ve ever stayed in - and I began exploring the stunning waterfront. Kuching really surprised me with how modern it is compared to other cities in Malaysian Borneo! The £4 a night hostel I’m staying in is located right in the mix of 4-5 star hotels like the Hilton and Sheraton, so the contrast is fascinating.
While wandering the vibrant waterfront, I share how I’m funding my year-long adventure from Borneo to England and some budget travel tips that have kept me going. I also give a mini-tour of the quirky hostel I’m staying in and its unique features!

I only went there once, for breakfast. I should have went back as the food was delicious and the staff well amazing :) It’s not often I mention a restaurant or cafe in my videos but they deserved it :)

Points from too many years on the road. It's actually not as nice as it should be. Shoddy craftmanship in the build.

Hope you're doing well Stuart! My wife and I (we met you Dalat) are travelling to Malaysia on Thursday! We're spending 2 nights in KL, 1 night in Port Dickson, 2 nights in Melacca, 1 night in Maur, and 2 nights in Singapore.

Hi Russell, of course I remember you and your wife. I’m hoping to be in Malaysian mainland in about a month, so hopefully you can give me tips of where to go before I get there :) Hope you have a good time.

@@olderbackpacker I don't live here yet. But I will very soon. If you want a longer term visa for MY, perhaps the digital nomad one could work. Be safe out there. I just started watching the ferry video. I had looked into that but the website was so horrible... And then I saw reviews. I just saw that Air Aisa has a cheap ASEAN flight pass. I could not figure the rules out. Maybe it could work for you.

Good luck with the move. My backpacking adventure is to get from Borneo to England without flying :) I could cheat, but I would definitely get caught ha ha

We have a similar story i retired end of May now settled in Cebu (Cebu Philippines not Borneo) you can easily retire in a country such as Philippines on a pension like we have but we have a long wait until 67 for the state pension to kick which I guess will be around the same time as we need a little more for health! My father was is the region in the 50’s (Royal Navy) so I’m tracing his route and visiting the sites he was at (HK Singapore Korea Japan and even Subic bay Philippines HMS Kenya) stay safe

I would love to settle down somewhere with my pension, unfortunately I get itchy feet after a week lol. I’ll carry on backpacking until I’m too weak and old, which might be when the state pension kicks in ha ha
