Electric scooters! The M365 has literally changed the world. This is the Kugoo S1 - a model that was designed 2 years ago, and now tries to be resurrected with fresher production.
So far I’ve had mixed feelings about it - some of the things about it are good, some of the things about it are not that good.
Let’s check the speed - 30km’h is claimed which is about 18 miles per hour. I weigh 90 kilos, - around 200 pounds, and the scooter should support up to 260 pounds, meaning that with my boy weight it should be able to reach the maximum speed.
Next is the motor power. Not sure if it is exactly 350W, but it is really slightly better than the Mijia scooter.
Wheel size is the same. The wheel itself is the same, but the tyre - it is much smaller on the Kugoo S1, they call it non-pneumatic, non-slip tire.
Braking distance - claims to be the same on both scooters.Motor brake + disc brake vs motor brake and emergency brake on the Kugoo s1. And having a thumb-controller brake is so unnatural it may easily cost you an accident if you don’ get used quickly.
Let's check some of the disadvantages. We start with the build quality. The construction feels a bit thinner and when we put the scooters side by side - you can see that the Kugoo model looks slimmer, overall not as robust.
It has automatically configured cruise control which triggers after 3-4 seconds of maintaining the speed - funny enough I couldn’t see that in the specs, but it is there and it is good.
It has front break that works based on motor resistance - and while it is not very effective in lower speeds, it breaks pretty well when you are running quickly.
What is worse than the M365 - there is no smartphone app. The riding experience is much worse because of the hard tyres. Maybe in the summer, with higher temperatures the material will be a little more elastic, but at temperatures around 10 degrees - not fun. If the surface is not flat enough it feels often unpleasant.
Also - spare parts and accessories - both models are relatively easy to repair, and Kugoo’s spare parts are less expensive. But the variety you will find about the m365 … You wouldn’t believe HOW many of them are available.
If you are planning it as a first scooter - Kugoo S1 could be alright. If you are wondering whether it feels like an upgrade from the m365 - it doesn’t.
No matter what kind of scooter you choose, remember two things - ride safely and responsibly.

I put some electric isolation tape on the handlebars to fix the wobble, and also used some foam tape on the battery to make it stop rattling. So far done about 15km on it and I´m happy. Sadly has no waterproofing and the warranty does not cover water damage even though it said IP54 in the description, this leaves it usable only in dry weather. By the way I found a way to fold it by kneeling on one knee on the deck next to the rear brake and then just pushing the handlebars to the front with one hand, while pushing the folding lever down with the other. Very quick and easy, even simpler than the original tutorial. Chose Kugoo over Mi because it is more compact folded and there was a deal of 290€ for kugoo when Mi costs about 400€

Folding this is tricky. You need to push the handle forward and at the same time use the small lever with your shoe like you did. It's best to do that next to a wall - your front wheel should be blocked by the wall, push handle forward and press the lever. It's much easier in my model, but it indeed is hard :). Also the rear wheel can be replaced to inflated one. I was really struggling which one to buy- Kugoo or Xiaomi, in the end I bought Kugoo because: 1. Speed and range is very similar in both 2. Weight is better in Kugoo 3. Kugoo has display (not that important, but I prefer that than the app) 4. Once you get the hang of folding, it's much more compact than Xiaomi, better for transportation in bus/train 5. It has front and rear suspension 6. Rear wheel can be replaced to inflated (comfort gets almost as good or even better than on Xiaomi) 7. It is cheaper than Xiaomi, even with additional rear wheel which costs 20-40$ Some work needs to be done for this scooter to improve the comfort right after buying, because the build quality is lacking: 1. Rear suspension needs to be loosen up and oiled, because it almost doesn't work from factory 2. Front suspension needs to be disassembled and oiled, because it almost doesn't work from factory 3. Battery cover and LED display needs to be sealed with black silicone - because it has 0 waterproofness from factory 4. Some sponge needs to be put with the battery pack, because it can rattle if you won't do that 5. It's best to buy some teflon tape, or something similar and use it on handlebars folding mechanism to make the vibrations lower, there is like 1mm of loose space between handles and the slots they go into. After you do that, and you buy the inflated wheel, Kugoo > Xiaomi. From factory they are both similar, with an advantage of Xiaomi. Very hard choice which to buy, but if you like tinkering - Kugoo should be perfect :).

Thanks Pivoo, awesome comment and very useful information - feels like the ultimate tutorial to unleash the good qualities of the Kugoo S1. Looks like spending some time on modifications pays well off. I have recently found a video published by GeekBuying about how to properly fold it - and makes good sense - if having no issues with the mechanism in long term is the main purpose - it is something we can live with. HAve you tried any particular tire model? I'd love to post a link. And this comment deserves to be pinned - again - thank you for taking the time and share all that!

@@TechMishka Hello, I bought my wheel in Poland, I didn't find anything similar elswhere, but on Aliexpress there are couple of other wheel models available, for example: www.aliexpress.com/item/8-Inch-Inflated-Wheel-For-E-twow-S2-Scooter-M6-Pneumatic-Wheel-With-Inner-Tube-8/32832263891.html?spm=a2g0v.10010108.1000001.7.4c6e4906uUuYV0&traffic_analysisId=recommend_3035_null_null_null&scm=1007.13338.80878.000000000000000&pvid=7fd0d8fa-c7a5-446e-b61f-9d7159ee0b8b&tpp=1 Size of axel for Kugoo is M6, because this scooter has basically the same design as E-Twow scooter (but is 2 times cheaper). I've read some positive feedback about this tire, so it should be good. Here is a video of installation of this wheel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5-3eHWYn9B4ptU There might be some other Aliexpress sellers with lower prices, but I didn't look it up :).

I had to remove the small rounded plastic stuff on the front which keeps the handle for overturning, to be able to open it totaly... Than I had the same issue with the folding. I realized that when I step on the rear brake and push the lever in the meantime while pressing the handle a bit forward, than it can be folded quite easy. - I just felt like I'm an acrobat or something like that while doing this.

Just looking at a folding mechanism I can tell that when you just put weight on it it also acts as a resisting force to getting the pin to move. You should hold the bottom part of the scooter and pull it up while pushing the knob down squeezing the 2 parts together. You do that by not applying any force on the front wheel, lift it off the ground and it will be easy to unlock.

As most things in life - it is perhaps a matter of getting used to, but I also agree that having an actual disk brake like in the m365 feels safer. To share a funny story - Tony's first ever scooter encounter was with the Kugoo S1. After that he was riding the m365 for a while; and instead of using the brake, he hit the bell, as he has already developed the habit of using the brake on the Kugoo 😎

m365 owner here. The motor on the xiaomi is actually a 500w limited to a 250w. You can make your own firmware which makes the scooter a snappier ride. With the amount of people who own the scooter, there are a lot of resources for repair-- if you buy a scooter thats not a xiaomi or a segway, you might end up getting a lemon.

Thanks Krige, good points. If responding here counts - the folded size of the Kugoo is a bit smaller, and the fact that you can also fold the handlebars makes it quite nice for cars with limited space. The front spring is ... almost inactive out of the box. Some lubrication improves a little, however nothing too great. The Mijia scooter with solid honeycomb tire is a little nicer to ride than the Kugoo with lubricated spring and the original tire.

Good choice! A few things to look out for from my personal experience (> 1 year of driving, 1300 km in total, spent < $10 in maintenance) - ensure that the handlebar screw near the hook is always tight. After a half year of driving, the adjustable mechanism for handle bar can wear out - there's a spring based button, which holds the handle bar in place - you will loose it at some point, but it can be easily fixed by carefully (you need to watch out for not damaging the internal cable that goes through the pipe) drilling a hole and putting an ordinary screw in place. And last thing - do not drive it completely empty. Always charge it when the voltage drops down to 32-33v in the idle mode, otherwise, if you drive it completely empty (for me it was around 29-30v, when the scooter turned off), you can damage the battery.

I can tell you how you have to fold it. You have to first apply force on the lever while your foot is also kind of putting force on the deck (so the scooter doesn't lift up) and at the same time push the handle bar. This action happens all at once so basically 2 pushes of force instantly. I also was struggling with closing this like my feet started to hurt at some point until I tried something more different (like I said before) and it is probably t he quickest folding ever, I can do a full fold in like 3 seconds

I'm trying to get into the electric scooter and thus far returned a Hover-1 Alpha and TurboAnt V8 Dual-Battery scooter. I need to stay under the $1k and the $600-$800 range is more ideal. I've been doing research on these for a while but all I see are specs. After buying two of them, I see they don't live up to the specs they boast so that's a problem. My biggest thing is speed and overall battery life. I'll never take this thing on super long rides, few miles max but I want a high top end speed. The TurboAnt V8 says 20mph but that's more like 16-17mph, and that's on a good day. The Hover-1 Alpha did actually manage to hit 17-18mph but that's still so much slower than I was hoping for. I started looking into faster scooters under $1k and came across Kugoo. I had to contact them directly to get their speeds because their policy is to not post them on their website I guess? I'm guessing that's because they say it's a top speed of 28mph but it actually does like 23-24mph. If anyone can recommend a scooter that fits the following requirements, please let me know. Under $1k. top speed over 30mph ideally. Max weight at least 260lbs (that eliminates a lot). A battery that won't go to shit in a year (or if it's a replaceable battery, that works too).

Push forward on the steering column to release the PRESSURE ON THE folding mechanism, as you try to release the spring lock mechanism that holds it in place: it looks like you are simply BINDING it when you press down: that is, when you put your WEIGHT on it, you are pushing down on the WHOLE SCOOTER, which FORCES the locking mechanism TO BIND. My REAL problems with the m365 were: 1 - Can't lock it properly. A big hole in the frame, or something? You have to spend 5 minutes making a weird knot every time you lock your scooter. 2 - The "alarm?" feature is just idiotic - You can turn on an alarm BUT ONLY FOR 3 HOURS - I don't care about their excuses - this is simply wrong. 3 - Tires (inner tubes) pop all the time. You can expect to pop a tire every 300-600 kms, which is less than what I would travel in a month. I have a 20 year old bicycle - I had to change tires like 3 times. I had to change 3 tires on my scooter in the first 3 months. 4 - It's way to hard to switch a tire - Especially the first time. Where you can switch a bike tire in like 10-15 minutes, this one takes hours, and it's screwed so stiff, that you will need to be a bodybuder or something, in order to take it apart. 5 - The "vibrating handle" - after the first 100 km you have you have to glue some some stuff to your scooter, to make sure it's not shaking like crazy. 6 - The less power the battery has, the slower the device is. Yes, this is how a battery is supposed to work, but the fact, that you are not able to hit 15 km/h with 25% battery left is just stupid. 7 - "Regenerative braking" is a joke on this device. You end up loosing more energy, due to the fact, that it kills your momentum in the most inconvenient of instances, and you have to accelerate again, which usually end up consuming 10 times more energy, that the one you "regained". And it happened like 20 times - You slow down, because there is a red light, you are down to 1-2 km/h, but now the light turns green, you decide to kick off (because it's much faster to accelerate that way), but the damn regenerative braking is still on). 8 - Wet roads really kills your range - I am not talking about riding trough ponds. I am talking about 2 minutes of rain, and all of a sudden, my range of 25 km drops to 17. I've even fell down to 13 km, when there was wind. Now - this doesn't mean, that It was a fun and nice to ride. I really enjoyed it, while it was working. But there are just so many "small things" that piled up, so I can't recommended this to anyone who is planning to use it in his or hers daily commute ... not yet. Wanna use it as a joyride on weekends - sure, it's awesome! Touring to another town - it's honestly the best way to move between tourist sides. I didn't want to think, how will this thing perform in the winter, so I decided to stick to my bicycle. Maybe will be interested in the next iteration/generation, if they improve on the problems I mentioned so far ...

sorry but did not experienced all the things you said with my m365, i had one popped tire after 2000km but thats because i did not change the outer tyre and the outer tyre were really worn out. Changing the tire took me only 30.sec search for the trick in reddit. For 1 i have masterlock in handcuff design. For 6. Either your battery is damaged or you weigh too heavy which is unlikely. Even when the battery is at 33volts when the power level is 25% the scooter should drive 25km/h but with weaker acceleration due to the BMS limits the power when the battery level is below 50% and below 30% more stronger. its just that you cant reach the top speed very fast. My xiaomi m365 reaches 22km/h when the power level is at 5-10%. At 7 you are right but there is already a solution thats called CFW. You can disable the regenerative braking and is only active when you brake actively. Even for 2. you mentioned about alarm for 3 hours, there is a solution. using cfw the scooter is permanently locked and the alarm is activated until you disable it. About 5. I honestly did not glued something or buyed spare parts . The only thing I changed after 2000km+ is that i installed the new x-tech zoom hb brakes

Its very hard to find informations and videos about the Kugoo S1, but its easy to find russian videos about the Kugoo S2 and Kugoo S3 that unfortunately, I do not understand. Its seems that the Kugoo S1 an old and outdated electric scooter that they want to sell again in Europe. Geekbuying S1 is not in anyway comperable to Russian S1 S2 or S3. It is a mix of S2 and S3. There are lots of differences: 1. Geekbuying S1 has a rear break light, Russian S1 or S2 didn't have it, but S3 has it. 2. Geekbuying S1 has the same front shock absorber as Russian S3 (for S1 or S2 Russians had to buy special octagon sleeves to make it work) 3. Geekbuying S1 Motor wheel and battery is the same as in Russian S2. Russian S3 has more power and mileage. 4. Battery in Geekbuying S1 fits tightly in the deck, like in Russian S3 - in old Russian S1 and S2 it rattled (jumped) inside the deck and broke because of that. Anyway, I still disassembled the deck, took the battery out it and put some kitchen sponge cut into 1cm pieces just to be sure that it really fits tightly. 5. Russian S1 or S2 didn't have a footstand. Geekbuying S1 has a footstand. 6. Folding system often broke in Russian S1 and S2. Geekbuying S1 has the same folding as Russian S3 - improved. 7. Motor wheel wires in Russian S1 and S2 were getting worn after about 100km and the scooter broke because of that. In Geekbuying S1 it is fixed. Russian S1 was first manufactured and sold in 2016, but now it's not possible to buy it anywhere. In Russian market it was replaced by improved S2 and S3. Motor wheel on my Kugoo S1 bought in Geekbuying was manufactured in 2018 november 05, the date is written on the wheel, so it's pretty new. European version is different, so no, it's not an old outdated version that they are trying to sell again in Europe. I'd say it's a fresh start of Kugoo S1 in Europe with the same build quality as Russian S3 and same parameters as Russian S2.
