Kuhnau - Tristis est anima mea from Holy Trinity, Coventry

Here we can hear a quite ordinary work of late XVII century... I bet it was “one of many”. Johann Sebastian Bach did a really great work to turn it into a masterpiece-the motet “Der Gerechte kommt um” is absolutely stunning. Bach hasn’t been outrivaled since. Just compare the 00:11­-00:19 of Kuhnau and the same fragment of Bach’s remastering. The latter smites the listener under the fifth rib and leaves him helplessly spreadeagled under the colossus of Bach’s universal majesty.

I like both; Kuhnau did write a real gem, a masterpiece, just using human voices as an organ. Bach wrote another gem, using in a perfect way the sound of an ensemble plus a choir. The text is different, by the way; it's not a detail.
