Kuiu Kenai Ultra Hooded Jacket Review

In this video I dive into the in and outs of the Kuiu Kenai Hooded jacket. This insulated jacket is going to become a staple in my back country lineup in the years to come.

Nice review. Do you really find the Kenai jacket extremely windproof? I have both the original and current models and don't find them to be windproof at all. Hence the great breathability. By far the best jacket I've used for cool active hunts. My ultra down and down pro are extremely windproof though. Great while stationary. Depending on the temp (usually around 0 degrees or colder...I'm canadian so around 30) I just put my down over my Kenai when I'm stationary.

No I guess that was a poor choice of words. I found the jacket to be surprisingly wind proof or more then I was expecting. I thought that it was the perfect blend of breathability and wind resistance but not truly wind proof.

How does it compare to the sitka kelvin lite hoodie?

From what I understand the Kevin lite is warmer and more wind proof. The downside to that is that it is less breathable and louder. The reason I went with the Kenai is because I am bow hunting in it and I like the quieter material. I am also on the move and not hunting in any extreme cold so the breathability comes in handy.

Yessir! It’s been put through the ringer officially now and really has maybe one or two small tears but nothing major. Still highly recommend. Not sponsored or anything like that. Just a fellow gear junkie

How long could you sit in 10f with a decent base layer and the axis hybrid it’s a very decent wind stopper so I would think it would help?

Hi Sarah, I would be pretty confident in that system. My wife owns the axis and the combination of the two works very well and I think you would be comfortable in the two combined. Hope this helps!

@@BarDownBoys yes absolutely. I am currently replying in the middle of a pheasant hunt that is -22 degrees and 25 mph winds with that exact setup and I am toasty and even started to sweat a little. So I can now saw without a shadow of a doubt that you will be comfortable in that setup. Just make sure your axis is large enough to go over the Kenai

Appreciate the rundown. I'm torn between the Kenai and the Elements Kuiu hooded jackets. Not a hunter but nevertheless would appreciate a jacket that doesn't alert the entire room when I move 😒Seems both are good performers for use in adverse weather, but the biggest factors that delineate seem to be weight:warmth ratios, breathability, and noise.

Just spent the week in Jackson Hole in 10 degree weather and just had the Kenai and it did great! Highly recommend if your on the edge. Definitely size up though.

@@CalledCollectiveMedia size up for layering purposes? Or because they run small? I usually wear a medium because I hate longer stuff being on the shorter/stalker side (5'9 and a 42" chest). Large usually fits me better in the chest but looks like a dress on me 🙄🤦‍♂️

The element jack is wayyyyy warmer and robust than the Kenai. 70d fabric vs 30d. Also windproof as the Kenai is not. Also its much heavier but if your not hunting or carrying it in your pack its fine. Think of the element jacket as cold weather synthetic bomber but the Kenai as an active outer/mid layer designed to breath.

@@coachluke85 probably late here but this jacket is ment to be a mid layer and cut like a mid. Kuiu has cuts on the website. If it's mid, then you buy and outer, the outer is cut to order the same size so it fits over the mid. So in this case you have a base, then a long-sleeved shirt, then this jacket, then an outer shell. Elements is an outer layer and jot breathing.

I am 5 10 175 pounds and the large fits good for me. If your above 6 foot I would definitely recommend xtra large or more

You need to learn to pronounce kenai before you start to talk about things that were named after places in Alaska. Just saying.
