Kuji Kiri: Mukaku Ryu Kuji for Assassins

In this video I show a particular kujikiri (nine cuts) spell used by assassins. It is part of the teachings of Mukaku ryu 無覚流, a school that specializes in kodachi (short sword) and shuriken (throwing blades). The school is currently headed by Uematsu Yoshiyuki sensei, who also teaches another tradition called Mubyushu ryu. Kuji kiri is a magic spell that is a shorter version of kuji-in (nine hand seals). In this spell, the third stroke, "Toh", is done with a flick of the wrist. This spell makes the enemy not sense your presence as you sneak up to kill them. After the deed of killing, a shorter spell called kuji modoshi is done, which restores your power, and also gives thanks to the powerful spirits that aided you. In this video I'm wearing tekkou made by Harunaka Hoshino in 1991! And the blue jacket is cotton made in Japan. The grey haori is vintage from Japan. The hakama are just a cheap pair that I added kyahan to. I wove the sandals. The brown suit my friend is wearing I sewed from cotton.

Instead of a smooth motion for the third kuji kiri, toh, it's done with a quick jerk of the wrist as part of this variation of the spell.

That's just a part of this variation. The third cut, toh, is often thought of as symbolizing harmony with living things, so this version emphasizes the third stroke. Perhaps other variations add a flick to the other cuts. It's a magic spell.
