Is life meaningless? Milan Kundera tackled this question in “The Unbearable Lightness of Being”. We will explore this novel of French-czech literature in a new episode of “A Fictional World”. What is Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophical idea of Eternal Return? What does Milan Kundera mean with “Lightness” and “Weight”? And how does a bowler hat relate to all of this?

This book left a profound impact on me when I read it as a young girl. Now I have known quite a number of French men of a certain... milieu, who model their love lives after Tomas. It's kinda funny how much of a European trope that has become.

I initially wanted to release the video tomorrow but in light of Milan Kundera's death yesterday, I released it a day earlier to pay tribute to one of the greats. May he rest in peace.

I've just finished this book two days ago. Always had it but never read it. Once I heard of kundera's death I decided to read it and... it was a hard read for me. This video was a perfect way to close some scattered thoughts I had but couldn't put in order. Thank you.

The concept of eternal reoccurrence is extremely distressing . I did enjoy Kundera work .

I did not read the novel and just saw the movie, which is not comparable I know. But I am familiar with Nietzche's idea of "eternal recurrence." My parents (long dead) escaped Hungary in 1956. My dad was actually 22 years old and in Dresden during the 3-day bombing. But eternal recurrence is rubbish. It is simply there to question the importance of every moment in our life: do we want to relive this? Is it absolutely necessary? Do we live to be good (to others) or to serve ouselves? If we live this heaviness of recurring fate, life is also meaningless, which is why, if true, we should live life to be the best we can be, then it won't be meaningless.

An excellent analysis of an outstanding book. If you've already read the book or are having difficulty in the process, this video is invaluable. I'm in my third reading of the book (separated by several years) and have seen the movie three times. - Thank you.

I saw Lena Olin in a recent movie and of course I remembered her incredible performance in ULB. The last time I saw the movie was when it came out and it still has an impact on me, so it's only natural that I just ordered the novel. Time for a read!

The choice for 24 is simply stated: America or Trump. Truth or lies, peace or war, freedom or thiefdom… a clear binary choice.
