Taste of Trini

Күн бұрын

Kurhi or Karhee is one of our main Divali dishes back in Trinidad and Tobago. It is also a popular item at Hindu Prayers, and it is typically served on a sohari leaf over a bed of rice (use your index finger to create a hole in the center, so the boulders sit sturdy on the leaf). It is a dhal or split pea based soup, with a dense fried dough ball (similar to pholourie), which is called a boulder. The reasoning behind calling the dough balls boulders, is because they are very dense compared to pholourie.
Here's a recipe that was passed on from my mom to me, and it will be passed on to my future children. Happy Divali everyone!
Note: Although I grew up calling the fried balls "boulders", a viewer mentioned that it is also known as "pholourie".
Ingredients needed:
Boulders (pholourie)
3/4 cup of Split Pea/Dhal Powder + 1/4 cup of water
1/2 teaspoon of turmeric
Salt (to your preference)
Hot Pepper, chopped finely
4-6 cloves of Garlic, minced
4 leaves of Bandhania/Shadon Beni/Culantro/Recao
Kurhi (Karhee)
1/2 cup of Split Pea/Dhal Powder + 4 cups of Water + 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric Powder + 1/2 teaspoon Salt
1 tablespoon of Oil (to chunkay)
1 medium Onion, chopped
3-5 Curry/ Karrapillai Leaves
1 Hot Pepper, sliced
2 tablespoons of chopped Bandhania/Culantro/Shadon Beni/Recao
1/2 teaspoon Roasted Ground Geera
1/4 teaspoon Curry Powder
6-8 cloves of Garlic, minced
Make sure the Kurhi cooks for a total of 45minutes to an hour.
Serve over Rice and enjoy with Curried or Stewed Vegetables!
Like, Subscribe and Leave me comments- I want to hear from you!
Love,
R.

There are those that don't care what u are doing or appreciate the effort u are doing to make the lives of people much easier by cooking the recipe u have done but never the less, there will be critics and haters who will always put u down. Never give them a reason because u are one in a million. Never give up the fight because there's plenty of fans depending on u; and may the almighty always keep u well and honest as u are......

This is my favourite Divali/ Prayers dish - my mum makes hers with hard boulders since that's how she likes it, but I really like the type with softer boulders (which I had today from a temple my brother goes to) so I went looking for a recipe. You're one of the few out there, so thanks and good job.

Hi sweetheart. Quick question out of curiosity - do you speak any dialect of Hindi? I’m from Fiji, and of Indian decent and we speak our own dialect of Hindi. :) thanks for sharing love! We had kadhi for Diwali too!
@TasteofTrini
@TasteofTrini 7 жыл бұрын
Simply Blissful Living Hi! I don't speak any Hindi. My great-grandparents did, and never taught their children. It was more of a way of hiding their conversation from the children. They didn't think about passing the language along. We do however have a lot of Hindi names for utensils, food, and some of our dialect, but we speak primarily English. One word we us is "nah" which means no, but you all say "nahi".
@SBLtasteoffiji
@SBLtasteoffiji 7 жыл бұрын
Taste of Trini we use nah for no in Fiji too and we use nai instead of nahi. The dialect in Fiji is very different than in India. If you ever hear someone from Bihar speak hindi, it’s similar to the Hindi in Fiji.

While making dough lot of whisking is required. AFTER FRYING kadhi pakauris , immediately pour them in cold water then they become soft. While preparing gravy use curd and gram flour and whisk properly properly so that it tastes better. Use yellow mustards also along with other frying ingredients. This will convert your kadhi into Indian style rather Trinindian. Love from India.
