@benoitpellet16575 жыл бұрын
I have to admit that the idea of the Commendatore literally breaking down the wall in "Amadeus" was brilliant, but for overall effect (quality of the singing and acting, stage setting and the absolutely magnificent costumes of the damned in hell beckoning the Don to join them in torment), the production here attains perfection.

Sí! No! Sí! NO! SÍ! NOOO! You can hear the pain and growing fear in the Don Giovanni's voice and the inhumanity and impending doom in the sometimes inhumanly low notes from the Commander. And the composition only intensifies this!

This came from a live performance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. It was broadcast on PBS on Halloween, in 1991, the bicentennial year of Mozart’s death. The announcer for the telecast was none other than F. Murray Abraham, who won an Oscar for his performance of Antonio Salieri in the 1984 movie Amadeus.

The LORD has brought you to this clip, to see this... Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. Revelations 3:20 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near. Matthew 4:17 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him. Matthew 21:32 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, Acts 3:19 I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus. Acts 20:21 Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you. Revelation 3:3 Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. Revelation 2:5 TURN (repent) away from your sins. Put your TRUST in Jesus who died and payed on the cross for your sins. PRAY (in your own words) and call him to save you. If you will die it will be too late. As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” Hebrews 3:15

This is the point, actually ... Il Commendatore DOES come on a mission of mercy with an abbreviated version of this message, and the audience of Mozart's day would have known that. Thanks for spelling it all the way out, my brother...
@mehitabel12906 жыл бұрын
It's been said before, but Moll is wonderful: Intelligent, musical, sympathetic..... But just not FRIGHTENING. I love the musicality of this scene, but should we not be feeling sense of absolute terror? After all, the Commendatore has come to Drag DG To Hell.......
@hymnodyhands2 жыл бұрын
Moll is sympathetic ... but consider ... he actually manages the deeper part of the role that I have only seen Robert Allen and Franz-Josf Selig capture since. Mozart's audience would have known the references Da Ponte as librettist makes to Scripture: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock, and if any man hear my voice, I will come in and sup with him, and he with me" -- Rev. 3:20 is the Lord Himself, making a last effort to reach a sinning church. Il Commendatore, in the previous scene, KNOCKS, and he says in this scene that he has come from dining in Heaven ... and has come to invite Don Giovanni to dine with him ... IN HEAVEN. That is what Mozart and Da Ponte's audience, largely Catholic, would have known. Thus in one character, Il Commendatore represents the urgently seeking grace of God and the inexorable justice of God once grace is refused. Kurt Moll manages that, and puts the suggestion of the majesty of God in both aspects ON TOP of all that because his voice is so beautiful, and his acting is so commanding ... perhaps the angel Gabriel, clad in stone, proclaiming the message from heaven to turn from sin and be saved, almost beyond human emotion on the subject ... almost ... of all the performers in the role I have ever seen, few beside Herr Moll, at the end, hint at the deep, grim sadness there is when a sinner chooses not to repent, and thus chooses hell when he could have had heaven.

Anyone else feeling that Moll, despite of the great voice, is having huge trouble with staying in rhythm?
