Shifting is just maldaptive daydreaming and you can't convince me otherwise. I maldaptive daydream quite a lot during certain periods as a form of escapism and to process my emotions, but I'm very well aware of what's real and what isn't. (I've also discussed this with my psychiatrist and how it may help me as long as the lines aren't blurred. I'm also never "myself" but rather like the director playing out a movie with other characters from a 3rd person view. It helps keeping the distance very obvious). People calling this some cute little thing instead of what it is is very harmful. Even if maldaptive daydreaming can be a great tool, the lines between reality and dream needs to be very clear. If not, it's very dangerous. The brain is very sensitive after all.

This is the first I've heard of shifting, and as someone with PTSD, terrible coping mechanisms, as well as other mental health issues, this seems extremely harmful. This feels like a horrible case of people "spreading" dissociation. Teaching others that instead of dealing with your every day, adult/adolescent life, you can just sit and vividly imagine and pretend to be somewhere else. I've gone to therapy for this exact reason, stressful situations trigger my PTSD, and I dissociate to a state where I'm not in my body, I'm someone else, in a better situation than I currently am in. It's a SERIOUS mental issue that's a symptom of trauma, and the fact that people are spreading and teaching kids and other adults to do this is deeply disturbing to me. Dissociating and pretending your reality is not in front of you is very detrimental to your mental health, because it becomes hard to tell reality from imaginary. Take it from someone who has had multiple mental breakdowns and dissociated for literal months at a time. Please take care of yourselves, don't listen to this bullshit. 💜
@sabina75153 жыл бұрын
Yea i thought it's coming dangerously close to dissociation as well. A lot of people also compare it to lucid dreaming so maybe it's a mix of both but anyway, extremely harmful especially since a lot of kids are trying this to escape their realities and go into exiting fantasies. I hope you are doing better and i hope your reality is now better than your dreams.
@sytheebad3 жыл бұрын
I agree, however shifting is more meditative than anything else. You completely relax your body and your mind and fall asleep and wake up in a different reality (it’s a bit more complex than that). But i do think that people on the internet (especially tiktok) have taken it too far. I’ve seen so many false stories and dumb techniques to help you shift, and even heard some total bs about what you should or shouldn’t do. I hate that something so amazing and impossibly cool being turned toxic by the internet again. I’m so sorry about what you have heard about us shifters… i hope this helped? (also, i have adhd and dissociate all the time. i totally get it💕)

Yep. I have PTSD and BPD, and trying any of this would just be purposely dissociating. Which, unfortunately, is tempting but SUPER dangerous…especially to people like us.
@summers90523 жыл бұрын
im torn about it because like,,, maybe these kids really do feel the need to escape their reality for a bit, maybe it does help for the short term for someone who may really need it. but on the other hand it’s never good to make full dissociation your full time coping mechanism, and it’s even shittier to romanticize it, give it a cutsey little name like “shifting” and repackage it for teenagers to learn how to do themselves 💀

When I was younger, like 8-12, I remember trying to fall asleep but having a hyperactive brain making it a bit difficult. I would close my eyes and imagine myself in various fictional universes I enjoyed like Pokemon, Power Rangers, etc. I would go through months or years of timeline in my head (with big time skips) just for fun. Sometimes I would actually fall asleep while doing it and experience pretty vivid dreams that lined up with my "headcanon" that I was imagining beforehand. It was pretty fun and entertaining. I got to be a Pokemon trainer sometimes or like the Green ranger. Despite my semi-hallucinations and vivid dreams that I thoroughly enjoyed, not once did I ever think what I was experiencing was real.

I've made up stories in my head that are essentially self-insert fiction/fanfiction before bed ever since I was a child. Sometimes it just helps to get to sleep. I don't actually think I'm an archangel stuck in the midst of a war between heaven and hell, it's just an interesting story to imagine. Like watching a movie in my head. It's interesting exploring the different ways the story could unfold, and the different possibilities your mind comes up with based on your feelings/thoughts at the time. I don't think I've ever dreamed about it, but sometimes it's nice to daydream or make up stories. I think the damage comes when you believe it's real.

But if everyone who is at risk or worried about covid got the vaccine and wears a mask why does it matter if people who aren't worried about it don't wear a mask or get the vaccine? If the vaccine and masks work so well then doing that for yourself should be enough to protect you from people who haven't/can't get the vaccine and won't/can't wear a mask. If the mask and the vaccine can't protect you and that's why you need other people to mask up and get the vaccine that makes no sense either because there's no point in forcing people to do that if it isn't effective.

As a schizotypal depressed person I am SO glad shifting wasn't a thing before I got treatment. That would have made the whole thing a hundred times worse, a whole community basically validating my delusions and adding fuel to the fire. People who seem to take shifting seriously are straight up lying to vulnerable people for clout, or have some mental health issues. Daydreaming, cosplaying, fanfic, whatever that's great. But straight up believing you're shifting to another universe? That's the most maladaptive coping mechanism I've ever heard of.

Before starting my comment i'd like to say that I'm not a psychologist, a doctor, What I'll say is based on some articles that I've read so not everything I'll say will be correct, if you have any knowledge on this please let me know ! English isn't my first language so I'm sorry for the mistake and if it's unclear I don't believe in shifting in the way that you go in another which impossible *for me* (i respect other's beliefs), but I think that shifting is a phase between being awake and asleep, so possible in that way So kinda like lucid dream ? Because they listen to repetitive music and count in their head/out loud while being in a starship position so uhm i think they're either in a lucid dream, hypnotized or it's a placebo effect. They believe it to the point that they think it's real, let's take for example *some* extreme religious people who are obsessed with s4tan to the point that they think he's everywhere, and they'll start thinking that they're possesed so it will affect them, and their brain will make up symptoms that are only in their head but since they believe really hard in it, it'll affect their mental/physical health so it goes the same for shifters because their beliefs can change how they perceive the world, it can affect their irl life and even dreams

I'm honestly so glad someone's addressing shifting as a potentially harmful coping mechanism rather than just a crazy person rambling, I fully believe it's a coping mechanism but it stops being useful when you see tiktoks literally teaching people to disassociate and derealize to 'enhance the experience' or 'shift while awake' or whatever, it's extremely harmful when you start seperating reality and telling people to essentially question which is their real reality and which is their Preferred reality, when it's addressed as just Crazy quirky people being quirky its really reductive of the harm it can cause and is just insulting to the people most likely doing it to escape a bad circumstance irl

This has been said about the Tiktok shifting community by literally EVERYONE who doesn't know what they are talking about. You can say this about literally any community. We need to teach kids to know their limits, not shun anything that could possibly trigger a mental illness. You could say, "well reading books teaches kids to disassociate and derealize, we should burn all the books. It's not quirky to read, if someone in a bad circumstance were to get their hands on a book, they would be seriously harmed." Shifting is literally just Lucid Dreaming. The TikTok 'shifting' community are literally just normies who think they are quirky, but you wouldn't call Twilight fans the 'average consumer of modern literature' now would you? Should we teach kids that dreaming is bad because some people take it too far and disassociate? Ugh, when it comes to shifting, everyone suddenly has a phd in psychology and it's fucking annoying.

exactly my problem with “shifting”.i have psychosis and delusions about alternate realities/ delusions of grandeur. its so unhealthy to promote this sort of stuff as a “healthy” coping mechanism. it genuinely effects my perception of reality and seeing stuff like this saying im just having a spiritual awakening of some sort is doing more harm than good to people like myself. heavy dissociation isn’t a trend and if you are experiencing it please seek a professional if you can.

It can be extremely dangerous for those who are depressed, as they could take their own life to escape to this perceived other reality. Lucid and vivid dreaming is a side effect of depression and anxiety medications as well, so you're more likely to have these experiences that you think is "shifting" you to another universe, when reality it's a world created from your imagination that's grounded in your known experiences.

“Shifting” is literally just lucid dreaming. It’s something you can learn and with guided meditation it’s fairly easy. It’s usually not harmful but when full grown adults on tiktok are telling kids that if someone dies while their “shifting” that person is actually dead shit hits the fan. These kids are going to end up needing like actual professional help. If their lucky they’ll be fine but at worst they’re going to end up with fixed delusions and psychosis
