The Captain Of Her Heart
It was way past midnight
and she still couldn't fall asleep.
This night the dream was leaving,
she'd tried so hard to keep
and with the new day's dawning
she felt it drift away,
not only for a cruise
not only for a day.
Too long ago, too long apart,
she couldn't wait another day for
the captain of her heart
As the day came up she made a start,
she stopped waiting another day for
the captain of her heart

In 1986, after 10 hours of flying to get from NYC to Hawaii for our honeymoon, I fell asleep in the taxi from the airport in Honolulu, and awoke to this song as the sun was setting and the sweet warm tropical air was wafting in the window. We were also passing Pearl Harbor. I said to myself then that this song is going to remind me of this moment for the rest of my life.

I was young, madly in love when this song came out. He was a captain, an army pilot, so handsome, but older than me. Our lives were so different and complicated but we were in love. He’d be away on missions, the long distance phone calls when he could call and the postcards, were my life line. I can remember driving home alone late at night thru the city and passing thru the veil of street lights listening to this song after being out with my girlfriends. I was absolutely in love and loyal to him but miserable because of our lives apart. The Gulf War broke out and painfully we went our separate ways; years past, we each married. He would always contact me on my birthday,ask how I was, and how my husband was doing and wish me happiness. We didn’t see each other for over ten years. Fate and our careers had our paths cross. He had divorced and I was going through one…. We’ve been together 23 years and married 17 yrs. We’re still in love. We are happy and blessed with our life. Time is precious and we can never get those ten years back but he will always be the captain of my heart.❤

oh indeed, as soon as this song starts playing it takes me back to the 80s when i was living in California. its definitely a nostalgia trip Art of Noise: moments in love, MARRS: pump up the volume, Tina Turner: we don't need another hero (mainly due to beyond thunderdome being a childhood favorite movie), Real Life: Send Me an Angel (movie RAD), Paul Young: everytime you go away, and Level 42: Lessons in Love are a few more, not to mention quite a few from Duran Duran. and quite a few more songs from movie ending credits.

The great thing about the 80s was that music was pluralistic. This was on the charts with new wave, metal, dance, rock, and similar groups like Sade and later Basia and Swing out Sister. Music on the charts didn't seem to have to fit a mold.

I'm so glad I was in my 20s during the 80s. I realized only as I got older how special that time was in my life and not just because of the music, but the music was a huge part of it. Still have all my vinyl from that time in very good condition. I can't believe they survived all my apartment moves and exes in the L.A. area. Though one ex tried to make off with some of them, but got them back just in time. Luckily, they are safely in a townhome I bought about 20 years ago. I'm 60 now and feel like I'm in my 20s again when I hear this music. I'll have that feeling forever, and I'm so grateful for that at this stage in my life.

Townhomes/Condos must of costed dirt cheap back in those days. I remember they were selling for like $60-90K during the early 90s in the (good) suburbs of Los Angeles. I was barely an adult teen back then with zero money otherwise I'd be well set today!
@theexmann
@theexmann 3 жыл бұрын
@@80sGuy. It depends when in the 90s you bought it. They were more expensive in the early 90s than the late 90s. But, yes, much more relatively affordable compared to today especially in the L.A. metro area which is where I live. A similar townhome in my area sold for $430,000 a few weeks ago. That is crazy. There is no way I would be able to afford that today. I'm grateful to have it today. I don't see how young people can buy a place in L.A. today. BTW, my place is a 2 story, 2 bd/2ba unit with a 2 car garage.

@@johnmarlow7959 True. I'm just saying that to have been in your 20s during the time this music was brand new and playing at all the clubs was amazing, but we didn't know in real time how special and historic it was until decades later. I was in college around this time and remember seeing The Pretenders perform at a free outdoor quad area before they were really famous. This was around 1978. I was 18 years old and beginning to sneak into dance clubs all over L.A. The beginning of an amazing decade for me. I'll never forget that time and it will always be a part of me. I listen to those songs today and they immediately take me back to a specific moment in time. That is what I cherish now and so grateful to have had that experience in my 20s during the 80s.

Otros tiempos fueron mejores, volver a escuchar estas composiciones de los ochenta me traslada aquellos años donde aun tenia 6 o 7 años, donde aun el mundo era mas estable.

Sublime. As a teenager in the 80's I have a whole stack of records collected from the day. Many hold up, some don't through the years. This one undoubtedly does. Loved it then and loved it now just as much. The smooth melody, lyrics, tone. For me, one of the very best tracks of the 80's. A one-hit wonder from the band. And sheesh, what a killer. Thanks for uploading & thanks to Double.

My dad used to always listen to the smooth jazz station when he would take me to school. One day I heard this and it stuck out to me. Almost a decade later and I still haven’t forgotten it.

Beautifully constructed piece of music. The selection of instruments compliment eachother perfectly. Great simplistic breaks in the music. Very nice.
