Kurzweil K2000 LCD Replacement - LED display upgrade

This video demonstrates how to replace the factory LCD display for a Kurzweil K2000. My LCD was very dim, and I purchased a replacement from www.backlightso.... There were no installation instructions with the unit, so I created this video hoping it will help others.

One good thing to also mention is that on the rack unit(K2000r) the mounting pads for the screen need to be shortened 1/8”. The front glass is also attached with adhesive. Luckily I found this in a non English video before I replaced my screen. Otherwise, the face plate of the machine will not go back into place & will look strange without the original window. it’s pretty much the same process, in all other aspects. Thank you for the detailed description on how to dissemble the KZ and get to the LCD display. My only comment is that you might want to have some static grounding (wrist/feet band and mat) to avoid any possible electrostatic that might effect the boards. Regards

Two questions:: don’t you have to ground yourself while working on the unit? And, what happens to the power cable that is no longer needed for the new lcd? It’s hard to see what happens to it in the video. Thanks! I’m going to try to install mine soon. Just bought one on eBay.

Hello given your experience if possible I would like to ask you a question: I have a Kurzweil K.2000 VP 3.87, the keyboard (the keys) are however very "soft" when I touch the sound, I ask if it is possible to replace the keys with other semi-weighted ones, for example for example with those like Yamaha DX7II fd, Korg 01W, or with other brands; thanks if you want to answer me.

I am not that advanced in keyboard replacement, but I don’t think that would be possible. I would just use another MIDI controller keyboard with the K2000 as a slave.

its possible that the strip has went out, Ive replaced my strip before to get the sound balanced with other keys, or just get another ivory K2 keyboard.

I just replaced mine . There is no contrast adjustment for the new display right ? That control does not work in "master " mode anymore which I assume is normal . Very helpful video . It helped me a lot .

I think that is normal. I haven't checked, but the LED is bright and I never want to turn it down.

@@phamilton38 If you go to " master " mode , on the right side where you would normally adjust the contrast , you can change the numbers but it would not affect anything on the display. Let me know if your is the same way

Hi, thanks for this video. It was useful to me and I followed along all the way with my new display. It differed from yours in that it had two additional tiny cables that I don't know where to plug. So I zip tied them inside the unit, out of the way of the board and when I fired the synth up afterwards, the display just gave backlight, no text, no nothing. Do you happen to know anything about this? Thanks a ton.

Hi there. I would check with the manufacturer. I think they have newer LED displays which will have different instructions. (Sorry).

hi. i have a pc3k and recentley made a mistake by connecting the lcd flat on to the wrong slot on the engine board and the other flat on the lcd slot. now even with the mistake undone i have no video signal, the screen remains lit all the time. can you tell me if i damaged some specific component in the engine board or lcd? the video generation in the pc3 is made by a dedicated chip? thanks

Hi Arthur. I would try to contact the manufacturer of your LCD, or if your old one was working (but dim), reinstall that and see if it is working. I have only done a couple of these replacements and didn't plug into the wrong connector. (Sorry....)

what is that cable and small metal box attached to your lower case? I opened mine recently and it doesn't have that. Nice video though.

I think that would be the floppy drive, but it's a bit hard to tell as I don't have the unit open right now.

Peter Hamilton nah, the floppy is attached to the main case with everything else. I feel like it's some kind of fan or ventilation.

Yes, that is the cover for the fan.

I couldn't answer that question. It is a standard PC fan in there, and I didn't install it myself, it came with the unit.

ive got a k2000 and none of the buttons work that I press and the cursor wheel dosent work too but every thing else works any ideas on how i can fix it

I wish I could help you with that issue, but unfortunately I am not a bona-fide technician. Perhaps another forum may be a better place for your issue.

to replace two keys do I need to take all the electronics apart first?

I believe you do. I haven't replace keys on the K2000, but I have on other synths and there is a lot of disassembly required. :(

Yes, it was the $90 model. It includes the ribbon cable and is easier to install.
