During the first two weeks of my master's degree at Hertfordshire, I was completely lost and I thought I had entered the wrong class. I almost missed out on assignment submission and my marks were deducted on several occasions for submitting 1hr late. All I had to do was to double up my reading tasks and become more proactive. It paid off actually and it's one of my best decisions.

I completed my masters stateside - and it is very similar to what you described in the UK. It's definitely a ton of weekly research (on different platforms) reading (100 pages or more per week) , writing (so much writing, lol - I'm now a master BS'er) & analyzing (be prepared to support and defend your work). No hand-holding or spoon-feeding from professors, but they are usually accommodating and helpful, once you reach out to them. You are held to a much higher standard than undergrads, and are expected to do well (B grade or higher) even if you work full-time, raise a family, undergo major illness, etc. If your motivation/determination is weak, and you are easily distracted by "life", don't do it. But if you are driven, disciplined and enjoy the structure of academia - go for it!

It's not easy oo. Especially for people who didn't do studies in English. Also, in some countries we don't really do academic writing, my advice is to take a research methods course online with the platforms like Coursera , udemy or any others. Once you master the research methods, you'll fine to do your studies. Also, know some tools to use in paraphrasing and referencing like mendeley, endnote and others. Also, where I come from , we do explain each other especially modules like statistics. So, here it's like a competition even homeworks, they can do in groups and know who is smart in that module and be working with that person and get good grades. Discussion is another thing. They don't wait to get ideas from everyone, the talkative monopolize the discussion and it's like you're not there 😅.

Being responsible for your work and organising yourself is fairly normal for Bachelors degrees in the UK. Even at 16 years and 18 years old in the UK it is normal for your end of year tests to be marked by someone who is not your teacher, has never met you and may never have visited your school.

The biggest Question is this why go for a Masters when the job Market is choked. Many Students go for a masters just to postpone their entry into the Employment Market after a First degree. Find a life that you love instead of worrying about Educational certificates. Ghana and Nigeria have too much love for Degrees. The coursework is hard and to make it worse it is expensive.

Tbh, re having class mates who have some experience in the field; I think moving straight from an undergraduate degree to a graduate course isn't the best. Unless, you're trying to makeup for a lower BSc grade, take time to practice in your chosen, to whatever extent, have an idea, develop soft skills before getting thrown into another round of study. Very informative. I currently work as an Assistant Professor in Engineering at a University in the UK having schooled in the UK's educational system up to PhD. From an insider view, academic programs in the UK are planned well in advance before starting/resumption of the academic year, with the learning materials, topics, coursework, exams etc. timelines concluded. At MSc level, students are expected to have some degree of independence and be self motivated to drive the outcome of their work. At that level, there is a huge diversity of experience among students. Students can take an advantage of this experience to learn the real world scenarios of the course, which in engineering is the industrial application/perspective of the module. It is totally a different experience from Nigeria.

I didn’t Shaw a problem. In University u need to care about yourself and ofc is completely normal to help people who needs. But u can’t be comfortable waiting to people do the same for u, as u said u are on your own. U must start walking with your on feet and do things for yourself. U need to push yourself. U can give up or fight. Masters u need to be 1 step ahead always. If it was easy everyone would be doing it. U’re there to prove urself. Sorry if I kinda disagree but my point is people normally like easy things so when the see someone complicated the always complaining instead of find a way to do it.

Off course you have to be motivated and keep up with the pace and surely ask questions because the well won't come to the thirsty. I just don't understand the complain. I did my LLM in India and I worked like a beast of burden. At least three days a week we had course tests ...we had reasearch papers to write vivas to attend and notes to make....and yes you cannot expect to be taught a for Apple b for ball...you need to go study and know stuff and read and what's 50 different modules? At master's level you should not expect a three page pamphlet. I don't understand your concern....you say if you don't attend they won't bother ..of course they will continue without you...why wait for you alone...if you're a master's student don't expect to be spoon fed...you need to read stuff and attend class that's how you will contribute and be able to engage. I think your expectations are misplaced...you sound like you need your professors to literally start by waking you up from your sleep....

Am still trying to figure out what did I get myself into. Did mine online and I develop panic attack. Never had I been to school and leave being mad at everything including the world. Was even madder when I get the piece of paper which shows that I almost never pass the course. When I submitted that dissertation on the due date (which almost never happen mind you) I throw all things about school from my head not even the completion fee was paid because I was glad to finish and did not have any care afterwards. That was 2019. Last year (2021) on reaching a milestone in my birthday I decide to apply for my degree as a bday present to myself. From then on I can't sit myself still to learn anything as my learning style changes. I felt as if I read for that piece of paper. Teaching -learning leaves me hating school forever now especially since feedback was lacking and you only know you fail when the grade is posted in your account. Communication between faculty and students was very poor. We are communicating animals and the lecturers seem not trained to offer that, much. How does this institution have so many students still attending am not even sure.
@KusemeIseh2 жыл бұрын
I could relate to your experience. There are departments in schools that could help you navigate your way. Speak to your course tutor, librarian or student services. They should be able to guide you. Wishing you the very best.

@@KusemeIseh Gurl am done with school (in every way, graduated too). LoL! We just had the graduation recently as the pandemic changes things in 2020. But as I said communication with faculty was null and void especially since I was an international student. I did try at one point to contact via phone but didn't understand how to with international calls. Emails didn't help. But I pressed on because I wasn't a quitter. I now have the Degree in hand but I feel like I wasted my life tho and it has no use to me. But I shall frame it good. Am even planning myself an over the moon graduation dinner. Think me not celebrating the fact that I am still alive? LO! 😂😂🤣🤣

This is actually a soft version of bachelor degree faculty in Bosnia. Masters are 10 times worse. From the first class to the last one, professors won't care about you. Attending to classes is not an absolute must do, but it all depends from professor to professor. Nobody is going to chase you to do your work and you can't really learn a lot for the exam in the class (except in some rare cases). If you really want to learn, you have to read a lot and many times without a proper context (you should get from the class). And yeah in terms of duration: bachelor is 4 years + master 2 years. Total experience: everything is cold and cruel towards the students and it should change asap.
