All the qualities that a child should have. When you look at life, it is how we should live all the time. I'm not sure what it is that when we get older and heavier responsibilities sets in, we loose that really colorfulness that is so important for healthy growth. I can't pinpoint it - if it's cultural guidance and pressure, or more of just the nature of maturity with time. In any case, I enjoyed the time that you shared about the exhilarating fun you had with your brothers. I know there was the unfortunate event of losing one of your eye, but understand it was an innocent accident and nobody is at fault. It might have been saved if proper care was given. But, it is understandable that we are limited to the knowledge and resources at hand. The Vietnam war and its aftermath is extremely hard on all of our people. I don't know the more exact numbers, but you said about 50% lived and 50% died. I feel that it is much more on the losses, but even at 50% out of millions, that is premeditate massacre. And as far as I know, our leaders have not sincerely sought justice for what happened. I am very happy that you were lucky enough to cross into Thailand and then to the US. The younger generations who were not mature enough to understand, do not see how desperate, dangerous, and dire it was. They take it for granted that the good opportunities and good life here was just entitled to them. Of course, the integration of life here was not easy - two cultures clashing at ever level make understanding between young and old seemingly impossible. So much turmoil arose and still rising. At this time, we can't go back and redo things. Choices have been made and the journey maturing. But, reflecting back, it is very important that we value ourselves and others with the same respect. We need to hold our self-esteem strong and so to reflect confidence, respectability, and assertiveness. I feel that the lost of your right eye really have diminish your overall self-worth. But you see, it's not really a big disability if you really think about it. You still have good sight in one eye and all of the rest of the body functions. I like the analogy of imaging extra body parts to substantiate the inadequate/missing abilities. So in you case, I would imagine that I have an extra arm(so three arms!). And, that extra limb would be use for extra love and extra care, and extra tenderness so that the lost of vision can be remedied in the mind. I would tell my lover that "you might have one less eye to love, but you have three arms, and the one unseen is the most wonderful, unique, and gentle and it's all yours"! You see, you can make up for anything that you are short of, and when you touch her with that "third arm", you can put all of your love, tenderness and care. she will never care/know that you only have one eye. You also have to take are of your other needs too, like your mental and physical heath. Eating right and regular exercise can hold down aging factors. I think your wife's infidelity is attribute to three major factors: Lack of Growth in Love and Respect, the Fad of taking advantages of the poor in Laos, and the lack of Future Planning and Stability. Of these, the growth in love and respect is the most important. We have to see each other, understand each other, and explicitly get involve to accentuate the good, the strong, and the desired qualities. Only when one is totally contempt at being loved will they more likely to give love. Now, you can't force love or respect, but with enough sincerity and trying, goodness always triumphs or at least honesty will follow. So I think this is what was missing, and the other issues just follows as ramifications. The Fad will be short lived; we will understand the unethicalness of it soon, and the future planning couldn't happened because you two never found true love and respect long enough to start. I'm sorry for your hardship in life but hopeful that you will find peace and hominy.
