Growing up between Seattle and Vancouver BC I used to stay up late just so I could see the signoff and this rendition of Oh Canada, don't know why it still brings tears to my eye guess it's because it's a bit old fashioned but stll poignant like an old neighborhood friend whom never changes. It always takes me back to where I grew up.

@419Films I hear you. I used to live in the Kitsilano neighborhood of Vancouver, BC where KVOS had their Canadian offices. They served both USA and Canadian markets so I guess they needed a place up here where they could serve Canadians directly. Truly one of the great cross-border TV stations!

Used to stay up late just so I could hear this Canadian National Anthem. We lived midway between Seattle and Vancouver BC so before cable we were lucky enough to get a couple extra TV stations , 2 CBUT and KVOS out of Bellingham and sometimes a grainy channel 6.

I grew up watching KVOS. I always found it interesting, being based in the US, they played "Oh, Canada" first. Thanks for bringing me back. :-)

Good old KVOS. They've been there since we had a roof antenna and got 4, maybe 5 channels!

KVOS TV Channel 12 Bellingham, WA. came on the air in 1953. I was born and raised in Everett, WA (28 miles north of Seattle).Channel 12 had the strongest signal of all TV stations over the air, in Everett even with just rabbit ears antenna. We used an exterior roof mount antenna to receive Seattle and Tacoma stations KVOS TV was a CBS affiliate until KIRO-TV 7 came on the air in Seattle, WA. KIRO TV came on the air as CBS in 1958. The KVOS sign on and sign off had "Oh Canada" and "The Star Spangled Banner" played showing the Peace Arch at Blaine, WA. at the U.S. and Canada border. I was 9 years old in 1953 and enjoyed KVOS daily! KVOS TV became an Independent station after KIRO TV Seattle came on the air. Call letters "KVOS" stood for Kessler's Voice Of Seattle. The CBS affiliate for Seattle (before KIRO TV 7 signed on in 1958) was covered by The Tacoma News Tribune's KTNT-TV Channel 11 in Tacoma, WA. It is interesting to read others memories of growing up with KVOS TV 12. Bellingham, Washington. Thanks to all for your memories!

The choral version of "The Star Spangled Banner" is unique and beautiful !!

I'm Canadian, from Vancouver, and much as I love "O Canada," I prefer the American anthem for its more sophisticated musical structures. // Although often played in a grandiose or almost-bombastic style, this sign off of "The Star Spangled Banner," sung in acapella, with beautiful Northwest Washington scenery, is one of the most serene and charming versions of the US anthem I know. I used to watch this as a kid, and I loved it. .... not to mention that this part of the world is one of the most beautiful. The San Juan Islands, Whatcom County, Skagit County ... a corner of America to be treasured.

I miss the old KVOS. MeTV is nice but I miss when they aired a variety of shows rather than just classics.

I'm sure the owners don't really care about KVOS anymore than as another property to keep afloat.
@looneytunes90002 жыл бұрын
@@ChristopherSobieniak The owners are none other than Weigel Broadcasting of Chicago, who also owns KVOS’ sister station KFFV, MeTV, and Heros and Icons. Now a days, KVOS 12.1 and KFFV 44.3 are H&I O&O’s(technically KFFV DT3 simulcasts KVOS on 44.3 while KVOS simulcasts KFFV on 12.3) KFFV is a MeTV O&O station branded as “MeTV Seattle” while MeTV’s new service MeTV Plus, is on KFFV 44.6. Weigel owns MeTV Plus.

After watching many of these sign-offs (at bedtime, of course), I think KVOS added some pictures to the stock Canadian anthem. Perhaps scenes from B.C., since it's so close?

So gorgeous though, it is sooo moving and it nearly brings tears to my eyes!

There was another station that played two national anthems. That station was XETV Tijuana/San Diego. In the final years as a FOX station, they played the Star Spangled Banner and Himno Nacional Mexicano. Now, they just play the Mexican anthem (required by law). It's interesting to see KVOS play two anthems.
@ChristopherSobieniak7 жыл бұрын
At least they remember their Mexican roots down there, even if Tijuana isn't really represented on the station.

MrWEWE5 There are a few other station's that do this. KOMO in Seattle, and a few in very upper NY State.

WTVS in Detroit did this as well. And WPBS Watertown, NY.

It was common for border stations to play both anthems as a courtesy to Canadian viewers. This is the National Film Board's "With Glowing Hearts" version.

Some non-CBC stations also used that sign-off too, so I'm sure it was provided by someone else (probably the National Film Board of Canada).
@daveporter02175 жыл бұрын
The video is called "With Glowing Hearts," and was a National Film Board production, circa 1978.

The "o canada" sounds exactly like the one used for CBC's Sign on and Sign off for many years after.

O, Canada, our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The true North, strong and free. From far and wide, O Canada, We stand on guard for thee! God keep our land glorious and free O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O, Canada, we stand on guard for thee. NOTE: The government changed the one line a few years back in the name of "inclusion". The second line now reads: "True patriot love in all of us command".

Just stay on your side of the border so you don't get triggered. It is supposed to be a lively tune, the music is a drinking song for petes sake. It isn't a funeral dirge.
