Sometimes people say things for shock and entertainment value, to play devil's advocate but this particular episode is just outrageous. Firstly well done Scanty for presenting a good and thoughtful insight to the topic. Some of the panelist are of the assumption that mental health is unique to young people. Where is the consideration for the parents in all of this? If you've ever been associated with someone who is deliberately breaching what is considered normal by all reasonable people you won't be saying the things you're saying. How many children or young adults have sat down to ask their parents or care givers what it's cost them (not limited to finances) to care for them. The burden it is sometimes cannot be put in words and to have someone say just because you paid for my school fees. We will turn around and condemn them for not taking us to school but when they do it is rubbished because now we are independent. What do you imagine this father is going through? Come to the mental health side, I've worked in mental health for many years now, especially with young adults, in the west that you like to glorify soo much. A large number in fact I would go as far as say 90% of interviews conducted all tell the same story, they wish someone would've set boundaries for them long ago, they wish someone would've been honest with them about the trappings of social media and self discipline. Being a strict parent or desiring to set your child on the right path is not an African thing, stop saying that. Family name means something. Once again well done Scanty. We need to educate the young ones that mental health is not an excuse to indulge any and all behaviour and then to play the victim when things end badly.

It could have been the case where the dad spoke to the daughter and his daughter did not listen and now the father is fed up to the point where he is using aggression. Just like Scanty said, when persuasion fails, force is applied. Maybe the approach of her dad wasn't the best option, but then at the same time, the daughter should know better. To add to this, everyone is different, what may work for one will not work for another. It might be a conversation for one person, but it may require a stern rebuke for another. Whenever it comes to African parenting, why do we always use the Western world as yardstick to measure the success of how well our parents did? Let’s not base it on illusions. I know some African parents who are loving and caring more than some Westernised culture. I come from such home. The fact that I am getting disciplined does not mean I am hated or not liked. Sometimes our parents go over board. But if such values of discipline were not instilled in us, how would we have thrived into our adulthood. Why are some kids raised in the Western world brought back to African countries for discipline but not left in the Western world ? Because it is simple. There are no culture and moral boundaries in the Western world to mould a child. Let’s not throw our cultured society away in the name of freedom and knowing your rights. Yes your rights should and must be respected. But your values must be in touch. If the tone or approach of father is wrong, let’s address that rather than saying that she is an adult and can do what she wants. Yet will that not be her family to usher her into marriage she finds her husband ? Why should she not go straight to marry on her own ? Every family have values and conducts that society is built on. Let’s not throw it away but rather address ways it could be improved such as addressing mental health and approaches for that.
