Why do we have Street kids in Kenyan streets after all these men who go through the "rite of passage"-purpose of ego. Kenyan men don't hold doors for women and kids, 30yo and 70yo man hang out boozing(where is the application of culture here).

If you read the book 'Imperial reckoning - the untold story of Britain's Gulag in Kenya' and listen to this song you can shed a tear. The amount of suffering gikuyu people went through from 1900s to 1963. One lawyers said he was convinced without doubt that there was a plan by white man to wipe out the gikuyu people. Records show that close to 400,00 gikuyu were killed through torture and absolute barbarism in order to get their land. For that I will always be thankful for MAU MAU.

This song was a prayer before they went for battle against the colonialist. At that time, they had lost hope for a better future (kíeha) because the white man had taken away their freedom and mostly, their key capital which was also their children's inheritance, that is the land. The prayer was an appeal to God , the one who takes care (Mutangíri) of their army [ita, bet you heard off ita rí hamwe or intrahamwe from our cousins in Rwanda] the one who receives sacrifices offered by His people ( Mwamukíri magongona ma andú airú) to let love and respect [read obedience to authority while in battle] (wendani na gítío)reign among His people and genuine concern over the welfare of the community (tha nyingi cia rwendo rwa rurírí) and the unity of purpose in the community as desired in times of battle (úiguano wa Gikuyu na Mumbi) and lastly, that they may win the war and thrive again ( tukonana ringi, hindí ío kíeha nígígathira...) My interpretation isn't literal, as , most kikuyu songs can't fit that bill. They have mich deeper meaning than the leiteral words express. ... The prayer also curses the collaborators because instead of fighting for freedom they are fighting for slavery and no Kikuyu was ever a slave, may be a servant but not a slave. Slavery was a curse. If I could add, that last bit...Túrí a Mumbi...means we belong to God the creator.. its the prayer ending with confirming that all said and done ,we belong to God.

Heard this song on my recent trip to Kenya, not in Nairobi but in a Mombasa joint and my sister mentioned that it has been the anthem for such a long time in some kikuyu social gatherings around the country. Today I remembered the song while sharing with family, then I searched for it on you tube just now. Can't have enough of this song ever, a truly remarkable prayer, so sad that the freedom fighters and our forefathers went through so much during the struggle. Mwene nyaga twakúhoya. Kwame you have a great voice too, makes this prayer so special.

Played this song for my Dad and he sung it word for word. There were some sections of the song that are missing from this version that may not be relevant today. Said it was a prayer that predates the War for independence (Emergency 1950's). Said in the 50's they would sing/pray the song and grown men would shed tears.

@@joenmuthiga9712 pole if I butcher the spelling but I hear Maito- mother, Gikuyu na Mumbi- Gikuyu and Mumbi, Gai - God and of course Mwene Nyaga :) and oh turia mumbi means children of Mumbi I guess. I know other Gikuyu words though like aterere, rosio, negatho muno, ruracio, wemwega and nikiwega, oka, ninegdwete :) I am sure by now you know that I am married to a Gikuyu man. :) I love the whole culture and language.

I cried painfully today listening to this song, funny thing is it's not the first time am litsening to it🤔 .our ancestors went through hell in their own land.. others gave in and accepted white man's ways due to fear and intimidation....imagine women and children 😭 must have been traumatic, this is what has been passed on from generation to generation 😭😔
