Liz Truss fired her chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng on Friday and scrapped parts of their economic package in a desperate bid to stay in power and survive the market and political turmoil gripping the country.
Subscribe to Guardian News on KZbin ► bit.ly/guardianwiressub
Kwarteng said he had resigned at Truss's request after being forced to rush back to London overnight from IMF meetings in Washington. Kwarteng is the country's shortest serving chancellor since 1970, and his successor will be the fourth finance minister in as many months in Britain, where millions are facing a cost of living crisis. The chancellor with the shortest tenure died.
Here is a look back at Kwarteng's last 24 hours as chancellor.

His only mistake was Trussting a snake. What people need to realise is that Liz main priority is not energy bills, the economy or even the war in the Ukraine. Her main, overacting priority, of which she is so eager to engage in is the "Culture (Race) War". It's funny how everyone has forgotten this about her. Her plan was to use Kwasi as a prop but real life put an end to those plans. Kwasi probably knew this but went along with it as a career opportunist, so I do not feel sorry for him.

This really shows that money has no real value. One person can devalue something that 66 million people use with a few words. Isn't that bizarre?
@bennyl7224
@bennyl7224 Жыл бұрын
It’s not one person though. Every currency is devaluing against the USD, plus no one wants to buy bonds anywhere because they’ll have to up the interest rates. That’s why central banks are buying their own bonds again. Japan is much worse, and the EU will be worse than the UK also. If a recession is coming, tax cuts if the tax rate is high, which it is, will help. This inflation was supply driven, because governments had a one focus mind during Covid and decimated supply lines. Supply lines are starting to right themselves, but the interest rate policy in the US is based on data from 3-6 months ago. Price of fuel is up, due to NATO and the US poking the Russian bear and eliciting retaliation. Also, people in the US have fixed rate mortgages for 30 years, so interest rate rises don’t affect their mortgage repayments, so the rate rises aren’t as detrimental to individuals as in the UK and other countries.

She threw the chancellor under the bus for implementing her policies. And in all likelihood her party is going to throw her under the bus and then scrabble around to get someone else to sit in the hot seat.

Integrity is not any part of their policies. I really don't care for either. If they cannot support the members of their own party, then they've just given more insight into how they will be moving ahead and taking care of this country it's people....

He did his job and Liz is doing hers... and that's do the job badly. These two aren't Etonian elites so they've been positioned to take the fall leaving the Eton members relatively clean compared. She's a sacrifice but is trying to do a job she was never intended to do or capable of doing.
