Lyrics:
Living in a place with time
Living in a place where reality is
Standing on a big broad line
Watching it all go by
Ah but you're taking it all away
The music, the tongue and the old refrains
You're coming here to play
But you're pulling the roots from a dying age
Remember the Buachaille Mor
Reaching for the skies from the barren shores
Watching over the village of burns
And counting the days since the gael kept home
Well, the stranger claims it now
Sitting like a king with his gold from the south
Don't you see the waves of wealth
Washing away the soul from the land?
Here come the Clearances, my friend
Silently our history is coming to life again
We feel the breeze from the storm to come
And up and down this coast
We're waiting for the wheel to turn
Free were the fields of fern
Free was the fishing in the coves of care
Empty are the homes of old
Empty for the sake of summer's cause
Yes, you're taking it all away
The music, the tongue and the old refrains
You're coming here to play
But you're pulling the roots from a dying age
Here come the Clearances, my friend
Silently our history is coming to life again
We feel the breeze from the storm to come
And up and down this coast
We're waiting for the wheel to turn

Read Scottish history, the English cleared out the Scots, As the yanks did to the Indians. This song is a history lesson. A big one.

This is a different version to the track I have on my CD at home - having said that, it's still pretty AWESOME!

I dont exactly know where my CD is right now (I've moved twice since I last saw it) but I think you're right. I don't think this is not the version I recall.

Can anyone tell me what the old man is saying at the beginning?

Even after reading these lyrics, I'm not exactly sure what they mean. Is this song about the danger of selling out traditional Celtic music by capitalizing on and making a lot of money off of it?

No. I come back to this song because I was learning about the Highland Clearances as a child when the song came out. I was also spending a lot of time in rural Aberdeenshire and Wester Ross and between the ages of 6 - 11, I witnessed the decimation of communities and their way of life. Aged 8 I find Kinlochewe with a busy pub, in the cafe there I heard Gaelic spoken, five years later the hotelier is gone, a retiree from the south of England is in his place and the pub is empty, the community around it gone - only English accents. That was true of many places. You buy a second home and live a rich existence that does not feed into the community close by, you kill that community. Schools empty, village pubs and churches boarded up. In the early 90's it was happening.

@@jengale8739 So sorry to hear of such a great loss. Can ya find some peace knowing you were there to see it before it was gone. I can relate somewhat in the loss of my neighborhood at about the same age. Its sad.
