I had another cradle fail today. I was able to get two through it on this job but it wouldn’t do the other two cores I had to finish up. Could see a pin at the bottom of the cradle opening that wouldn’t retract to let the lock drop all the way in to where the other holes would line up. Think that pin was bent. I ordered another cradle, and I’m getting the better resetter tool as well. Other than the color, what’s the difference between the red and black cradles? I’m gonna tear mine down and see if I can salvage the part the 5 fingers are on and maybe use that to do a manual reset with. Thanks for sharing this. Later!

No difference I can tell other than my replacement black one started acting dumb right out of the box :/

@@selock well darn! Lol. My new one that I just received was black as well. All the same part # too but the tool used to depress the reset notch has a T handle which kinda gets in the way and hits the key bow if you use for normal Smartkey rekeying (old key st 3 o’clock) so I’ll stick with the old flat steel tool for anything outside of the cradle. I also bought a “better resetter” jic. I figured out with the old red cradle that somehow the timing was off, and that long spring on the bottom got wrapped around the wrong side of the spindle causing it to not line up and fail and damage that roll pin at the bottom (it wouldn’t let the plug drop all the way in).

Another fantastic video. They should make them with a metal shim over that part that’s too sharp with more of a chamfer I look forward to watching your next video

I've had two of these fail in three years and I don't even use it that much. Called kwikset both times and they just sent me a new one.

I just took mine apart and the metal ring slipped right off, it holds the black plastic body together which in turns holds the fingers and side bar parts inside. I think trying to reset a failed cylinder can break the reset cradle, my last one actually had bent the fingers when I tried to reset a cylinder.
@selock
@selock 6 жыл бұрын
Adamarchy77 I want to say on my last one I may have been trying a failed cylinder. If any of those fingers are solidly jammed I can easily see it bending or breaking the little prongs :) My metal ring wasn’t coming off for nothing but I guess thats good since it really didn’t need to come off. If I woulda forced mine and it broke/broke this video would have been a “What’s Inside????” Series 😂 so, is yours broke or are you just maintaining it since I brought it up ;)

SE Lock and Key I was curious as well, I’ve seen the better resetter and another reset tool supposedly made by kwikset that I haven’t been able to find for sale that just pushes the wafers in and holds the side bar while you turn the plug, our shop has been through about 3 cradles and I’ve been resetting the failed ones by hand to try and save from having to buy another one.

"poke your doodad in" lol. My boss hard one or two of the generic versions that were defunct. I can't remember if his Kwikset brand version was defunct or not. So many things in his shop was broken/malfunctioning that it's all a blur.

I never bothered getting a reset tool. I just carry a few good cores with me. I then reset them back in the shop by decoding them with depth keys and code cut a key to fit..

Don't use mine very often. Probably used it as much in 3 years as you do in a week. Nearly exclusively do commercial work. If I remember properly mine will return to the start position automatically. If something fell out maybe a piece of the plastic broke off ?

Do you need a better resetter tool? I'm ordering from a website that has the kwikset smartkey better resetter tool; I can either add it on my order and then ship it to you, or ask them if they could send it directly to you if I added it to my order if you want me to inquire. Figured I'd ask since I'm ordering stuff anyway

@@selock shit; I should be asking you then. There are some things I can't add to my collection as I'm not a licensed locksmith, and apparently giving my full name, address, all relavant legal information and even place of employment sometimes aren't enough to convince licensed distributors that I plan on acting responsibly with said equipment in my collection :p

Michael Galligano Jr. is it a really a better resetter or just a different resetter?
@lockmanmd8738

@@selock It's much better. A-1 makes it, and it's much more reliable. Very little can go wrong with just a comb looking tool. Use the teeth to depress the sliders, use the tip of a key blank to rotate the plug 90 degrees, stick a learn tool in, stick the new key in, turn it back and the lock is reset. Also, if you look at one of the side of the housing, you'll see a very tiny hole in the middle (lengthwise). Once you see the sidebar pop into that cavity, you have the key's removal position.

You can rekey those with a pick. No need to buy a specialty tool for it, especially when it’s unreliable.

Diener Christi to be fair, two years (ish) riding around in the truck with fairly steady use and no real cleaning or maintenance, given it’s mostly plastic I’d have to say it’s a decent tool considering it’s fairly inexpensive speed bonus

SE Lock and Key You can also repair failed cylinders where the key is stuck, won’t turn, comes out prematurely, etc.. Judging from what’s happening with the reset tool, using a pick would yield a higher success rate.

I'm not completely up to date so idk if that is still accurate, but it had a number of issues for quite a long time. One exploit simply required one to file/shave off the tiniest little nub from the thin end of their tool, and that allowed someone to alter the configuration of the smart Lock in a manner which allowed ANY smartkey to work on the lock afterwards. That was like 5 years ago though. Something tells me they may have improved the design slightly
@GottSegneDich

Cory Goodman This would have led to a class action lawsuit against kwikset. I think you misunderstood whatever was happening.

@@GottSegneDich my mistake; that was specifically the iloq electromechanical specifically. The smartkey vulnerabity involved a pair of vice grips, piece of key blank, and a screw driver; able to break the lock and unlock the door... But worse, they could turn it back to a locked position. It is destructive of course, as even the owner isn't getting in after. Defcon 18 talk by Mark Weber Tobias documents this. 20-22 minute mark is explaining why it works, followed by video demonstration. And a class action lawsuit was on the table. He thinks it takes way too long for these issues to be addressed. Iloq is the example right after smartkey. If you hear the companies immediate response, you would expect nothing less than a class action lawsuit. Luckily the higher ups arent that dumb and worked to correct it Mark Weber Tobias is an independent security researcher in regards to locks specifically. Companies use the standard ratings to say whether they are secure, and he thinks that the standards don't cover enough scenarios to consider them secure by following them.
