I find it distasteful that some Buddhists still revere a man who was an alcoholic, a drug user, a womaniser and a thoroughly reckless person. He crashed his sport car into a cafe because he was high on drugs! He gave dharma talks while drunk. I cannot see how such a person could be considered “enlightened”.

I think this would be true of so many of our teachers and gurus wouldn't you say? They are still human and subject to all aspects of samsara. And in that way are living examples of the Dharma not diminishing it.

Karmically, the actions of both produce very different results and lead to very different rebirths. So gurus being unenlightened in samsara isn’t an excuse for abuse
