I think regardless if you are Hmong pple or not, we all need emotional supports and love from our families. We have to support and help each other during our sad and happy times. If u don’t help and support and be there for ur families, you only get what you put out. Having money is not everything.

It's not just hmong people. It's the way of life, majority. If u don't show up for me and be there for me when i need u, what makes u think i will show up for u too? Everywhere u go, if u don't lend a helping hand, don't expect anyone to lend a helping hand too. Maybe a stranger will, but only once here and there. Not constant.

I do have a degree, and I am also a qeej player for Hmoob funeral and do Mej Koob when needed and everything under the sun involving Hmoob cultures. You need to understand it doesn't matter how educated or how highly you regarded your degree. It's not your degree and your education to determine who you are. It's your actions that will determine who you are. In this story, the couple let their actions determine their degree. This is why it happened the way it is. 80% of the time, your degree and money can work for you, but you still need the other 20% to lean on to someone. This is a very good example of it. Good luck to you both. May your ancestors answer your prayers.

Their leader is not fit to guide them. As a leader, one must have a big heart. They came back and asked for forgiveness yet he refused to help. He needs to step down and give up his title. It's different if they didn't ask for forgiveness but they went on their knees and he still refused? That's just too much. His heart is too small.

It's not the education. It's you both of you if you can't make it, you can always send some money to go help them and they are ok, but if your greedy and never give and help that's when they say no helping because when they cry you die you don't care about them you say your rich and got all the money and you will never need them. But in the end, you are hurting yourself and your little family by being greedy.

Honestly, if you crave/want “family,” you got to put effort into the relationships. You got to make an effort to attend and help their events and help with money. Even if you attend church, you still have to help your shaman family. I got a degree and never used it as a pedestal. Like my Ex MNL says about me. My mouth is fast but my hands are faster. That is how you earn respect. Even then it’s barely enough. If you don’t care about being included. You do you.

Some family will never see the stuff you do for them only the one time bad. Some are jealous of you and your spouse they make everyone around you think you are the bad one so they can only be the good ones. Family to do or die for me is my wife and kids. I learn that from my dad before he is going to pass away. He is a famous Hmong traditional leader in my community. But when he sick going to die no one cares to visit or stop by for a minute. 😢

As someone who doesn't have family from my mother's side or my father's side, it's hard to understand all this. My siblings and I have always done everything on our own. Oh man, this couple's son is such a whiny ungrateful boy. Does he not realize that this girl doesn't care about him? She cheated and use this as an excuse to not be with him. When she marries that white guy, his family ain't coming to pay their respects. I hate it when parents think their daughters are all that and a bag of chips because they had higher education. People need to stay humble. Just like this couple. Stay humble.

I really hate that too! Just bc your daughter has a degree, whether bachelor's or masters or PhD, does that make her woman part any more special or exciting that you should use her degree as a weapon or leveraging tool? I understand family fight but when a family cannot move pass forgiving each other, it will turn into a curse and that curse will recycle itself from one generation to the next. Just watch- the kids will see and follow these kind of bad examples. And they will fight each other too and become loveless. When I was young, I never understood my father- why he's so patient and tolerant. As I got older, I began to see my father differently. He really is a great exemplifying role model. Not only was he able to hold his family together but an entire clan including winning the respect of outsiders. Even when my siblings and I fight, we still remember to follow our father's footsteps. At the end, family is still family.

Hmong people are complicated. My husband and I we are in the same boat. My husband loves his family. He just don't really understand the hmong culture, but he goes and attends weddings and funerals. But I noticed that if you are not into hmong politics they don't respect you. You are there to help kill pigs and etc. But they prefer the guys that wear ties. It's sad that you see your husband works so hard, but at the end, they appreciate the guys who comes and drink. They don't even invite your husband to sit at the table just because he doesn't really understand the hmong culture or into politics. But he is there to help kill pigs and cows. That's why some hmong people don't respect the leaders. They don't even respect the people who are there to help them.

Alot of times, orphans such as me and my siblings, my brothers have to kiss ass and attend all events incase of situations like this. In the end they still don’t want to help but as long as you have the money, it will. This is so sad but it’s the way of hmong life. He probably have never thought that even if she married him, she has a lover (White doctor with big p enis) who she likes so much more so she will cheat on him, then divorce him when he finds out, then make him pay child support. Hmoob phem rau hmoob xwm os. Even for those who slave for their family, relatives and the community all the time, when times in needs for help and supports, there will still many relatives who will use excuses to not return the favor and come support you. Majority of hmoob sib sib khim and siab me me. And for the son- you shouldnt be mad at your parents, if your gf really loves you, you both are grown adults, she would still marry you and not run back to her meeka ex.

Wow... This story really opens my eyes. Thank you to this mom for sharing your story. I think there is no right or wrong way how you choose to live your life, the Hmong way or another way as long as it is important to you. However, if you are Hmong and you choose to abandon a life without NOT ONLY the Hmong way but also your very own family then you have to make sure you are immune to life's challenges. It can come back and bite you in the ass and it's going to hurt like hell.

Good lesson! Txhob tsa7 meej mom, tsa fwj chim, saib yus tus kheej muaj nqis tshaj lwm tus. Work, life, personal, and community service balance! A high degree does not determine your output. It's your actions that result in the consequences. Please don't blame the degree, it's the people to blame.

Now a days it doesn't matter how much you love or don't love your family. If they don't want to help they will find every excuse in the book to not help. I am one of the nyab who my in law don't like, so they choose not to love my husband too. My in laws they do events and never invite us. We find out when pictures are posted or from other family memebers. So sometime its ok to just stick with your immediate family. All I know is that I don't owe anyone anything anymore because I have helped in every way that I can already. Some Hmong family just like to make things complicated.

We will see a lot like this will happen more because we have too many brothers and sisters who think they are way too smart or too good that they over look the need of our Hmong culture and Hmong elders, and will end up exactly like this couple. No matter how smart, good, educated, or whatever you call yourself, remember you are still Hmong, and you will fall back onto your roots at the end. Love and respect your culture.

A lesson for all. The saying goes it takes a village to raise a child - for Hmong it takes a village to bury a loved one. Make sure you learn to reciprocate because one day you’ll need others help. Family is important. Live, learn and forgive.
@MonaLisa-de4cp

It doesn't need a village to bury someone. Hmong people just love to make things extra hard and complicated. This whole family just proved it, whether it's getting married, burying a loved one, and being sick. People just need to have compassion and not be the ones in this story that, even blood siblings, have tit for tat mentality...if you don't do something for me, I won't do something for you. I hate that way of thinking!

There's always a reason to strained relationships. When it comes to hard work and labor, family remembers us. But investments and making a profit, they make sure to keep it a secret but sharing it with other siblings. And we only need them, they don't need us. What a cruel story!
