My sister was looking for a new laptop for college (she graduated in 2024) and told me her budget was around $700. I told her that was overkill for her needs, but then she mentioned she wanted to play games on it as well. I don’t remember her first pick exactly, but it wasn't the worst. It had an i5-1235U with Intel Iris Xe, 12GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and a 1080p display. It cost around low $400s on sale. For casual browsing, that laptop wouldn't be bad, but for gaming, it would only meet the bare minimum and wouldn't be too enjoyable. I advised her to aim higher and get a laptop with a dGPU. We found an HP Victus at Best Buy on sale. It has an i5-12450H, an RTX 3050 4GB GPU, and 16GB of RAM. It performs far better than the initial laptop (though the iGPU is Intel UHD, which doesn’t matter much here). It cost around $655 with sales tax and is complete overkill for her needs, but she uses it decently. She plays rhythm games with that Vocaloid stuff on Steam, and it has the added benefit of a 144Hz display over the 60Hz the first laptop had. However, desktops at most price points typically come with a dedicated GPU (if you specifically try to find one with), including low-end prebuilts. For example, there was a Dell prebuilt I saw with an i7-7700, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, and a 256GB M.2 SSD being sold for $300. The specs seem ok for the price until you realize the dGPU is an R7 450, which is a poor choice for gaming and a meme if you intended to buy it for that purpose. I tested this out myself for fun with an old AMD GPU I got for around $25 (I think it was the RX 460). It was better than nothing, as I was able to utilize my monitor’s 144Hz refresh rate and AMD FreeSync. However, it severely degraded the performance of my games when paired with my i5-8600K. The GPU was always at 100% utilization while my CPU was at around half. For context, my main GPU is a GTX 1060 3GB. So, just have the right idea for what is matched well with performance and what its intended utilization is for.

Well I was mostly talking about desktops as laptops with GPUs are uncommon and are only present in medium to high end models which cannot be custom built without the knowledge or tools which even if you knew how to build a PC wouldn't be applicable for a laptop. Like for example, a build a saw with an i7-7700 paired with an R7 450 at 300 bucks, doesn't sound bad until you realize that GPU is legit only the minimum to ensure good browsing not really for gaming, making it junk as a gaming desktop. In my case, my sibling owns a laptop with this same CPU in the video the i5 12450H but it's paired with an RTX 3050 4GB (16GB of ram as-well) and its easily able to get 144 fps on fortnite with high settings. But I turn that off and it gets similar preformance to this. Point being, gpu and cpu have to be both good and you'd have to look out for desktops with these bad setup rather than laptops.
