Electrofishing a Huge School of Asian Carp Below Barkley Dam

Check out this huge school of asian carp that KDFWR shocked up while electrofishing below Barkley Dam. Seeing this many carp together is actually a very common occurrence. This was shot during a media day to highlight the BAFF system that is currently being installed in the Barkley lock.

I've seen and tasted Asian carp(fried). It tastes pretty good. I suggest they put no limit derbies into play for Asian carp. I'm sure kids would love catching those huge fish and the proceeds can go to charities or whatever organization manages the river/lake/native fish.

the problem is they dont bite baits. they are filter feeders. so the way most catch them from boat is snag with a treble hook. and thats why they are such a problem. fishing doesnt catch them.

@@png_in_usa They actually won't eat bait, in this video are mostly (Silver Carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) they are filter feeders and despite what people say they don't bite lures either. People snag them in their mouths due to the size of the mouth. Simply put they are not biologically designed to eat bread, corn, minnows or worms. They eat phytoplankton, and don't even have a true stomach meaning they can't digest anything else. This is why they are so hard to control.

@@mihaiilie8808 Asian carp cause serious damage to the native fish populations in the lakes and rivers that they infest because they out-compete other fish for food and space. I suppose a bit like Japanese Knotweed in the UK. I remember as a kid making tunnels through the stuff. We had amazing fun. However the stuff really did thrive in local woodlands and didn't give much of a chance for anything else to grow. It occupied large areas with a canopy about 6 foot high so nothing else was getting sunlight other than trees that breached it. It used to spread its seed fast and take over large areas quickly. An area of knotweed would almost double next year round. I actually miss seeing the stuff as its since been completely eradicated from the area for around 10 years. Anyway I don't like any kind of meddling with nature so i stay out of it. But I do understand the repercussions it has on local wildlife and fauna. I let the experts deal with it.

Yes they are doing a good job “trying” to fix the lake but they should have done something along time ago when us anglers said it was a problem. Now more time, money and resources will be put to use for at least 10-20 years before we see a major difference not a little one.

If you keep aggressively hunting them and eat them all then these guys can just be a huge blessing to hungry people.

You could. Most states have a program where you get paid to get rid of invasive species. If you do on a large scale you could make up to 200k a year.

Should've started doing that a long time ago. Those things are so invasive and such an issue they may be an act of bioterrorism by the Chinese.

In Illinois we are told not to return them to the water, you can find plenty of dead ones tossed on the bank, I have noticed that they don't seem to smell bad as they rot. Snagging them can work great.
