ℹ️ About the Episode: Getting ready to hit the road is fun-at least, for us. We enjoy the process of deciding what to bring and what to leave behind based on our route and planned activities. It seems that we bring fewer things each year. Like anything, simplicity is appreciated more with experience.
We also enjoy being forced to "reset" our lives by turning our home into a vacation rental AKA the KYD Cabin. It's so much work, but by the time we're finished each year, we're grateful that we were forced to make tough decisions about what stays in the cabin, what goes into the shed, and what goes to Goodwill. That process would not happen without this lifestyle. We have a big route planned for this year! We'll cross the country at least twice. First, we'll head east with the new Airstream and spend a bit of time in Florida when Caleb gets out of school. Then it's back to the west for more family events, plus some epic adventures along the coast.

watching Charlie hesitate on jumping into the back seat was kinda spooky. he's a bigger dog and not young. my girl blew out her right rear knee and it broke my heart let alone it was a surgery that cost almost 3k. it might be a good time to think about some steps for him to get into the truck. make it as easy as you can.

Did you see his nose when he looked down, lol The dog is a character too. To think I was going to miss Kaleb, 🤣. Great shake down. We are taking off in July; Oak Harbor, WA to Cleveland, Clarksburg, WVa and then maybe Bolivia, NC. Gotta visit fam and friends. Not sure about making hard reservations because we want to be flexible on our drive times based so we can stay longer in a nice area or just sleep in lol. We have a dog too, George eats at 0600 each day. Reminds us around 0525 that it is almost time for breakfast.

To help with keeping food in the fridge even after you fix the door, I installed spring tension rods across each shelf. Two on larger shelf. That way even if the door opens, it will keep things on the shelf. They are like $10 on Amazon. 12-28”.

You guys really should consider a ramp for Charlie. I would bet $$ that he doesn't like jumping all the way in and out - hard on the joints. We got our big dog a ramp for each high vehicle years ago, and it's so much better for her! ❤

Suggestion, BTW I love your content, as my 60lb Labradoodle aged it became more difficult for him to jump into my 2500HD truck. I bought a ramp off Amazon to assist him getting into our backseat. He learned quickly how to use it even to the point were he sat patiently waiting for me to get it out. It made our lives a little better. Just a thought to help Charlie out. Happy and safe travels.

Mark: we have a 30’ classic. Two help ideas that work well. The fridge did the same thing as yours. If you push up on the door (as you know), it locks in perfectly. I talked to the dealer in FL about it and they weren’t exactly good about it, but simply said to lift up and listen for the lock. It works. Hitch: I keep a little pressure on the hitch release lever and lift up the truck and trailer until it releases (opens up). Then I can lower about an inch which allows the truck to rock a little (in park, not emergency brake), and it releases. Lastly: your sway bars are putting too much tension in transferring the weight to the front of the truck. Is the trailer receiver 4:56 ball 19 1/2 inches from the ground? The owners manual will tell you the actual height it should be in the trailer side. Finally, I bought the weigh safe hitch which gives an actual tongue weight every time. Their app on your phone has a calculation as to how much weight you dial in for transfer. It’s perfect. I noticed you had everything in the front of the trailer when you left AZ. That probably added too much weight on your tongue weight and ergo, the battery cover issue. Hope this has been helpful.

Last Summer I towed 3000lb camper to the tip top of Beech Mtn. N.C. My rear wheel drive truck , on the paved road, was handling trailer weight and grade fine as far as power went. But when I got to our friends gravel driveway, same steep grade, I had no traction. I vexed for two days while we stayed with them about how I would get out of there. Dropped the WD bars and watched the back end of the pickup sink. It worked and I came away with a better understanding of what those bars did and realized that on the way up, even on the paved roads, I had been losing traction.

I've learned that you should always carry a couple of command strip hooks. anything that won't stay open you can put the command strips on and wrap some para cord around them while you travel too keep things closed. Nice thing is they come off with no damage when you finally fix it. you just put them away and have some refill strips for the next time.

For adjusting tire pressures - I love the Dewalt 20v tire inflator I picked up last fall. It uses the same batteries as my drill-driver, flashlight, and other tools I carry on RV trips, and the kickers - 1.) can inflate our class-A diesel-pusher tires (about 110 psi); and 2.) dial-the-pressure you need (higher or lower) and it takes over. The nozzle threads onto the tire stem so it's hands-free. I recently had to adjust all 4 on my toad, and I just let it do it's thing while I packed up the wet bay / starlink /etc., and whenever I heard it stop, I moved it to the next tire. Highly recommended.

Get up first thing in the morning and test the faucets. That's a happy tear that runs down your cheek when it comes on!! And the 'Name What The Fridge Has Thrown On The Floor' game was priceless!! ProTip on the coupler on that Airstream. Flip the black release handle down BEFORE dropping it on the ball of the truck. You will see it rise, then positively “snap” into place when it locks. If it does not snap back down, put the truck in gear and give it a quick “forward tug” and it will click. I’ve had that typed of coupler on my Featherlite race car trailer for more than a decade and like how easy it is.

While I get plenty of snow and ice on deck, my solution is a couple of oil filled heaters turned down low and a dehumidifier. I wouldn't run a diesel heater unattended for so long, but the electric heaters are great.

The metal plate on the bottom of the fridge that supports the hinge pin is held on by two screws and the rubber/plastic foot. The installer removed the foot for vertical clearance which allows the metal plate to sag. I pulled the fridge out and installed a screw where the foot should have been and the door stays closed.

It hangs in HER South Lake cabin she and my dad bought in the 90’s. All three places are still (very modest) old Tahoe family cabins. Fingers crossed they stay that way.

We use 2” black “gaffer” tape when traveling. We started using it in Alaska last summer as a precaution. The tape is strong and leaves no residue!

Put some sort of spreader bar from the fridge door to the cabinet across from the fridge to keep the door closed

Check out the check valve on the water pump if you can’t find a leak. Might be leaking by internally and losing pressure which will keep it pumping back up every so often.

I’m glad we aren’t the only ones that do tape in the fridge. We use gaffers tape to hold the fridge door shut. It’s less gooey. 😂

I’d be sorta uncomfortable pulling with out distribution but not having any sway control would really makes me nervous. Looking forward to what you figure out. One wouldn’t think airstream would possibly have “frame flex” issues

Love the video, you guy's are killing me! LOL. My wife and I are Snow-Birds and just completed a 6 month, 150000km winter journey. Just missed you in Elkpoint I guess as we changed plans and went to Topeka KOA instead. Safe Travels!

We had a similar Fridge door problem. We solved it by installing a "Child proof plastic latch" Un locks easily and re connects just as easy

Wow! Airstream quality does not live up to the price tag apparently. Just run long bolts through the door to the back of the fridge, or better yet, put the nuts and large washers on the outside wall of the trailer. That should keep it closed.

Makes us want to travel! Safe travels. Was in Arizona in March with the snow. Came home to MN and snow. This weekend to be around 60 degrees. Hopefully, our campground will open in a few weeks and possibly travel in June. Going to spend May to June at the campground to spend time fishing and family time with the family ( son, daughter in law and three grandchildren with youngest going to be about 2 months old). We got 2-4 years before retirement. Hopefully be in Seligman AZ Jan- April.

There are under $10 childproof latches for fridge snd freezer doors. We put one on the freezer becsuse it just doesn't always latch tight. Easy way to solve that problem. There are also more expensive supermagnets (all on Amazon) that can hold doors closed VERY firmly.
