This video is an excerpt of my longer, in-depth look at this scope, called
"JYE Tech DSO Shell Kit: A Low Cost Digital Storage Oscilloscope".
Here, I include the video "User Manual" portion of the longer video. It is essentially a narrated version of the 'enhanced user's manual' that I wrote for this scope. A PDF of the text version of the manual can be downloaded using a link shown in the video.

Thank you for the video. I'm a novice in electronics but always wanted a o scope. When I installed a car audio amplifier I finally had a reason to justify the purchase. When the scope arrived I realized how over my head I was. Well KZbin to the rescue and down the rabbit hole. Thank you for the education.

Hey - just wanted to say thanks for this! I've owned many scopes over the years including a couple digital storage scopes - this one had me slightly baffled, and the almost non-existent manual didn't help much. Your video really helped me figure out the navigation! Wish I could make a little donation for your trouble - saved me a bunch of time.

I've just started using 'scopes at work (Tektronix) and bought one of these units to use at home. The "user guide" is very poor so your video is a godsend. I would never have spotted that the colours indicate what mode it's in. Thanks for your great work explaining this device.

Great explanation! I think it covers everything there is to this cute little oscillocope. A couple remarks on the parts that were not working as expected: 38:20: Storing a measurement is done by [ADJ] + [SEC/DIV], recalling a saved measurement is done by [ADJ] + [TRIGGER]. This is still a limited feature, but I'm sure you'll get it to work. You tried the [ADJ] + [V/DIV] combination, this sends the data over the internal serial port. You can open the device up and hook the internal serial port via a USB module to your PC and read out the measurements for further processing in Python or Excel or what have you. Since this requires a hardware mod and quite some tinkering, I think this is a niche feature. 40:24: You mention the firmware version, and hope for newer versions. As per 55:50 you are on 120 which is at the moment of writing the most up-to-date version. 56:40: The trigger mode is still on normal, rather than auto. The trigger is set to 0.2 V, but the signal is a mere 0.1 V. So the scope is never triggered, leaving the display empty. Setting the mode to auto (as you recommended it earlier in the video) would keep this signal visible, albeit jittering. This may not explain all the weird behaviour. But a buggy trigger-mechanism is easier to work with in auto-mode. Hope that helps! Good luck to you and anyone else playing with this device!

Great reply/info, how do you update this unit? I’ll have to check what version mine is (I just bought the supossedly “updated” black 20v/200KHz version, Etepon EM001 I think? Really digging mine so far 🖖🏼

Trying to explain electronic engineering to a complete novice I can only imagine is complicated, as it's a complicated subject to someone new. Mention Oscilloscope to a newbie, and they will think you have two heads. I had to comment on this video as you managed to break down A) how to read AC/DC waves using an Oscilloscope, and B) actually how to use the basic functioning of said instrument, in a very easy to understand way. No easy task Sir. Thank you so much for doing this video. I am waiting for my DSO150 Kit from China to arrive, and now am really looking forward to building and using it. Especially now you have explained the functioning so well. I bought the non SMB soldered version. I felt like a challenge lol 😁👍

Thanks for this. I was thinking mine was not working, having just built it, but it is just as twitchy as yours. I couldn't do the adjustments on the trimmers, to square it up, but it seems the sig gen does work sometimes. Thanks again for your in depth video.

Actually when I'm tracing a preamp or amp, etc for an audio signal, I always use AC input. Don't need DC. Good job on this video.

The auto trigger will be in rolling mode if timebase setting is greater than 20ms. For instance, if timebase is set for 50ms while measuring a squarewave of 10Hz, you'd want to use "NORM" trigger. SAVE WAVEFORM - Press [ADJ[ & [SEC/DIV] buttons simultaneously for about 3 sec. RECALL WAVEFORM - Press [ADJ & [TRIGGER] buttons simultaneously for about 3 sec.

Thank you. Your video was very informative. The last of the "New": The "X1" adjustment. Highlight the "10uS - 500S", then toggle with the "ADJ". It will toggle "X1" or "X10" only. I assume that is to match the setting of the probe (not included).

How weird, I have the same device and everything works exactly the same except for mine doesn't show the 0.00V down at the bottom right. I can still adjust the blue arrow, but it doesn't show me the trigger voltage. Mine is branded AUKUYEE.

In both videos, you say that you can store a trace on the scope by simultaneously pressing the Sec/Div & Adj buttons, but you actually press the V/Div & Adj buttons and obviously it does not work. Pressing the Trigger & Adj buttons allows viewing of the captured trace. When I press the correct sequence of buttons to capture and view, it ALWAYS works. I have FW v110.

Yah, maybe I goofed with the button presses. Sometimes my fingers press wrong keys when I am half looking at them and half looking through the camera viewfinder.

Adquiri uma osciloscópio desse a uns três dias, agora tenho que adquirir como trabalhar com o mesmo, porém, todos os vídeos estão em inglês, o que é uma pena, não sei inglês, assim como eu somos vários, poderiam me indicar um em português, afinal estamos no Brasil. Grato. Esse vídeo parecer ser bem explicadinho, com excelente imagem e som, Se há alguém lendo essa minha necessidade, pode traduzir, tenho certeza que nos todos brasileiros afinal merecemos. Por muitas vezes tentei aprender esse idioma, hoje estou com 70 anos, minha cabeça não ajuda mais.

So as I was measuring a transformer output it stoped responding, I’ve no idea why, how to reset it to factory settings?

I have the older version that doesn't show the trigger voltage. Didn't watch the hour-long video, but did you ever try triggering on a one-shot waveform, like a switch closing? It seems to STOP recording once the trigger occurs, rather than start (or center the triggered event in the waveform buffer). Makes it pretty useless for looking at triggered events.

I have a KYE DSO150 bought in dec 2017, but the software seems to be an older version. The automatic set functions when holding V/DIV SEC/DIV or TRIGGER don't work for instance. Also, the trigger point in volts is not displayed in the bottom right corner of the screen. Is there a way to upgrade the software, maybe by flashing using a Serial FTDI cable? [UPDATE] I don't think I have a genuine FYE device, after watching a video on how to update the firmware of a DSO150... The boot screen of my device looks quiet different, and the firmware version is an ancient v062. The risk is that I brick the device if I try to update the firmware on this not genuine one.. So I'll use it as it is now.

Superb tutorial, the scope is great for the hobby audio work at a cost of 15 quid, I don't have a way to test at 200Khz, how good was the written display of values please ? will they display the actual values at the 'front end' maybe this is how the makers justify the specs as it 'can' measure 200Khz but not display the waveform much above 20Khz ?...cheers.

This scope is inferior to any inexpensive DMM, and that is what you should be using to take measurements (a DMM will also measure current and resistance, and DC and at higher voltages than this scope). I would discount the numerical displays on this scope, and only count on it for its primary purpose, the display of waveforms. And those are only reliable to something a bit north of 20kHz.

@@youtuuba exactly, I was curious to see what the device read, there is no substitute for a good meter, I guess I was trying to throw the designers a life line, after all they are a long way out of spec, I bought this more as a sunday afternoon soldering and assembly project to be honest and would probably recommend it as such to someone starting out. I'm still curious so I need to fix my function generator !...cheers.

@@andymouse , I don't think the designers of this little DSO are 'out of spec', rather I think they provided an inapplicable spec. The analog front end circuit is certainly good for 200kHz, and their 200kHz spec is for the analog section (analog bandwidth). The limitation is with the digital part of the circuit, for which the designers provided no specification.

I wish you had discussed the 'AC.DC.GND' setting (with practical examples) in as much detail as you dedicated to the other functions. 52:25 -- How about a video demonstrating practical analyses of audio frequency ranges.

Lothian Macadam, as I said in the video, this is intended to be a user manual for the scope, NOT a tutorial on how to use oscilloscopes in general. If you don't already understand what the AC/DC/GND switch is for, this video is not for you.

Some of DSO150 have a trigger voltage dispay at the right down corner. My instrument don't have. How to fix that?

Would this be sensitive enough to test for the outside foil on capacitors? Would be handy if something this small is capable of that.

Yes, you should be able to it with this scope in the lowest setting AC coupled.

@@vancouverman4313 Thanks, May have to order one to try. Wasn't sure if something else would cause it to not work like shielded ground reference. I don't own a scope and a hobbiest at best. I have scoured youtube to see if someone tried this but no one has even mentioned it that I could find. A lot of people would buy 0ne just for that purpose I would think.

@@lmt200ish I tried testing a small plastic capacitor on my scope and I was able to identify the outer shield very easily. I put the leads across the capacitor while holding the capacitor in between my fingers. I put the scope on the lowest voltage range which is 5 millivolts per division. I set the x axis (timing) at 20 mS per division so I could see a sine wave. Connected, you will see a much bigger sine wave one way than the other. When the sine wave is the lowest you will note the terminal of the capacitor that the negative scope probe is connected to is the shield side.

@@lmt200ish One thing I'll add. It seems to work on film capacitors best. Also known as mylar or plastic capacitors. They're the most common used in coupling and bypass in amplifiers.

Well, like others, thanks for this @youtuuba. This crazy little thing is way more feature packed than I thought! The instructions are a joke, being one page and one sided! A question tho - if you happen to read this... Could look at 110VAC waveform with this thing, of will I end up with a piece of toast? It seems speed wise a "no!" To me. Ok, maybe two questions... At the last you show test mode. What is the purpose of this mode?

Karl Gingerich, if you take a look at the written user's manual I prepared, downloadable here: www.serpentwebsite.com/fileshare.htm you will see that the maximum input voltage is 100V between peaks; NOT 100V RMS, which is what a typical voltmeter would show.........multiply the RMS voltage of 110VAC cited in your question by 1.4 to get the approximate 154V peak. Normal North American voltage is closer to 120V, so that would result in an even worse approximate 170V peak. So, trying to use this scope to measure line voltage will result in the internal circuits seeing almost 150% of their maximum rating. So almost certainly this 'scope would be catastrophically ruined. This 'scope is intended solely for low voltage, low frequency basic electronics work. The 'test mode' is to make the 'scope generate a square wave output at either of two voltage levels. This serves two purposes; first, it allows adjustment of the 'scope's 'front end' circuit capacitance to give the cleanest, most accurate waveform at higher frequencies, especially waveforms closer to have vertical rise and fall times, and second, it provides an easy way to demonstrate the scope, without having any signal generator equipment or other signal source nearby, and/or as a quick test to verify that the 'scope is working.

I'm trying to use this scope to set the gain on my amplifier. When I play a 40Hz test tone through the head unit and hook up my DMM to it the amp speaker terminals I measure 88.8 VAC. I'm not sure what you meant by the 50V vs 100V peak to peak ... can I connect this safely to my amp if it's at 88.8 VAC as long as I don't go to 100 VAC, will it burn up, etc.?

bugsysiegals, I mentioned the scope's input voltage limit because it is not clear in the specifications whether 50V is peak-to-peak, or average, etc. I don't know the answer. A full-featured scope could be used as you want, but this little scope is greatly limited in this regard. I suggest using a regular scope for 'real' electronics work, and leave this scope to the more limited educational applications it seems to be intended for.

I’d considered $100 on a DMM style scope but all reviews seem to suggest everything is a joke and that I’d need to spend $350 before I get a decent scope?

@@bugsysiegals , if you can afford to do so, get a 'real' scope as soon as you can manage. $350-ish can get you a very nice, full featured analog scope. There are a lot of companies online selling nice, reconditioned, warrantied analog scopes. The DSO scopes are nice enough, but not as easy to use as a typical analog model.

​@@youtuubaI'm on a tight budget but found out a pair of 10x P6100 probes will allow me to measure the ~100VAC without burning up the scope. Thankfully they were only $12 so at least this wasn't a total loss.

I bought a Quimat Updated 2.4" TFT fully assembled through Amazon. Being unfamiliar with oscilloscopes, I was depending on You-tube for instruction. My unit is different: The Top Line: 0 Calib; PWM 0.01.00Khz(adjustable, but I can't figure-out how); Duty 0 - 100%; Symbol for Rising or Falling Trigger; Auto | Normal | Single. The Bottom Line: 50mV - 200V; X1; 10uS - 500S; Gnd | DC | AC; RUN | STOP. I cannot find a You-tube on this unit with these different features.

Glenn Larson, not sure what your point is. Are you trying to alert others about lack of KZbin support for your Quimat scope? Are you asking others to figure out how to use the Quimat scope and them make a video so you can learn how to use it? I made thus video after many hours of research, experimentation and circuit study. I don't plan to repeat that effort for any other kind if scope. Perhaps, having bought a Quimat scope, you can he the pioneer and figure out how to use the thing and then share that knowledge with others in a new video.

@@youtuuba he You-tube videos were very helpful, but when I got the unit, I discovered unknown features. I have minimal knowledge of oscilloscopes and I am having trouble using the features . The unit is new and the picture and spec in the Amazon page were of a scope like in the You tube videos. Because of the You tube videos, I am able to use the DSO. I don't understand the "Duty", but I can change to any percent between 0 - 100%. I have the unit set at 50%. I accidentally got to set the PWM to 1khz, but I don't remember how I did it. The PWM and the Duty are where the slide is on the You tube video. At the far left top 0 Calib is when I hold the V/Div button down. Instead of hold my unit uses RUN and STOP. I made the comment asking for help. Glenn

@@glennlarson9257 , the Amazon listing shows only the scope, nearly identical to what I showed in my video. Their photos and text do not describe anything different. But you describe "Duty" and such, as if they were settings. On my scope, "Duty" only appears on the statistics screen to indicate the Duty Cycle of the measured waveform......this is not a setting that you should be able to change. In short, you seem very comfortable confused, probably because you got yourself a new toy that you (by your own admission) don't understand anything about. There is no way people on KZbin are going to see what you are seeing in order to troubleshoot, explain festures, and educate you about all the fine points of what all the features of a scope are for and how to use them. I suggest taking an online course in how to use an oscilloscope, but that won't help much unless you have adequate knowledge of electronics. Try a community College near you (assuming that you are old enough to be admitted), and take some basic electronics and test equipment courses.

@@youtuuba I found the same unit at Amazon , but it is Black. Mine is White. It is listed as ETEPON Digital Oscilloscope. It also shows a comparison of the old and the new. Full color screen pictures. I'm 70 years old.

Thank you. I did some research and experimenting, and I discovered that if I Highlighted Duty with the SEC/DIV button, I could toggle to PWM by pushing the ADJ button. My quest to adjust the PWM frequency is solved.

@@TJsVette, there is no such thing as "going into it" with triggering. Triggering happens on a scan by scan basis. As for getting it "set up for Amp and subs" that makes no sense to me.

@@youtuuba so I watched a video that showed someone using this to set their gain for their Amp to power their subs without getting any clipping. You set the scope up a certain way and it would never leave off the hold setting. Maybe I need to go back and try again or maybe I just don't understand how to fully use it. I'm not the greatest with stuff like this, I can wire up a sound system, I can wire up cameras and other types of electronics but this I just don't understand lol.

Pavel Pavlovic, the version I have does not have a signal generator (except the very limited one for the test signal); that is very clear from its schematic. This scope has only one other connector, a BNC type for the input signal. For this to be used as an output, the circuitry would need to be very different from the one shown in this video. Are you sure you are looking at specifications for THIS scope, not some other small scope?

@@youtuuba yeah it is the same scope , i figured it out but its MK2 , looks the same , identical but its WAWE2 You get 2 channel scope , and 2 channel signal generator .200Khz range , and 20khz for signal generator up to 3V i think . This is fantastic for audio work . Absolutely fantastic , I used to do audio work on old Analog scope 50Mhz big huge thing with no signal generator , it was a pain to use it , i dont need 50mhz what i need is small useful device I hear its designed in Canada , wonderful work , you can design High End audio with this no joke . Unless you work with Tube amps , and im not any more ,

@@dedskin1 , if the scope you are talking about is TWO channel, then it is certainly NOT the same scope that I describe in this video. It is a very different scope that resembles the one I describe. Don't be fooled by some similarity in appearance.....the case must be different (if only to accommodate connectors for both channels), and the circuit boards will be very different. If you take George Washington's axe, and replace the handle and the blade, it can no longer be called George Washington's axe, no matter how similar it might appear.

Anyway maybe you can try that one , i trust scope is the same its just has 2 channels and a function generator .Also has XY mode . Its also a kit , you can make it But if you have a scope and you dont need any , then well you dont need it

@@youtuuba Because it says "Kuman" on the bottom right of the front cover instead of "JYE Tech" like it's supposed to. I bought mine directly from JYE Tech. and after I got it. I went ahead and opened it up to get the unique code from the circuit board and sent number over to JYE via e-mail for him to confirm it was authentic, which it was. I bought it directly from him, but thought I'd try that out anyways. JYE Tech gives instructions on how to spot fakes. And like I said, if you open it up, there should be a unique code in there that you can email to JYE to see if you have an authentic or real one. If you don't see the code, then it's for sure a fake. The code are black numbers on a little white sticker on the board. Follow the instructions on JYETech's website to verify authenticity: jyetech.com/Products/LcdScope/e138.php Open yours up and see if you can fine the code, and then if you do find one, then send it off to JYETech to verify. If you see no code, then it's guaranteed to be fake. Let me know what you find out. Here's a link to where I bought mine from that is where JYETech's website sends you. It get's shipped out directly from JYETech. But look at the front cover and see how it looks different than your front cover. @@colt5189 , why would I even do that? The JYE itself is reportedly a "knockoff" of an open source design. I did not care whose knockoff of another knockoff I might be buying, as long as it worked. And with JYE Tech having a virus intrusive website, I was hardly encouraged to communicate with them anyway.

Much better than your last video, but you are still blaming the scope for errors in operation that YOU made! I know you are trying hard to be the best 'how to' video available on KZbin, and you may already be at that point;...but I know that you can be even better! Watch more of other peoples videos, learn more about the scope, and try again... Learn what 'aliasing' means, and how it can be used to get a digital scope to measure signals that are much higher than it's bandwidth limitations. Learn how to properly use the trigger. Learn what you can change and what you cannot change when you have the scope on HOLD. Show how you can use the scope to automatically make all those measurements you were using your calculator to make. Learn that the scope needs more than one or two 'zero crossings' of the waveform to accurately calculate a frequency, and why. If an expensive scope advertises that it is 100 or 200 Mhz, that is the frequency at which the vertical display drops by 3 DB. You cannot expect a scope with a 3 db frequency of only 200 khz to have full vertical gain at 200 khz. The vertical gain decay of any scope is usually about 3 db per octave., which means that you can expect full vertical response to 100 khz, and less vertical response at 200 khz. . That scope DOES HAVE SOME WEAKNESSES AT 200 KHZ, they are the length of time it takes the trigger circuit transistor to recover from the last trigger and be ready for the next trigger, and variations in the time required for the scope to store it's previous measurement data and be ready for the next trigger. . I also own Tektronix test equipment and many different brands of 1GHz per second sampling scopes. I also own the OWAN 200 Mhz portable and a few oF the Hantek 40 and 70 Mhz scope meters. That being said, I use those little DSO scopes for 80 to 90 % of the measurements I make that are less than 50 VDC and less than 100 Khz.. I love the fact that they are portable and easily battery powered so I never have to worry about things called 'ground loops' that can kill laptop computers and other test equipment. As an Retired Bell Labs engineer, I have a great respect for what the designers of that scope accomplished for such a low price, and would recommend it to everyone as a beginners scope or a toolbox scope, and for us old guys who don't want to drag out a large piece of test equipment every time. . Since they are almost the same size as those 'SUCRETTES LOZENGES' metal containers, I put an 18650 battery and a charger boost regulator combo board into that case and mount it to the back of that scope. I set the boost regulator to about 7 or 8 volts (anything higher than that for that scope is actually wasted power), and the scope can be left turned on continuously for a few weeks before the battery needs recharging, and it can run for a year under normal intermittent bench top use...

Dennis#12, I appreciate constructive criticism, but I appreciate it more when it comes from somebody who can understand the goal and limitations of an instructional video, which you apparently do not, and from somebody who can articulate their thoughts clearly and allowing that their audience is not comprised of mindreaders, which you have not done. You started out by saying that this video was "better than my last one", which was........? You assume that because I made a video aimed at beginners that I myself am an oscilloscpoe neophyte, which I am not....I have been using high end professional scopes during my entire career in electronics design, and although I would not call myself an expert on every last nuance of 'scopes, it is inappropriate of you to address me the way got did in your comment. I suggest getting off that high horse of yours. You also SEEM to be saying that this particular DSO is capable of proper operation up to 200kHz, and it is not....not even close. You advised me to watch other videos, but perhaps you should watch some of the ones that have been done by proficient engineers on this very DSO; I am not alone in my assessment that it cannot be used up to 200kHz in the way that any normal 200kHz scope can be. You are correct that I made a couple of blunders in my video, saying I was pushing a certain button when I was accidentally pushing another. Unfortunately, I did not realize the error until the video was uploaded, too late to fix it. I have no apologies to make about this video. It fills the intended niche, and a lot of viewers have thanked me for doing it. I don't need to have anyone with a god complex laying into me for bothering to try helping others.

First, let be apologize for sounding like an asshole! I didn't realize that until I read your comments and then went back and re-read my post. . I have seen too many videos talking about how crappy that scope is when the person doing the review didn't even take the time to run through the calibration routine, giving the scope failing grades that it did not deserve. I get very angry when that happens because I consider that little scope to be one of the engineering marvels of our generation. I am constantly amazed with what the designers have accomplished in a product that could be sold for only $20 delivered, and still make a profit! I know that it is not even close to being a precision instrument; but for a hobbyist it is quite capable of telling him if his battery voltage is 3.7 vdc or 3.9 vdc, and can measure the RMS value of an audio signal, even if it is a squarewave. And it can do that without the user having to worry about ground loops. The frequency readings are pretty accurate without 'jiggle' in single sweep (hold) mode, and are accurate in auto mode if there enough cycles displayed to get a good average value. . I have taught, (back in the 70's and 80's) all levels of electronics at Morton Jr College and found myself spending more time teaching the kids how to use their bench scopes than I did teaching them about voltage dividers and RC time constants. I know they needed to learn how to use a scope also, but at that time it was more important to concentrate on the fundamentals. If these inexpensive DSO scopes were available at that time every student lasting more than 2 weeks in the class without dropping out would receive a DSO scope, a miniature prototyping board, some resistors and capacitors, and some 26 ga wire so they could take their experiments home with them and have more time to learn by experimentation. The fact that everything could be powered by a 9 volt battery was a plus! That tine scope has been greatly improved since it was first introduced as the model 138 by SainSmart. And it think it's next big improvement will require the addition of a cheap external ADC device that can sample at a 4 Mhz rate or faster. . As far as saying this video was better than your last one, I must have been confusing you with another presenter, and apologize for that too. . I did try to explain WHY the scope could not be expected to work very accurately over 100 Khz; and then how you can use that unwanted 'aliasing' to your advantage to display higher frequencies accurately by cheating the Nyquist criteria as long as the waveform is repetitive. It does however, work quite well at frequencies up to 20 Khz, which is about 1/10 the sampling rate. . Bottom line is that I got angry for a stupid reason, or reasons. I think that little miracle should be praised for what it is and what it IS capable of doing instead of being crucified for it's limitations. In the beginning of the video I had really high hopes that you might be the first one to actually do that, and I guess I was overly disappointed when you didn't. I felt like Charlie Brown after Lucy moved the football every time he would try to kick it; and texted while angry even though I should have known better.. . Please accept the apology of a grouchy (77 yr) old man.

@@Dennis-mq6or , I agree that this scope is a small miracle, and I am not aware of any other that is as well designed and packaged, and as practically useful, at such a low cost. I though the failings were more in regards to limited/poor documentation, and a couple misleading specifications. Couple that with many poorly done videos that either misrepresent the scope's capabilities, or condemn it as worthless or a toy because the reviewer himself did not know how to use a scope. That is why I took the time to write a user's manual for it, which many people have downloaded and found to be useful.

Mostly because it steers many possible new users away from it when it is such a disservice to do so. . Thank you again for performing that great service for a little gem, (when operated within it's design limitations), that has been misunderstood and underestimated for too long.

Would it be possible to add one more page to include the PDF schematic? . PS, I have a single file that contains ALL of the Heathkit schematics if you need any.. I have it because I have rebuilt may pieces of Heathkit equipment for people for no other reason than to show that they are good, relevant, pieces of test equipment even in this digital age....
