Pratah Smarami by Adi Shankara

Pratah Smarami is a sloka written by Adi Shankaracharya (a.k.a. Adi Shankara). This is a meditative chant that reminds one of one's essential divinity. Above is a presentation by Sunder Iyer, Founder, Kaivalya Yoga Gurukulam, wherein he offers yogic perspectives on this wonderful chant. Sunder Iyer is also an alumnus of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning which was founded by Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba of South India. Sunder had the privilege of staying at Baba's ashram for over 15 years.

Will you also tell me the meaning of this: Prathah smarani manasa Adhbhuthah mantaragam Jyothirmayam Sakala papathma prahardham I heard this when I was listening Ashta vakra Geetha recorded by Sri Sri Ravishankar's voice at his ashram Bangalore. Seeing oneself in the mirror one should smile and chant this. I'm chanting this daily....

Dear Dr. Sunder, I have listened to your presentation. You recite well but there is a problem with your interpretation of third Shloka. You mentioned that you have researched but provide no reference to interpretation. In the third verse तमस् is a neuter pratipadikam in the shloka, तमसः‌ is the 5th case and goes with परम्, as in तमसः‌ परम्, meaning “from” or “with respect to” which means beyond the darkness or transcends the ignorance (darkness) नमामि is connected to परमर्कवर्णम् So your grammatical interpretation to say, “I prostrate Tamas” is fundamentally wrong. Besides, to say I salute darkness makes no logical sense. Let me quote the meaning as Swami Tattvavidanandji, describes “Early in the morning I prostrate unto the timeless abode well known( in the scripture” as the Supreme Purusa. The infinite Supreme Reality shines like the sun and transcends the darkness……” Please edit your message on U Tube video. Akshay Dalal

Dear Akshayji, thank you for your comment. I do listen to scholars and their interpretations. Then I meditate on the sloka for it to reveal itself to me. This is how this particular solka was revealed to me. I salute the darkness, because without darkness (ignorance) the value of light (enlightenment) cannot be understood. In my humble opinion, interpretations of such powerful slokas need not be restricted to grammatical correctness.
