That's not the way to look at it. Perhaps your "3rd best player" is worth that much. Tavares was worth the contract he signed when he signed it. All of those guys are technically worth their contracts. But you can't have four elite players getting paid their full worth. One should be traded. Then they'll be fine. Have three elite players and two good ones.

@@biffstrong1079 I think it wasn't impossible for them to try to negotiate with their young guys to take a lot less (Nylander stupidly fell for it, but Marner's and Matthews' agents are much smarter). But the best way to avoid that, don't pay the overrated lifetime loser $11M and make him captain. It sets the table that mediocrity, lack of success, and mumbling hockey cliches after each predictable loss is acceptable. Regardless of that though, JT or not, the collapse against Montreal should have keyed them in that they needed to trade away 2-3 of them. But they never did, so here we are. 4 Softies at over $10M.

In Dubas's own words he said he was not ready to be an NHL GM and he sunk any chance of Matthews hoisting the Cup in Toronto under his leadership. There were a ton of other mistakes Dubas made based on inexperience, wanting to prove he knew better than the rest of the GM's, pride and arrogance. Lou tried to build a winning culture in Toronto but the MLSE and Shanahan was solely focused on making money and they havent changed nor will they. Leafs are a business to them.

What Dubas did wrong as GM of Toronto, was accept the job of GM of Toronto. Dubas was hired two years before he was 2 years away from being ready for the job. This was obvious at the time, that he was too young and naive and not experienced in dealing managing contracts. And look what happened, he screwed with the leafs with brutal contracts. Dubas should never have been offered the job, should never have accepted it and those are two biggest issues with the Kyle Dubs era. I am still absolutely stunned Dubas got hired as a GM so quickly by another team. As these guys say, the whole league looked at the way Dubas screwed the Leafs and said, we will not be doing that here. And then what do the pens do, hire him to run their team into the ground. Why would you sign the GM the entire hockey world has been critical off, who managed a team everyone laughs at for always under performing in the playoffs. So can someone please explain it to me, what is good about Kyle Dubas, what has he done to impress these NHL owners, to the point they ignore his resume and just hope it all works out ?

Matthews, Marner and Nylander, by the end of their rookie contracts, were elite. You weren't going to be able to "bet" on any of them. Would never pay him more than 2.5-3 million, or let him walk. Out of your GD mind to even think about paying a regular player based on what they might accomplish some day in the future. FFS! It's INSANE. It will bite the team in the butt even worse when they will be unable to trade their best assets (it's starting RIGHT NOW with the Marner issue; even if he accepts to be traded, you negotiate from a weak position with that full NTC; at best you'll get something useful in return, not anything nearly equivalent). Worst, you can lose them for NOTHING if they let their contract end and just sign elsewhere. The prospect pool is horrible, so trading stars before the end of their contract for picks and young upcoming players for the future is the way to go, but Dubas removed all leeway the team would normally have.

The salary cap in the NHL is going to $ 88 Million next season while the NBA's soft cap will allow you to go to $ 175 million next year with no penalty's .The NHL has a TV contract that maxes out at under 1 Billion per year .The NBA just announced a new contract for over 80 billion with incentives included over 11 years .The NHL's attendance was 57 million and the NBA's was 55 million .NHL TV ratings were up 185 % in the 18-49 demographic and more then 20 % overall again ..The NBA averages 3 times as many viewers globally then the NHL . Why is Gary Bettman still the commissioner if the NBA is being paid more then 8 times as much per year then the NHL and is only outdrawing it by 3-1 in total viewers globally ? ...whoever is negotiating their media deals should be fired along with Bettman and if the NHL had a comparable contract for the amount of viewers it now has the salary cap would be over $ 150 million dollars and teams would not have to be pinching penny's every year while trying to remain competitive .It would benefit Canadian teams even more being that many more players would stay north and pay the extra taxes if they made a few more million per season . Im not from Canada but it is crystal clear to me that the commissioner has spent 90 % of his energy the last 30 years concentrating on what happens in the south and southwest here and taken Canadians for granted ..The numbers dont add up and the NHL is either being grossly incompetent across the board or are totally corrupt .Its probably a little of both but something needs to change .and dont even get me started on how it costs 40 to 50 bucks for a beer and a sandwich when your salary cap is abysmally low ..

The Tavares contract impacting the other contracts is such a garbage argument lol. Tavares was a UFA and the Leafs were in a bidding war for his services. MM&N were RFAs who had no rights and nobody else negotiating with them other than a team prepared to sign an offer sheet which never happened. Leafs had all the leverage and they blew it.

The Leafs should've dropped out of the bidding war. Signing him for $11M set the franchise up for failure. They would've been so much better off using that money on their defense rather than another forward.

John was overpaid when he signed competing with 13 million offer wasn't an elite player only good player leafs should've refuse to sign like they did to other playeds like an auction highest bid wins and you get an overpaid player not worth the money because he isn't an elite player especially now top 200 player😢

no it wasn't. the problem was AND still is the lack of stable goaltending and defensive depth. Keefe was a solid coach but look at the teams Toronto lost to in this window: president's trophy winning caps, cup finalist bruins, bolts, habs and panthers. that being said, the Babcock experiment was decent(ish) but its also clear these contracts are holding them hostage similar to how the Parise and Suter contracts held the Wild hostage.

They also ignore that it was the McDavid and Draisaitl contracts that truly started the modern age of "betting on potential" deals for young players, not the Marner/Matthews deals. The Draisaitl deal in particular was heavily criticised when signed because of the management strategy of not betting on youth that wasn't truly generational like McDavid, Crosby and Ovechkin. I like the sdpn crew, but they continue to ignore context in many of their discussions surrounding the league.

Not one of the huge contracts to the young guys had been lived up to. Matthews Marner and Nylander should not have made more than 16 million combined. Contracts are lived up to by playoff success. Mathews scoring 69 goals in the regular season means nothing when he only scored 1 in the playoffs. Yes, he's the best goalscorer in the league right now, but not in the playoffs. Marner has been non existent in the playoffs, while att least Nylander has produced a little bit. The bar is so low for playoff success that we say Nylander is doing good in them. None of these 3 guys have succeeded in living up to their fat contracts. That they didn't earn. They were given. Dubas was the mastermind behind this travesty, and now we all see how he's royally screwing Pittsburgh. Currently imo this is a batch of talented players that has been wasted so far. Can they win next year and prove me wrong, ya ofc. But we've been saying that every year. Till it happens, this is a failure of a team, organization, and fanbase.

Actually, his biggest mistake was believing he was a legitimate NHL GM!! Not only did he screw the Leafs so badly that the damage echo will reverberate for years, but he kept losing picks and prospects for players he A) hoped would push the core four over the finish line B) Knew he could not resign!! He just kept running it forward until there was nothing left to give away and he also knew if he had taken the inexplicably ridiculous extension Shanahan somehow talked the ownership into, he would be exposed as the incompetent nincompoop he is, because there was nothing left to use as trade bait or money to acquire quality rentals!! Tell me Dubas, Grand Poobah, what does "nothing from nothing" leave? Worst NHL GM in the game's history! Jack ~'()'~
