@@Ever443 maybe for 5 seconds no longer. Here you have a broke ring most likely with the Engine mount broke the engine torques up and to the right locking the throttle open because of mechanical linkage.

Need to remove the air cleaner and put a carb cap on it. No air it will eventually shut down.

@@matchthat5053 I’m not sure where the “engine mount” thought came from. Has nothing to do with this blow up. Never was said how long they would run backwards just that they do and regularly when blowing up like this. Clearly dieseling not wide open throttle or any of that thinking. Look at video it was smoking a few laps before blowing up, more than likely running very hot then when that happened it’s simply dieseling on hot oil. Will run until it’s out of oil or the air is choked off by plastic bag or something similar over carb. Hell I’ve seen water poured in carb to get them to shut off. Even put in gear and choked down by letting clutch out against a wall or pole.

An internal combustion engine requires fuel and oxygen to run. Drunk runs out of stands and throws a garbage bag over carb. No air.

Detroit Diesel two strokes all have an air intake emegency shut off valve.. Fuel lines under the valve covers if htey leak the oil gets diluted with fuel.. Then they can suck the oil diluted with fuel past the rings and run on it until they blow up

As Mike said, Detroit's that are flat wore out will scavenge it's crankcase, even with no fuel source...But as you correctly state, unless it has another way to get air ( bad/ missing airbox cover gaskets) you can choke it off. With this engine, dieseling occurred because of high compression and something that is flammable (oil). And yes, when worn out, Detroit's can run backwards until it seizes. (built them since 1982, now retired)

@@dieselman2000 Yes but most Detroits that run away and and cut be shut off by fuel shut off have fuel in the engine oil.. This is caused by a leaking fuel line under the valve covers.. .. You have to check your engine oil level every day .. If the oil lever starts getting higher than the full line you can bet one of those steel fuel lines is leaking at one of the many fittings..

The throttle is hung open ok where's the emergency cut off every race car has on? Or this is something I learned when driving racecar every car racecar or street car the brakes have more power than the engine. So if the throttle is hung open put it in gear and slam on the brakes causing the car to stall.

It's called dieseling we had this happen to a late model a couple years ago fuel was shut off but it was running on its own oil just had to wait till it burned up all it's oil

At 1:52 you can see a crewman shutting off the master switch. Hot motor, running on motor oil, from heat of compression, ie; "dieseling". Cutting the air will stop it, block off carb.

Do they not have an emergency shut off switch like if you have a drag car that can do eight sevens or eights you're required to have a switch on the back of the car that you can pull and it cuts the power I'm going to tell me these cars that a professional driver like Larson's driving doesn't have like a switch like that on the back of the car to shut the power off or something or inside the car like the throttle being hung open shouldn't matter you should have an emergency shut off switch and damn that was a lot of smoke

The do have master switches, what happened was the motor blew apart snd oil was getting into the combustion chambers snd burning instead of gas. Don’t need spark cause of how hot the the motor is. Look up runaway engines they feed off their own oil till they seize up.

They should have a fuel cutoff inline to the rails. That's just bad build process in my opinion. My midget had two manual cut-off valves. One in the cockpit I could reach and one next to the fuel tank before the pump that emergency workers could reach. I also had an electrical kill switch in the drivers area that could be easily cut-off.

It's not running off the fuel. It's running off the oil. Diesels are mainly know for that, but can happen on normal engines.

This is exactly why Kyle Larson should just stay away from dirt track racing. I'm not familiar with the driver that went up in smoke. He was obviously pushing his equipment beyond its capabilities to catch a guy that runs the best of the best equipment every night be it a sprint, late model, midget, whatever. Now this team has possibly suffered a catastrophic blow to their season. Maybe that was their only engine? Let the Kyle Larson lovers bash me now..
