Michael Stipe and Mike Mills sit down with Kyle Meredith to remember R.E.M. 's 1996 album New Adventures In Hi-Fi for it’s 25th anniversary. The rock legends talk about writing the bulk of the record while touring the Monster album, the idea of spontaneity within the songs, and Stipe using religion as a writing tool. We also hear what it was like for the lead singer to meet his idol Patti Smith for the first time, hearing Eddie Vedder and Jason Isbell’s recent covers, and new music on the way from both individuals.

I met Michael Stipe at the 40 Watt Club maybe a week after Automatic For The People came out. I was drunk and sort of rudely bumped into him too hard, but he was very nice about it and allowed me to make up for it by buying him Rolling Rocks all night as we both stood there and watched Vic Chesnutt perform. If he's reading this he might remember the night because they presented him with the original painting that graces the cover of Talking Heads Little Creatures album in an onstage ceremony between sets. The secret REM show at the 40 watt was the following weekend. Good times! It was like the exact moment in time when he was the biggest rock star in the world.

Patti Smith used to live in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, as Michael says, on the outskirts of Detroit, not far from where I used to live. Never met her but always kept my eyes open for a chance meeting in those suburbs, which was not conducive to meeting anyone easily. Lol Anyhow, did you say “Driver Ace?” Gosh, I hope not.

Right before New Adventures in Hi-Fi. My favorite REM release. A huge fan from the beginning New Adventures... blew me away after Monster. It fit my life like a glove at the time. Every song. Patti Smith. A slow motion record of intensity and insight.
