Aren't there valid reasons somebody might want to hide their real identity? Let's say a woman, who is a hairdresser professionally but also a car nerd, has a car blog. But to be taken seriously by her audience, she uses a male pen name and persona. Her knowledge and expertise are real, but her brand is intentionally not based around her identity. Wouldn't linking to her hairdresser LinkedIn profile be at best confusing and at worst damaging to the brand? And secondly, what if somebody has already built up a site around a persona over several years. Would you still suggest they switch to using their real identity somehow? I'm not sure what Google would make of that.

I disagree with his points on expertise being only about "proving that you're a real person". That is certainly part of it, but Google also looks at your overall presence/visibility on the web - official profiles (not just social media), mentions of your name on authority sites, published books, etc. To improve E-A-T, you want to make yourself *known*. If you Google your name, you should have an info panel show up, perhaps a Wikipedia page on yourself, multiple interviews on KZbin/podcasts, etc. If nothing shows up, you're not an authority and do not have E-A-T.

@Niche Wow! Jim sounds great. And this is perfect because I don’t really like my money, so I’m always looking for ways to have it scammed from me. I mean I could just burn my money, but who wants to deal with getting a burn permit, and buying matches…in this economy? C’mon…ain’t nobody got money for matches. Plus there’s the smell of burned money - NO thank you! So, yes, you and your scammer friends sound like the perfect solution. Give me just a few minutes to go convert my cash into Target gift cards and I’ll be right back with you.

25:49 So all expertise boils down to is being a real person? How does that square with the quality raters guidelines talking about people who are "experts" (and those with "experience" now that we have E-E-A-T)? If all it takes to satisfy "E" is "being a real person," why do the quality raters guidelines, in the context of E-E-A-T, say some content is "best left to experts"?

@@guldcat1619 Well, as a tax expert, I can tell when an article is expertly written vs. written by someone who's not an expert but has read other articles on the subject. There are cues - semantics, the way things are phrased, qualifying language used, exceptions noted, etc. I can't imagine that a robot that is constantly tweaked to better understand language would find picking up on these signals difficult in the long run, especially for YMYL topics. Granted, I'm not so sure about bonsai trees.

This was an interesting session and I enjoyed it. I checked some trust factor issues mentioned today and didn't find why Kyle said being practiced, such as an address, phone number, or even copyright up to date. Backlinko has an older article with the same advice, too. Yet I could not find any address, phone numbers, or email addresses on Kyle's site, Backlinko, CNet, or even Mcdonald's. I checked another site in my niche and only found phone numbers on the contact page. So is this old advice that, like so many other things shared online, is no longer relevant yet still keeps getting repeated?

A site can be successful without NAP but. It looks like Google is increasing value of EAT/NAP but where's the data. I think successful sites need EAT less than new sites, but it's all about risk. You need to cover the bases.

Kyle asked me to post this from him (for some reason, he wasn't able to get it posted): "I can't speak for the other sites but kyle roof .com isn't trying to rank for anything so there is no need. If you don't care about ranking for anything with your sites then you can ignore EAT signals. I would bet if you are as large and well known as Backlinko, CNet, or McDonalds, you are also probably safe. In all other cases, it's not an if it's a when on Google checking your site for EAT. I'd also note I only share things that I am currently doing that help with growing and maintaining your organic traffic."

@@niche-pursuits Thanks for the update. I implemented the recommendations Kyle mentioned, even though I don’t know how to measure if they improve things for me or not. On the surface, it seems to make sense to assure humans that my business is real. Checking other sites to find the same thing seemed like a way of trying to verify the advice, but I haven’t found an online business site yet that does it.

It seems like every discussion of EAT must be precluded by a 30 minute argument about whether EAT is real or not. I had an affiliate project hit by Google this year and noticed that one of the winning sites was incorporating a lot of Kyle's recommendations. Applying EAT was one of the steps I did to get recovery. Not the only step, mind you, as recoveries are generally multi-faceted. But I do feel that we have reached the tipping point in the Algorithm where the top-3 spots in Google are being evaluated more closely, and Kyle's practical pieces of advice are going to help a lot of viewers.

For the address and phone number part, bloggers don't have those. Should I try to do it more like bloggers and even come off as one to Google or go down appearing as a Business route? Bloggers are likely to be more safe than affiliate sites during the updates keeping in mind that bloggers have plenty of affiliate and sponsored content. Also if the site is 100% informational, do you still recommend going down the business path? Refund email, address, etc? Thank you!

if you are making money with the site, you have a business. That's the main point. You wouldn't be making the choice between those two things a blogging site that exists to make money is a business or part of a business.

Does Google understand my topical authority for a specific 'topic' because I create internal linking between these articles, or because Google is able to recognize on its own the relevance? I imagine it is a bit of both. I was just wondering if I screw up internal linking, can Google still pick up that I have several articles on the same topic.
@kyleroof7714

it would be a bit of both. When creating silos I try to be very deliberate with my links and limit excessive linking to unrelated things.

Pushing author bios and their personal networks feels quite artificial. A business really has to present itself as the 'E' to have any long term value (ie brand), and many highly qualifed, experienced corporate staff would actually object to having personal bios, photos and social links across public content. Some exceptions of course such as medicine and science, but broadly, no one cares that Jim from the software team with a 1st class comp-sci degree from MIT, three dogs, and an interest in hockey wrote the article. Why should google? Google updates often target sites doing things to build signals for SEO that don't actually benefit real users.

It's interesting how this will all get monetised. Chatgpt search will just be like Alexa - 'here's something I found on the web' but it instead will write a fresh explanation saying 'after my research of various resources (including your blog) this is my response' nobody needs to visit the websites. I guess advertisers can just pay to sponsor the replies. Do think blogging and display ads will wind down though so make hay now. Google already giving its own answers surrounded by more ads on its front page and Bing presents even more to make you not click away already.

@@pmich8913 I disagree.. once people see they can use ChatGPT on Bing, many people will quit using Google. This will end up hurting pretty much every industry out there. Unless perhaps Google comes up with a better solution. The real problem is the soulless evil people that run ChatGPT. They are already hinting there will need to be a universal basic income because of the fallout from AI.
