He was in my military history class at the University of South Carolina in 2013-2014. It was a small class, and I noticed he had all these injuries, but never asked about them. On the last day of class, the professor (retired Air Force Lt. Col.) read out the story and while he was crying, pointed out to Kyle and said, "That is your classmate sitting back there. He will be getting the Medal of Honor for these actions I just read to y'all!" It was such a cool and humbling experience. The entire semester, and we had no idea as a class that we were sitting next to and talking to a true American hero!

@@tomek6132 some just have the feels. Being a disabled vet myself I got a little teary eyed. I lost a lot of my brothers to IEDs and several came home maimed too. I was an 88M and we joked around calling ourselves moving targets to try and desensitize ourselves to the reality that in those early days of Iraq we were in fact moving targets and we were getting blown to pieces all the time.

I'm a Marine, and emding our bootcamp theres a big final rest called the crucible. Its like 3 days marching 55-60 miles, a single mre, and various rifle and team building challenges. The challenges are based off medal of honor recipients and actions. And each one the di's read out the moh recipients actions.

I was float working in the ICU for a weekend of what is now known as Walter Reed as my first duty station in the Navy, as I normally worked on another ward... Kyle was one of my patients that weekend and I remember the night he arrived, to see him now years later fills my heart with warmth.

When a plane got shot down in Vietnam and landed into enemy territory they would fly in drop-down secure the downed Pilots clear the area of any enemy combatant and secure a landing zone for helicopters to fly them out. He saw an insane amount of combat and was in numerous firefights and has many stories about the shit he did and saw. The para-jumpers are the real deal and are highly respected by other special forces in this country and around the world.

Joseph Paluszak how do you know? Where was he treated? Because I used to work as a (German) army doctor in the ER in Afghanistan. The hospitals in Kunduz and Mazar E Sharif where run by Germans, with staff from Scandinavia and other NATO countries. We mainly treated badly wounded US soldiers, so why don‘t you give us some credit 😉 The hospitals on American army bases on German ground don‘t really have the infrastructure to treat these kind of injuries.

After two tours in Afghanistan I know that american soldiers with heavy wounds are taken care of by american doctors and surgeons as soon as possible, wherever they are. And being wounded in Helmand, I doubt he would have been transported to Kunduz or Mazar E Sharif, not really nearby. Talk about taking credit for someone else... If anyone else than US it might have been UK.

@@Fromtheave, Different training, different mindset, different missions. Generally, the Marine corps produces Marines and the Army produces soldiers. I've seen a Marine take actual offense to being called a soldier before.

I can’t believe No one is talking about his selflessness... admirable fella. All he does in all his interviews is talk about the remarkable work individuals did to save his life along the road. As a MARINE mom I am so so sad that this amazing MARINE had to go through this terrible event. My son is still a "boot" but he is embracing his o311 job and has earned designated marksman in his team. I am so proud and terrified at the same time! But I will tell you these young men and women are true hero's and now that I'm a MARINE mom I feel like all MARINES are my children!!! Kyle thank you MARINE for giving what you've given you are my family and I am so very very PROUD to be apart (as small as it is) of it.

I know the feeling. My younger cousin is a Marine as well, he recently made Lance Corporal. But I am constantly worrying about his safety, because we've always been close, and I even held him in my lap as a toddler (I was around 13 when he was born), but I also couldn't have more respect or be more proud of him at the same time.

Atalanta571 They got trained by professionals with a lot more skill then they had at the beginning of their doctor career. Then, you might say, who trained those doctors? It goes back and back until you get to the doctors who used trial and error to help their patients. If something didn’t work, they wouldn’t use it anymore. And if something saved a person’s life, then it was recreated over and over again until they perfected the treatment.

I was apart of a team that received patients like Kyle Carpenter in 2010 in Germany. It’s surreal to hear the patient’s perspective and appreciation for the care provided from the battle field to recovery at home. There were so many other stories like Kyle’s. There were plenty of dark hours at night, and like he said it’s pretty hard to convey, honestly.

When I was 20, I was set to join the marines, i ended up rolling my car down the freeway at 70mph. I shattered my left forearm and broke my back in 2 places. I have 2 eight inch plates on the bones in my arm and 16 screws. And I have avoided back surgery for 15 years. And when I see things like this I realize that what I want through, was nothing. This man is a walking miracle 🍻 I will always support our troops, God bless.

I was lucky enough to hear him speak at Ft Carson. When he walked in, the entire place was silent and in awe. Then outta nowhere we all erupted in applause and cheering. He's definitely an amazing inspiration. I wish I was more like him.

I truly hope this guy and his loved ones get the psychology support they may need for the rest of his life, for free. These men and their loved ones sacrifice so much for their country. He has such a positive attitude and is so thankful for everything that’s been done, to ensure he got back home. I wish him and his family all the very best moving forward x

heard from my brother that his friend belly-flopped a nade in a firefight. some min later when the fightfight died down, the guy was still laying on the nade. it was a dud or inert. it was an old soviet F1. Bomb squad had to come out, lift him up. then quickly pull the bowl on the grendade. the guy walked away crying, id guess with pissed pants. my brother said the CO ordered a weeks worth of MRE just for him. best he could have probably have gotten.

a long time ago, i asked my grandfather: "grandfather what is war?" his answer: "- my son, war is when old men send young men to their deaths!" My grandfather had just turned 15 when he was sent to the eastern front. his two brothers had died there in previous years. When he returned from Russian captivity at the age of 23. all 5 brothers were dead. none of his schoolmates survived this madness. i'm german. Mr. Carpenter. God gave you a second chance, for some reason you didn't die. I am convinced that God protected you. Since you still have a job to do here on Earth! Nobody knows what the task is. only god knows that. I hope your recovery continues. With the greatest respect, before your will to live, your attitude and love for your fatherland. I wish you a long, good, fulfilled and successful life. p.s sorry for my bad english i am 48 y old. my last english lesson at school is more than 30 y ago.

Wow.. it doesn't matter how many times I hear his story or hear him talk it never ceases to amaze me how humble and grateful he is and the pride that I feel as an American and to have these soldiers sacrifice not just for this country because when you're on the battlefield it's not about the country the people at home it's about the brothers to the right of you and the brothers to the left of you I just stand in awe
