Simple tool Put a Dixie cup full of water in your freezer. Put a penny on top after it freezes. If you open freezer and the coin has sank at all your food is probably bad. Total cost $.25

I agree that alarms are necessary. However, if we're looking at a grid down situation then having a wifi unit is going to depend on you having the power to maintain your wifi in an operational state. My cool prepper tool is an old fashioned, probe unit; it's a better option for grid down. Better still, get both and be ready for anything!! They are also great for testing - does my freezer stay colder longer with a blanket on top, etc. Thanks Jonathan this is an important must-have.

The Fourth of July, my freezer went out. Fortunately, I caught it quickly and was able to cook the thawed food so it was not a total loss. Two days later, I had alarms on both freezers. The receivers are in a place where I can check it frequently.

I've had these sitting in my Amazon cart for a while. I've hesitated buying because they don't have the best reviews (several brands, not just one). Some say they stopped working after a couple months, some say the temperature reading is off, etc. But I think it's a really great idea, especially for our fridge and freezers for power outages.😊

I have not had good luck with these. I actually trashed the first ones (2 sets). Later, I decided to try again and bought two more. These will be headed to the trash soon, I think. There has to be some that are better. Of course, they will cost more.
@organizedchaoslife2 ай бұрын
@@happytrails7835 Yes. I hope there are some better quality ones out there somewhere because it is such a great idea! All that I have seen (on Amazon anyways) have been comparable with reviews. I wonder if restaurants use this sort of thing at all. They may be the people to ask to find high quality.

About as useless as a paddle, with no boat. I had just filled my freezer with over 900lbs of wild game when my job required me to fly half way across the United States to work on a project for 6 weeks. When I returned, I could smell an odor before I even got to the front door to unlock it. Long story short, I had to replace the wood flooring, sub flooring, and freezer, in my laundry room/pantry. My lesson learned is that if I now plan to store food for more than a month, it gets either pressure canned, dehydrated, pickled, fermented, cured, and or smoked. And no, I still can't justify the cost of a freeze drier, when I live alone with no family, in my off-grid cabin.

Off grid? What happened to the power source you are using? Freeze dryers are amazing.
@HWhit90002 ай бұрын
@@CharlieB_P2ST When the compressor goes out on a freezer, it doesn't matter what the power source is. I have nothing against freeze driers, I just can't justify spending thousands of dollars on something that will never pay for itself, in my lifetime. Not when there are so many different ways to preserve food.

I’ve had one of these for years. Especially handy for a freezer that you may not open for days. Let’s you know if the freezer is inoperative before you notice a puddle and food is ruined. Does not require Internet , but I’m sure those do exist. When the power goes out, my freezer temperature rises at a rate of 4 degrees per hour. Normally set at 0 degrees, when I see temperature rise to +10, I start my gas generator and run for 15 minutes to get to 0. Saves a lot of fuel. No need to run generator or power station constantly to save food.

I have this!! I can measure three different places with the main and two devices. We put one device by the hot tub pump! I can be at peace the $700 pump is fine when temps go low. We have lost a pump and they are expensive. I have the other sensor in the garage freezer. I put the main unit on the back door to see daily and it measures the door temp. I had the main unit in my fridge but it’s a bit too far from the hot tub.

We recently got a new water heater. I had the plumber put a pan in as well, and also a moisture alarm in the pan. He thought I was crazy. I think I was being proactive. Nobody needs 40 gallons of water flooding the cellar.

It’s great that those fridge and freezer monitors track the temperature inside your appliance but what if you are away from home and the power goes out for a few days? Since nobody is there to hear the alarm go off your frozen food could thaw and then refreeze when the power comes back on so you might never know that there had been an issue. Are there monitors that will record the temperature swings inside the fridge or freezer over several days (or possibly a week or two) and create a report to let you know that there had been a power outage and the food may now be unsafe?

I have a food storage question. When I first got into prepping about two years ago, I used mylar bags and oxygen absorbers for things like rice and dry beans. But now I have found that I like the buckets with the gamma lids better. Could I open the mylar packages that I’ve already done and put the dry beans in buckets? Would that mess anything up? The mylar bags are still vacuum sealed, and holding the seal, I just want things in buckets for storage purposes.
