oh ya this topic is interesting! wish to see comparison of this burr for espresso and filter coffee. So far for ssp mp, filter is all the way nice! but for espresso is quite depend on bean, for ethiopia bean which have nice acidity, floral or fruity taste, the espresso taste is impressive from ssp mp. but for bean like brazil, el slavador, which is strong body and chocolaty, the outcome from ssp mp might not be the best, i suspsct because the grind is less of fine ground, and flow rate is faster compare to DLC burr, so the espresso is low in body

I love your video. I have been using the Kopi Deva for approx 4 months and backed them on Indigogo when they launched-I waited two years… for the grinder. But just wanted to correct a few things on this video. 1. The grinder comes with a holder and the dosing cup can actually sit nicely, and the coffee grind will go directly into it. No mess 2. The retention rate, The grinder comes with an RDT bottle. Just like all grinders, RDT it and I have no issues with retention. But I know this is subjective. 3. To feed the beans into the grinder, it comes with a nice stainless steel bean cup that you can weigh your coffee beans on, and the size of the cup fits directly into the grinder with no problem. Hope that helps. It's a great grinder but with a premium price, unfortunately. (well… at least it is better value than lagom )

64mm grinders have a huge advantage in that the burr options are much cheaper than 83mm. I would love to see you compare df64 gen2 w/ SSP MP, df64v with DLC and df83v2 with standard Itamill steel burrs as they all start to be in comparable price ranges with those burrs. If df64 + SSP MP tastes as good as df83 + standard burrs, that would be a HUGE advantage in favor of df64 gen2.

DF83 stock burrs are very different than SSP MP in 64mm (I believe they're making SSP 83mm MP burrs but they're pretty pricey in 83mm!) SSP MP are very high clarity and low body, ideal for quality light roasts and pour overs / cupping. They can be unforgiving when dialed in poorly. DF83 stock burrs are good all round burrs, you get some body, less intensity and some flavour clarity with more lingering aftertaste. Probably best for Espresso medium roasts but works for light too. I found it did really well for Aeropress too I might put it up against some other grinders for pour over because I haven't tried that yet with the DF83.

I just received my DF64V today and have only ground some old beans but not brewed anything yet. I'm really impressed by how quiet the grinder is, and the paint (I have the black model) is so much better looking in real life than what I was expecting from photos I've seen on-line. The paint really looks great and that was a huge relief. Things I don't like: Even though I'd been told I have the new model with the non-stalling controller board I did manage to stall it at 600 RPM using medium roast beans from a cold start. I turned it over and dumped out all the beans out, started it, and it was fine. The other thing I don't like is that is quiet so there's no easy way to tell it's on. I ground some beans at 600 RPM again and it was so quiet after it was done I accidentally left it running for 10 mins or so. I'm afraid I'll forget and leave it on all day if I'm not careful. I wish either that it'd turn off automatically when it was done or that the RPM dial light would turn off when the grinder's off. The light on the RPM dial is really bright and it's not great that it's on all the time anyway. Seems like a simple oversight that would have been an easy thing to do right. In any case, in general I'm happy and looking forward to playing with it this weekend.

Totally agree - the bright LCD numbers lit up 24 hours a day are a design flaw on the DF64v. Maybe some kind of tinted film to darken it would be a good mod

I have the KOPI Deva since 2 months and from what I can read improvements were made compared to yours from a previous/older batch. Personally when using RDT with the included glass spray bottle I have minimum retention, and only rarely do I have to run the motor again to get it all out. I was shocked to see how much got stuck in your video! (8:50)

I watched lots and lots of grinder review videos and felt a bit lost...then I settled on one of the 64mm burr grinders and at 500 Euros for the DF64 Gen 2, 550 for the DF64V and 700 for the Timemore 064s, the DF64V is the one that made most sense to me so that's what I got. Coming from my Smart Grinder Pro, I was blown away - looks, build, footprint, the fact that it runs absolutely whisper quiet - everything. That and of course the fact that it doesn't seem to fight for its life like the Sage whenever I try to grind light roasted beans finely enough for my 58mm portafilter (the Sage was doing great paired with my 51mm Delonghi).

The palm tapping is such a good tip!! Even with RDT I've been banging on my lagom mini to get the last bit out (probably not good for the alignment, I know). I was considering getting some bellows and hadn't heard the complaints you mentioned. I'm really glad I didn't because I can definitely see that being a really annoying problem. Just the palm tapping speeds up my grind time and removes the need for the bellows and RDT!

This last version of DF64 is called Gen 2, not v2. I have a DF64 V2 (made in 2021) but I made some modifications. I changed the declumper to a v4 & also added a control disk above the rotating burr like what Niche zero has got. V4 declumper is much better than the other versions & the control disk enables you to do a hot start without any popcorning issues.

PTI: I’m about to purchase one from the Turin line. I’ll be doing pretty much just espresso, as I have a brew grinder. I love the DF 64 V2s plasma generator at work. Wow. I also like the idea of the DF83s more traditional type shots with the OEM burr. I’ll be pulling shots on a Flair 58+. Disregarding the variance in cost, would I be cool with the DF 64 V2. Ironically I’m coming from a Niche Zero… but was never a fan of the Kony burr. Thanks much. You are appreciated more than you know.

64v is currently my top 1 grinder after consider the price, the value it bring, the burr swap option in future. been used for few month and change to ssp mp burr and the performance on filter was super great, the retention is super low near to 0. But for espresso, i more prefer the DLC, if using bean like brazil, or medium roast blend...and now...im consider to get 1 more 64v stick with DLC burr for espresso (or future change to lab sweet burr) then another 64v stick with ssp mp all the way just for filter coffee.

I got a 2nd batch (V2?) Zerno coming SOON! With BLIND SSP MP Burrs, And like 30lbs of seasoning coffee, I'm curious to see if it's going to make a difference pre- and post seasoning. I also have my P64 with SSP MP burrs which should be seasoned by now! Still not sure what my favorite 64mm burr is, but MP, Mizen and the older P64 stock burrs (looked similar to the DF64v burr geometry and probably identical to the Gorilla Gear burrs, but without the black coating). I also liked the SSP HU espresso burrs, but didn't keep them around long because I had so many grinders and burrs, I already had a low clarity and a high clarity grinder I didn't feel I needed a medium / balanced one . But I do think it's nice to have a good balanced option now. I think that's what I do like about the Old P64 burrs, they're a good balanced burr nice clarity and some body, good for filter or espresso generally good all round. The updated Mizen burrs (a bit less clarity but more body vs the original Mizen burrs) might also fit that description!

I keep thinking the Kopi Deva is a conical burr with that shape. Funny you also said the same thing. Get a little ceramic Gong Fu tea vessel thing (Loveramics has their own coffee version but it's more $$), it helps with dosing into small opening grinders like Weber Key/HG2. I use for mine, and got some extras to sell :)

Great overview /comparison :) I never used to mind using a bellows, but I noticed it does seem to increase inconsistency in your dose output sometimes when you use them and does make more of a mess generally. So now I think it's best if a grinder doesn't require it. I don't use it on the DF83 after modifying the declumper it only has about 0.3g retention and I don't find that's too bad. I also found the Eureka Oro SD worked better for me WITHOUT the bellows. DF64v borrowed a lot from the P64, and I think they got the magnetic chute idea from Kafatek grinders which had the magnetic chute WAAAY before :) DF64v Burr vs DF64 Gen2 with the same but 'uncoated' burr, have you found differences in taste? The belief used to be that the burr coatings just affect longevity (and seasoning time) BUT I believe the coatings DO affect the flavour profile, I'm suspecting the coated burrs have a lower friction co-efficient and will generate less fines. So slightly less body and more clarity on the DF64v, would be my guess. Also lower RPM can go further in that direction, but that's something that is debated. I think it does but it also depends on which burrs you're using, I noticed more dramatic differences with variable RPM with SSP MP burrs. Wow on the DF64 Gen2, that IS a very nice neat coffee stream. Nice. It sounds like a regular DF64 to me, which isn't bad, just sounds like a powerful motor. One other thing the Gen2 DF64 has that the DF64V does not, is PORTAFILTER Forks! So that is a pro for those who don't want to 'HAVE' to use the cup.

Few improvements while using the Kopi deva. 1) Use the cup holder to keep it from getting messy 2) use a lower grind setting 600-900rpm, then reduce the rpm with the knob after grinding all the beans. This will cause the rest of the grinds to drop into cup. No fuss at all and more importantly no retention.

Hey, in Canada - "Zed." No. In the Commonwealth - "Zed." The grinder with the lithium battery really doesn't make sense to me unless you are transferring to a boat or RV. So I get the grinder, where do I put it. Well, relatively close to my espresso machine. And what is my espresso machine close to - an electrical outlet. If you are lazy, I am, you want the grinder close to an outlet to plug it in for charging. And what will most people do, leave the machine plugged in all the time because it's a mild pain in the butt to plug in the unit for charging, then unplugging it. And what will kill your lithium battery? Leaving the unit plugged in all the time.

5:00 I think just like with cars or cameras / photography gear or probably anything, you're likely going to have better results getting used to your gear you have and knowing it's limitations and quirks so you know what works best with it and can really master it. Of course if you have an espresso machine or grinder that's inconsistent that could cause complications in that case (especially for coffee, you want consistency, so might be worth upgrading!) but if you have something that works nicely, working to understand it and master it should give you better coffee than upgrading and having to re-learn how things behave, (and potentially have to re-season burrs etc). I've gone through a lot of burrs and grinders and probably would have enjoyed coffee more if I just had a stuck with one or two, also dialing in for espresso on multiple grinders for comparing and contrasting is twice as tricky :p

Love your videos, but the KOPI DEVA presentation looks extremely unfair. I have two and I've seen issues like you showed but when it's put together correctly, these issues went away. It's clearly not made to be beat on or I don't find bellows as necessary at all. Simply turning up the rpms to 1200 at the end until the grind goes quite and turning it off lets the coffee fall out completely in my experience. Did you call Kopi Deva to see if your experience was off? I had a problem similar and it was easily resolved and find retention not a problem at all, especially on filter. SSP MP filter in this is fantastic. Battery lasts a month and it's small and classy looking. No cables is so nice for the kitchen. Price is now comparable to the Zerno which is a fair point, but it's handmade in England to super sturdy quality and precision. You also have a 1000w motor on battery that grinds light coffee at 200rpm without stalling on battery! A fair review of it would at least point out these aspects. I love mine over my DF64, Niche, etc. I am open to a larger 83mm/98mm zerno if they make it.

Gotta say, while I do appreciate the removable chute on the df64V, I really still think it should have an ionizer. I don't want to take a chute off and clean it all the time, and I live in a very dry climate so static is no joke. Thanks for the video. Do you need to align the butts of a new grinder? I got the 64v and I’m afraid to make fine grinds. This is my first. First thing I did was zero it. Even slightly above zero, my grinds are still big. I’m using the stock burr.

I was so close to getting the Deva (it certainly is the most beautiful of the lot) but was worried about the retention issues and, to a lesser extent, the very small port for dumping the beans into which almost requires use of their included scoop. This is the first time I've seen someone actually show the workflow and how to deal with the retention, and it 100% validated my choice. Sad... this grinder is SO close to being perfect. On the other hand, the flow of grounds out of the DF64 2 is astonishing! I wish it was a bit more aesthetically pleasing. I really wish you would have shown workflow with the Zerno and DF64v the way you did with the others. Seeing and hearing how they work is so important... :(

Deva owner here. Its a phenomenal grinder and there are no retention issues. The grinds can sit in the shoot at times, more at the higher rpm but if you turn the button off and on a few times the grinds fall out. Beautiful grinder

Kyle, I'm confused by your comment about plastic in the DF64. I have one and literally everything (base, body, forks, adjustment cap and upper carrier) is solid aluminum. The only plastic parts are the vinyl wrap around the body, the dial sticker on top of the adjustment cap, and the indicator light on the power button.

I really need a grinder and I need help deciding if I should just go for it or wait for V2 to appear in our market which can take a very long time and will be surely way more expensive than 500$.

Wow that kopi Deva looks amazing! It looks like you got the old one though as they have made improvements on this since. From what I read on their website and Indiegogo campaign that they made some improvements to this issue. Does anyone have this new grinder and can they confirm this? I do love the idea and look of it, looks really premium but I agree a few improvements could still be made. Mainly the opening for putting the coffee in and I don't like the idea of needing a cup holder. Exciting time for getting a grinder though. We will never get tired of these reviews because it's nice to know what's out there and how grinders are improving over time . :)

I own the Kopi Deva for 17 months now, and to me it has the best workflow of any SD grinder i have ever used. There are no workflow issues. You lost the peripheral that comes with it... This grinders has exactly ZERO retention when you use it how it's supposed to. I very much prefer pushing on/off 1-2 times to using bellows in addition to the fact that no bellows make any grinder prettier. It is different to other grinders, but better imo.
