You will get it figured out. It's the first time you did something this big. I am sure you went into it knowing it would be more of a learning experience than a straight forward job. Can't wait to see it finished.

That's a bugger mate, thankfully it's more easily solvable than a shattered blade! Keep up the great work guys!

Oh yea, that would be a pain to have to renormalize, but thankfully it wasn't a catastrophic failure. Looking forward to watching how you worked through this. Thanks for sharing

KYLE, You owe it to yourself, SALT POT, SALT POT, SALT POT! Especially if you’re planning to do anymore long pieces in the future. At least rig a thermocouple up to that forge. You don’t even need to hook it up to a PID/temp controller. Use a multimeter to read the temp and you’re GTG. Just drill a little 3/16” hole for the thermocouple and you’re done. It would take 10mins to install it and cost less than $40. What am I talking about? You probably already know all of this and have done it already or are in the process of doing it. Although I imagine you might take a little break from making swords for a while. I also wanted to say you and your brother(and dad for helping) are AWESOME for making these videos. You are the only master bladesmith, that I know of, that’s sharing your knowledge with the world, for free like this. You’re a genius with this stuff and you’ve been blessed with a gift. I appreciate you sharing it. I’ve been making knives for around 6-7yrs and this is very inspiring. Thanks again SO MUCH for making these videos. Thanks to your brother for pushing you to do them. Please make more. I’m subscribing to your channel and telling others about it to. Oh and one last thing... please make a steel quench tank too. I’d HATE to see something go wrong on a sword quench. You could heat it easier that way too. Just build the base so that you could slide a little hot plate underneath it. You could heat it from the top using a piece of hot rebar. Man... you still might have a cold(room temp) area in the very middle with there being that much volume... who knows. Maybe just quench room temp with parks 50 like you said. It would be hard to get that oil the same temp throughout.

Have you looked into a k-type thermocouple that will allow you to measure inside the heat treat forge and adjust your air flow to get a consistent temp inside? I have an oil barrel forge and that's what I did. It's pretty tunable. If you sheath the thermocouple in ceramic, you can run a reducing atmosphere and minimize the carbon loss. I also just use one burner input near the bottom and baffle it with some fire brick to avoid hot spots. I'm just an apprentice and don't mean to preach to a master, but sometimes I get too close to a project and overlook what's right in front of me. Hope I didn't overstep.

An episode or two ago I saw that you used a piece of rebar to check the temperature for the normalizing. Is the rebar not similar enough to do the same thing for the heat treat?

Sorry but I thought your reaction was hilarious and priceless. You wanted to be at 1500 and you’re all like 1750. Me and my kids can’t stop laughing watched it about 5 or 6 times. I love the attention to detail.

For full disclosure we thought about pulling that part but we wanted everyone to see the good times and the challenging times . It was an extremely rare moment in our knife making history. Kyle felt poorly for his reaction and was quick to apologize. Kyle is my son but he is also one of my heroes along with Joseph, David and several others from scripture. Glad you’re enjoying the vids with your family my friend. That Rocks. You da dad 👍🏻☕️🔥⚔️ Happy new year Dad

@@KyleRoyerKnives you guys are awesome, I wish I had that skill and to be able to work with my father. Your boys look like great men. Tell you the truth I wish I had his temper, I get more upset dropping an ice cream bar or something meaningless. And it does make the show more real, we all learn from the good and the bad.

I’m sure you’ve probably found a solution but couldn’t you possibly build up the front of your oven with brick and go from there? Idk if that would work because of the lack of heating elements in one side but idk maybe you can think of some way to fix this problem with doing it that way

That's a kick in the pants. Any idea of why its not holding the right heat?
@dgonzales81465 жыл бұрын
Hey man, i may be wrong but i believe if you heat the oil up not super hot but around 250-300F you can quench the blade at a little bit higher temp and not have an adverse affect on it

You'll get it figured out, you guys did build that forge special for the sword correct? I could see the anger coursing through your veins young master. I probably would have yelled at my dad, blamed the camera man for something, and then maybe kicked a dent in my truck door. Just kiddin' - it'll be that much more special for fightin' you.
