I have trained Kyokushin for 7 years and the most useful thing for self defense is that fighting Spirit and though body you get form that training ... Downside is no head movement .

Just add it to a certain point in Training if it suits you. Shouldn´t be a problem if you stay stable.

totally right, kyokushin needs at least 1-2 tranings per month with head punches just to get used to the fact that you can't just charge at the opponent to punch him in the belly. Did this mistake a few times and it costed me dearly ;)

Sandro is the real deal....a very accomplished martial artist who has worked and trained many elite level fighters.I've had the privilege to take many of his classes and a few privates and always left inspired.A true gentleman. If you are in the Montreal area and want to learn striking check out his classes at Tristar gym in the west Island.

I definitely think Kyokushin can be a great base for street self-defense although I never knew that was how St Pierre got started in the arts... Although he's not Kyukushin but rather Shotokan, one of my favorite UFC fighters is Machida and he demonstrates great basic and traditional attacks that have been super effective. I agree though that the best defense is a good offense even on the street as it's more than kind of hard to mount a great offense when you're getting pounded with merciless punches and kicks to your legs.

I would like to train Kyokushin for self-defense and fighting but I already have a background in MT, Boxing, and Jiu-Jitsu. Not sure I would rely only on Kyokushin in a street fight but with some Boxing or Thai I think it would be of value.

In truth Kyokushin is a mix of martial arts. If you can look at the idealogy of Sosai Mas Oyama, you will realise that. Although he brought in the element of strength training and not being afraid to get hurt. Kyokushin fighters are ready to get hurt and to push forward. Infotunately if you fight a Kyokushin fighter that is serious expect that he or she will keep on coming contiously

Mix it with boxing and Muay Thai and you should have Dutch / Japanese kickboxing.

There was a local black belt in my area who used to get into bar fights regularly that usually ended up with him going to jail and his opponent going to the hospital or just being fucked up or KO'ed. He was around 6' and lean with some muscle but people tell me he refused to fight in his own weight class in competition and would only fight heavyweight and in Kyokushin you fight several people in each tournament. That's a special kind of crazy so I think Kyokushin would work in the street especially if you already have other skills like Boxing or MT.
