Him and his family will meet again and hopefully, the rest of us will to. Bless this man..also I feel the loss for the other passengers on that same flight and their family's. My heart goes out to them all. Such a great loss on earth in the meantime.

Sadly, Kyu was a passenger on the ill fated JAL Flight 123. On Monday, August 12, 1985, a Boeing 747SR operating this route suffered a sudden decompression 12 minutes into the flight and crashed into two ridges of Mount Takamagahara in Ueno, Gunma Prefecture, 100 kilometres (62 miles) from Tokyo 32 minutes later. Casualties of the crash included all 15 crew members and 505 of the 509 passengers; some passengers survived the initial crash but subsequently died of their injuries hours later, mostly due to delays in the rescue operation. It remains the deadliest single-aircraft accident in aviation history. Amazingly, before final impact, Kyu was able to pen a note to his wife and family expressing his love for them and his regret in dying. This note was one of the passenger artifacts found by rescuers amongst the crash site debris.

The decompression is because of a faulty repair. At 6:47 PM, a picture was taken, showing the vertical stabilizer missing. There were 524 passengers at the time, and 520 died, including Kyu Sakamoto.

When I first heard this song on the radio at a time when we were so poor we could not afford a TV which were all black & white in those days, it really made me feel sad and hauntingly followed me until I grew up and heard it in Greece which was used for an opening song in a series. So glad youtube came out and found it with difficulty as I did not know the title nor the singer of the song. Shame he died so young

"I gaze upward as I walk" is the translation of the first line of the lyrics. Spent two years in Japan and that's one of the only things that I was able to remember about the language. It's actually a very sad and beautiful ballad....

It was a sad dy on my birthday August 12, 1985 the day the plane he was traveling in went down. The worst air disaster in history. I wanted to learn the words so I played the lyrics version and I learned how to sing it. I think his death had something to do with his video of the barrels and the factory. RIP Kyu♥
@lypilapa6 жыл бұрын
I already sang the song in it's foreign language and shared it on my channel here is the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6WznaGvo86gpZY of course, I did it phonetically cause I don't understand Japanese language. Indeed, this was the worst air disaster in history as you said.

I met him in Japan in the early '80's when I was working there. I recognized him in the elevator of the Shinjuku Hilton and took him out to dinner. He was a gentle and kind man who put up patiently with my stuttering Japanese and fan worship of him. Like you, I was devastated when that horrible accident occurred and ended the life of this very wonderful man.
@petertaylor36006 жыл бұрын
This is ridiculous. I heard the song now and then at the time it was first released and didn't take much notice of it. Now I simply can't get enough of it. It's addictive, possibly also, because of what happened to him. He has a sob in his voice that is irresistible.

@2004mojo4 жыл бұрын
The song was re-titled " Sukyaki " when it was released in the US here in the states when that has nothing to do with the song. An African -American Group called A Taste of Honey added English words to the melody and had a hit with "Sukiyaki" in 1980. I also read African-American singer Jewel Atkins (a man) used the melody in a song called "My First Lonely Night" 1966. I'm not familiar with that one.

sukiyaki is a japanese stew. has absolutely nothing to do with the song, no mention or reference to it in the lyrics. the american record company that released it was just looking for a simple japanese title that american kids could pronounce.
@KrGsMrNKusinagi07 жыл бұрын
One huge problem most people cant pronounce it anyway.. LMAO
@feinstei6 жыл бұрын
It was actually named "Sukiyaki" NOT by an American, but by the president of the British Pye Records label. Capitol in the US released it under that name, but it wasn't their fault that it had that idiotic name.
@petertaylor36006 жыл бұрын
Which doesn't say a lot for the intelligence of people whose only knowledge of Japanese is food. How pathetically dumb of them all. But after all they are the people who confused Austrla with Australia.
