This the Japan Kyudo Championships in the beautiful Shiseikan Budojo at Meiji Jingu (shrine) in Tokyo. While Kyudo can be a contemplative martial art, it can also be a fiercely contested tournament where top masters compete to be the champion of Japan.
Music is by our good friend Baptiste Tavernier.

It is necessary to understand that Kyu-do is not a bu-jutsu (fighting technique) but a bu-do (mental technique based on fighting technique). And the Japanese art of Kyu-jutsu is that *if you are always calm, no matter what the situation, if you and the bow are one, and if you can repeat the same action, the arrow will be released with your awareness and head for the target* without thinking. It is similar to Zen or meditation. The difference is the use of tools and the release of consciousness outward. I like the feeling of drawing the bow down, and after the outline of myself becomes fuzzy, my consciousness leaves with the arrow. The target is a confirmation that I was really following the rules of the art. Naturally, I am happy when I keep hitting the center of the target, but I think it is more enjoyable when I analyze myself and think about what I should do when the arrow is heading for the same place and when it goes off the target.

The act of hitting the target in Kyudo is only one of the criteria. It is based on very detailed basics such as how to walk, how to turn the arrow, from stance to shooting, the sound when shooting an arrow, the gesture when shooting an arrow. Don't judge only by the accuracy of arrows. by JP.

I remeber I wanted to kind of hold the tradition of an Indian man making a bow so i made one and I found out I lived doin it so I ended up doing it as a hobby for about a year. when I made my first bow it was awful 😂 too short and I used the wrong wood. About 10-20 of em later I started using maple and cutting them a lot longer. I got good at whittling and i started to use sandpaper. Even put oil on it and ran it over a flame to hold the shape I wanted. I HIGHLY recommend doing it it's so relaxing, interesting, and when ur done u have the world's best toy 😂

Actually I prefer this archery to what they have in other competitions because this is the traditional bow and arrow vs modern day compound bows and arriws. @@leobuzz212 is traditional weapons were flawless then why did we make them better? Doesn’t make much sense really. As time evolves so should our customs, laws, and other things. Humans were built upon adapting so why slow it down to preserve a worthless culture when new and more beautiful cultures can spring anew? You can keep the customs but if it holds you back from evolving and adapting then your customs are outdated. You can always refresh the customs and learn the history of where it once came from, that way we don’t hold ourselves back and anyone who wants to know the history of the original customs can. Such is the reason why writing down history for whoever wants to know about it in the future is far more important than pretending that the preservation of them is important.

if it wasn't for the freak tsunamis the Mongolians would have destroyed Japan. their arbitrary honor prevented them from confronting invaders in a war where the other side wasn't another Japanese army with arbitrary honor. this is why peasant revolts were catastrophic. poor hungry people don't fight with Honor, instead desperation, and the Mongolians fought for conquest, the Japanese fight like war is art, but only because the high class fought petty wars and wanted their deaths to have equal vanity. the samurai commanders tell their army to remain honorable while they're eviscerated, knowing that if another commander challenged them they'd die in single combat instead of a wave of spears. the high class thought they were above the peasants, the Mongolians would have taught them otherwise.

Some things cause confusion and discontent, especially against the background of history. For example, remembering the "Nanjing massacre", not a kind expression on their faces is perceived as ridiculous and inappropriate. During the Nanjing massacre, the Japanese, who fancied themselves samurai, and went crazy with impunity, competed who would cut down most, ordinary Chinese citizens in the city of Nanjing. Of course they are not archers, but the choice of weapons will not change the essence.
