Does anyone remember waking up listening to kyw waiting to hear if your school number would called! The days of being a kid!

The sound of the teletype machines at work in the background!

Harry Johnson had a great sound. I trained under him in 1990. So much copy back then. Nice to hear Bob Nelson again; one of the most distinctive voices ever in Philly radio.

This 40-year-old aircheck from KYW 1060 of Philly is far more enjoyable to listen to than even one minute of 106.3 WORD (WYRD) where I live (because it's actual news, and not just opinionated talk).

Coincidentally, not only was there snow that evening to cause local travel worries, and an icy cold winter that year that complicated recovery efforts for the tragic plane crash into a bridge in Washington, DC, but this clip of that evening's news on KYW includes report of an incident at my local Kmart (35 years later it sits an empty store) that remains a part of township lore among longtime residents. The report notes injured shoppers and employees were taken to the nearby hospital that has also since closed. Our populated suburban township rarely made the local broadcast news but it took a disgruntled fired employee from not-very-nearby Germantown driving into the front doors of the local Kmart to garner the attention of news radio. Note the quiet calm that used to be KYW - the commercial breaks are fewer and so much more relaxed (and local) than you hear on the same station today. I think KYW Newsradio 1060 AM and the "Place to Relax" - WDVR/WEAZ (101FM) - were battling for no. 1 in the Phila. market back then.

Ultimately, the crash was caused by pilot incompetence. A failure to turn on the anti-ice system during the treacherous conditions and also engaging in other stunts that didn't follow the normal procedure.

1010 WINS in New York, into the 1990's, had marine forecasts before the TOH. And it too was Group W.

@ 2:05 Mr. Sports mispronounces the Edmonton goalie's name. It's really "Low." Can't help suspecting the teletype in the background was a continuous looping tape. I worked at a radio station in Oklahoma that did that.

The ~750 Hz, :00.5 duration TOH tone seemed to be a leftover from the station's days as an NBC affiliate, no?
