Malaria has a reduced impact on individuals with thalassemia minor because their abnormal red blood cells provide a less suitable environment for the malaria parasite. Additionally, genetic factors associated with thalassemia can enhance the body's immune response to malaria. This protective effect likely contributed to the higher prevalence of thalassemia in malaria-endemic regions.
