I met Phil in my late teens. I was working and the guys popped in for a bite to eat. Phil was so polite! They waited patiently while their food was being cooked... none of us had anything to do but wait. They were working on a new song & Phil sang it to me "Kiss my love goodbye I've had it with your lyin'.." He sang what they had put together & asked me what I thought of it. I told him I needed a song like that in my life & he gave me the most brilliant half-grin ... I knew he was 'trouble' haha! Great group of guys & I'm grateful I got the opportunity to meet them!

I always liked Phil and his power ballads, I wish that he had done more. If you haven't listened to his solo album, I recommend the song "Not What U Take (Acoutstic Mix)", it's one of my favorites, along with songs like "Crystal Eyes", "Ballad of Jayne", they show the band can do the soft and quite rhythmical stuff, that other metal bends can't or are unwilling to try.

This song really isn't a power ballad it's a country cross over rock song , I like alot of L.A. GUNS they kick arse ✌️👍🔥🎸💯.......

Not sure why I'm just running across this but I digress! It's funny he said it was a country/rock crossover. I remember not too long after the video came out, my mom was watching CMT and a country singer made a video at, what I'm pretty sure is the same location. I don't remember the singer, much less the song (I'm not into country music), but I remember seeing like a few seconds of the video and thought "holy hell! That's the same place Ballad of Jayne was filmed at" and I have never found out if I was right or not. I've even done some research and can't find any info on the location it was filmed at at all!

It is. Kelly the bassist was watching an MTV special about Jayne Mansfield after writing the song. He then wrote the lyrics and the melodie. Phil wrote the last verse.

Yeah and kelly is right. Saw an interview from 1989 with kelly and tracii. The Interviewer was asking about "the ballad of jayne" and everyone seemed to agree that kelly wrote it after watching an MTV special about Jayne mansfield. He and mick had written the music to the song and phil came in with some lyrics that didnt fit so kelly took it home and wrote the lyrics while watching the mansfield special on mtv. Kelly also said that Phil wrote the last verse to the song.

Why don't you ask "honest honorable" Phil WHY he blatantly STOLE Paul Mars Black's music (with help from Tracii Ulrich-Guns' help of course) and then proceeded to change some lyrics and call it his own. The band then used majority of that stolen material to create (and sell loads of) their first album. But that's not all. Phil continues to this day to badmouth, run down, and demean Paul Black's artistic talents, his singing ability, and his so called "reason for being kicked out of L.A. Guns years ago", in the media. To this day, this guy Lewis is sooo insecure and ungrateful for what he was literally handed on a silver platter, he can't help himself from discreditting the guy he replaced and stole music from. Phil wasn't satisfied with just stealing Black's songs, his vocal style, and his place as lead singer of L.A. Guns. That wasn't enough. He actually has the audacity to criticize Black (unprovoked) for years everywhere in the media. Paul's life, his career (being buried in lawsuits for years over the stolen songs cost him any chance to further his musical way with later bands), his everything was destroyed by L.A. Guns, and specifically the band's label,Tracii, Phil, and even Steve Riley later on. These guys are as dishonest, disrespectful, and pathetic of human beings as you can ever find. Yet their "fans" gloss over all the bands' shortcomings and act as if they are some class act. This band has had absolutely NO integrity or care or respect for other musicians or human beings in general. And I am only making reference to thir horrible treatment of Paul Mars Black. L.A. Guns has hurt, mistreated, and betrayed MANY other musicians/artists over the years. But hey, they must think that their rewriting of their own history/past/bio will cover their asses for all the horrible things they've done and all the people they used and hurt over the years...>

Yeah... well... you shoulda just left it with the Jayne Mansfield theory. Cause now it sounds unfamiliar, made up for no reason, like Poison's Unskinny Bop. And why would you spell Jane "Jayne" if not for the Mansfield theory? While a great song, learning that it has no real meaning now kills the feels. Notice how [*Billionaire*] artists such as Taylor Swift DON'T have songs made up from filler words? I still love this song and the band but... sad to learn this was nothing but fluff.

Well, I'm happy Tracii lost the vote. It's a great song. Wish there was a real Jayne story though.

Never trust what a man says who wears eye liner makeup. They are all indoctrinated in 1 for the lie and 2 for the show. His physiology looks like trying not to incriminate someone. Caveat it's one of my favorite songs out of the sad ballad genre. The music video is convincing to tell a story of an exotic beautiful woman departing. "Shame" implying foul play. Kinda funny like a dream - they were under some influence doing too much. Things ain't always what they seem - Surprised only a few know the truth. Time can't heal a broken gun - Jayne was shot. The song just seems more like a literal story than it does how he describes, "It was just an exercise in song writing." Whatever never or did happen to Jayne has had me praying for her since 1989. 🙏
