L.A. High School Maptivists Research Social Justice (short)

Every year, eleventh grade students in the Math, Science, & Technology Magnet Academy at Roosevelt High School, in the Boyle Heights community of Los Angeles, do a "Service Learning Project." Working in teams to investigate a social justice topic, they engage geographic information systems (GIS) to explore, analyze, and present their data. Led by the social studies and English teachers, students build a deep understanding, which they present to the community.
This segment premiered at Esri's 2018 User Conference, as part of the "Making a Difference" award ceremony, in which Esri President Jack Dangermond gave the award to lead teachers Mariana Ramirez and Alice Im.
