Few suggestions: 1-have a TQ out of wrapping and somewhere you can grab with either hand. I've found the issued TQ pouch works great to keep it fairly clean and can be oriented vertically or horizontally to molle (on harness straps like the ones you have too if you don't mind it there). 2-check out the ifak insert pouches by Refuge Medical. The Bearfak one would fit the 200 saw pouch, keep things organized, hold an additional TQ and is easy to pull out without handfuls of components flying all over. You can even talk to them and make a custom order or even have full custom kits made up for your specific wants. The Bearmin insert also fits the issued sekri ifak pouch for what its worth. Awesome people too. 3-pepper spray, not for people but if its a recce rig it can help with evasion from dogs on a scent trail. 4-veil netting for while doing observation 5-small bottle of 91% Isopropyl alcohol. Not only is it an antiseptic and flammable, but use it on your feet to help dry them out without getting globs or sludge build up like foot powder eventually does. I use it before every ruck and it helps cut down on any blistering, even when I broke in new boots via wet soak rucking 6-flatfold duck (style) tape on an old gift card. I know you have some already but when it can be used for medical, repairs, fire etc its worth the extra bulk/weight of a compact card wallet, you can never have enough duck tape 🤣

@@boonedockery7220 you must be a grunt. We think a lot alike. 2 more things I came up with - 1 - a dummy cord on the multitool. It serves 2 purposes - 1 to get it out of the mag pouch more easily and 2 to keep from losing it. There is plenty of room in the bottom of the pouch for about 4' of 550 cord. Just leave a little sticking up to grab onto. 2 - you can make tabs for the bottoms of the mags like the Magpul ones using 550 cord and 100 mile an hour tape. Put a wrap of tape around the bottom of the mag, loop the 550 cord in an easy to grab loop, and finish wrapping with 2 more wraps. I have that on my USGI issue mags since the 80's and it is still going strong.

Rhanks for sharing. For batteries - storacells are best but will need to be dropped in a bag for waterproofing. Shim the batteries using electrical tape (taped to the carrier not the cell) or with a cutting from a broccoli rubber band or ranger band with a dab of super glue to pin it to the carrier depending on how much wiggle there is in there...cut weight dramatically by reducing the count of subloads - reduces fabric and container weight. Dry bags with compression vents are good for cutting bulk and rattle because they squeeze everything together in there, just don't put anything sharp or hard edged in there. Put all your bags and packing material on a scale with no contents it will change how you think about organization.

-It seems like you have three or four spares of a lot of things, when two would do. Especially for your 10 C's. I suggest you lay out all of the contents organized by the role they fulfill (emergency blanket, fire starting, etc) and determine the top two performers of each to retain. I think you would save a considerable amount of weight. -It seems like you have enough of certain items for only a short period of time (ammo, and water come to mind) yet others seem to be timed for periods of time closer to a week (the four sets of socks) I suggest you define a clear time period of which this rig is built around for, so you can more accurately plan things out. Especially when bringing ammunition, just having 100 rounds (4+1 20 round magazines) seems very very light when you're in an element without natural cyclic support. -two tourniquets are the minimum for most GSW based IFAKs, so you could easily add another in a TQ somewhere external for easy access, like beneath your sidewinder -You can probably drastically reduce the packed size of your swagman roll by getting a dedicated compression bag for it. This, along with reducing the tertiary backups of other items and redistributing the load, should let you free up your back entirely, allowing you to use a removeable assault pack to increase your on body water and carry mission specific items such as a helmet/NVG case or wet weather considerations/more ammo

The Postman had been surviving for several years with his ruck sack containing toothbrush, tooth powder, foil with some food, and such and they stole it from him. So I start from there and my Alice pack is also very heavy. I figure I can easily shed stuff as need be. I like seeing a heavy pack and having it explained to me. Then I can pick and choose. In that respect, this is one of the better videos. The other irritating thing with most other videos is "This is my get home bag, this my bug our, this my inch bag". But when say, the EMP hits and you start walking home, you discover that part of town is in a riot so you had for the woods, then discover that you really need to be way our in the country and constantly moving due to marauding gangs. Point being, trying to have various bags for various scenarios is not possible to guess. I like a big big bag in the car. If it is not in the car, it may not be accessible for the duration. My back seat is the Alice pack covered with a blanket along with shovel, ax, tow cable, jumper cables, Dewalt Power Pack, fire extinguisher, etc." A year ago the national debt was $16 trillion and is now $30 trillion. How long can this hold together? Prepare. Please. Do something, grab a pack somewhere and start watching videos and writing down the commonly shown items and forget Christmas, stuff your pack. Also, I have several packs in case other people (family members) show up. They can carry some two.

At 27:00 you mentioned the batteries rattle within that case; I find that when I put 2x AA, 2x AAA, and one CR123; the batteries are just snug enough to fill the gaps and not make noise. I’ve also noticed you use a lot of extra nylon pouches inside other pouches; great for organization but it adds a lot of extra weight. To keep things together I’ve tried to narrow things down to tape and rubber bands. For example: the notepad, just tape the pen/marker/pencil to the top of it. Not saying it’s wrong, but the weight savings is nice on the back.

Check out the smaller unit too. They can run on 123As or AA/AAAs, can be clipped practically anywhere, have a fitting to secure to a helmet, and can also come with a headband. If you get the headband, get an extra, that way you can remove the band and use the poly mount it clips to and secure it to your chest rig/plate carrier. That allows it to swivel vertically instead of horizontally (really helps for moving around where light is permissible or map reading under a poncho), and you can easily swap it around depending on how you need to use it. I did have to remove a little material on the clips of the mount to get it to go around the stiff material Crye uses on their SPC. I love that dang thing. I keep the mount on the center of my carrier, and mags still clear just fine. For using it on a harness, I just clip it on the shoulder strap or anywhere out of the way (depending on what I’m using).

Two words SMOCK CARRY! A lot of the items in pouches should be on your body as you may have to ditch your webbing/belt kit and move quickly. Tourniquet, Israeli bandage, chest seal, compass, head torch, small rations, water purification tabs, blade, gloves, lighter, cordage, etc should all be on your person either in your smock or cargo pockets. Ditch the hi-vis back pack in favour of a reusable orange bivvy bag it can be split to line a shelter, place a casualty in it or as a bivvy for you in extreme conditions. Didn't see a water filter? I recommend Sawyer mini plus puri tabs. All suggestions made with respect John. Kit is three layered, pack, belt kit, clothing and anyone of which should sustain you for 24hrs at least in varying comfort levels. Also hot drinks chocolate, coffee or bullion stock cubes plus a hexamine style stove for emergency use. Surgical spirit hardens off and sterilises blisters and wounds, just a small bottle. Half a roll of matt gaffer tape at least, flattened down. Scalpel blades. Right I'm getting on a plane! Lol. Nice kit, needs tweaking. 😉🏴

I'd migrate that radio to your right side somewhere. And the saw. Or add a set of hand clippers up there somewhere. Best thing in the world to trim sightlines silently while you lay and watch whatever it is you think you'll need to watch. I'd also trim down the squad size FAK some and use the extra space for things you might want to move from the back or you find and need to carry away. Same for the 200 rounder on the right, free up some room and migrate the poncho up there instead of keeping it on your back. Or maybe plan to stuff it into your cargo pocket or something. Should be more accessable, looking at it from the assumption you're not going to want to take it off till you're going to bed. Always useful to have some stuffing room in your front gear so you dont have to drop it all and dig out your extra bag because someone ran away from some perfectly good rations or ammo or whatever you're planning for. Also, as an exercise in curiosity, you should weigh all your little sub bags together and consider how much you might like them on day 3 in the middle of the blaring summertime jungle steam for adding weight you can't eat, sleep under, or use to defend yourself.

For your lighter put a small piece of fitted plastic between the gas button and the body of the lighter , secured with a piece of tape so it doesn't get pressed while it is packed. Use cotton balls to silence your battery kit and your wire . You could use the attachment straps on the side of the butt pack for USGI canteens or water bottles. Good to see your paying attention to noise on your kit. I’ve found that when you remove a mag from a 100rd saw pouch the other mags rattle around allot. I’ve used 200 round pouches and lay them flat. Personally I keep allot of similar gear as you in a pack. I only keep my mags and fighting gear on my kit. These days I’m running the British PLCE and a load out of AR10 mags. I run PVs14 and a thermal monocular. I don’t even carry a flash light. Like I said all the bushcraft toys stay in my ruck or pack. When i carry a carbine I carry 16 mags. When I carry my DMR I carry 8 mags.

I find it curious about how people make a big deal about mag pouches making noise (such as having velcro flaps). The way I see it, if you need a fresh magazine it means that the one in your rifle has been emptied. I've never never encountered a magazine pouch that makes more noise than a gunshot, even suppressed.

@@ianslaby5703 yes you’d need to sew in dividers. I usually keep spare loaded mags stacked in the 200rd pouches and feed my mag pouches on my support side “left” side of of my belt kit. Thank You Sir! Do you adhere loop Velcro to your magazines to help quiet them when they are on their side? I will lay out my recon rig philosophy in a pinned comment after I read all of the comments and disseminate them. I was a Cav Scout in the early 80's and what we used for recon was extremely rudimentary compared to what they use today. We had the LBE, but for the field I preferred the older canvas LBE, much quieter and the H-Harness didn't tangle like the Y-Harness. We hadn't started using 550 cord to back up the ALICE clips (which I hated!). As I researched contemporary RECCE loadouts, I felt VERY OLD, and Blown away with what is considered typical kit. Our IFAK back in the day was a compression bandage we wore on our LBE suspenders, that was it! After reading all the comments and taking many pages of notes, I'm going to completely restructure the loadout. I have worn it a good bit and it's extremely comfortable. Look for an update video in the Spring. Thank You For Your Service, and have a blessed day!

If you can carry it, run with it, and sleep with it on, in your AO, then cool. The eternal conundrum of : not to much nor too little, and not too heavy or bulky but not to light in weight or to small. Your recce rig seems to be set up more for camping. Ammo, water, medical, comms,, a few snacks, warming or wind and rain layer a must. Recommend wearing a day pack instead of a sustainment pouch. that way you can access it. Carry a GI canteen, cup, and hex stove. Carry a hydration bladder or main water supply and filter.
@nick44162 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. For a 72 hour kit I would think water, food, ammo, coms, medical and some extra layers depending on the season. Most of the other gear is great to have but adds weight and is more long term / camping items. If I’m in my AO I don’t need a map, sewing kit etc. I would think in terms if scaleability and not compartmentalization. Depending on what your doing scale up or down.

very cool rig. I am working on a get home bag/rig my self. I had some recommendations for your kit. 1. swop 1 of you water bottles for a sawyer 24oz filter bottle. you did not show any water filtration capability. and maybe a blender bottle for drink mixes. 2. i would have gone with higher magnification monocular then the optics on your rifle. if they are the same power you could just use you rifle mounted optics to glass. 3. i would definitely dummy cord the monocular. 4. why don't you have a radio pouch on the rig?
@boonedockery7220 Жыл бұрын
I will be replacing the Nalgene bottles with a Hydrapak silicone 1 liter water bottle that is compatable with the Katadyn be free filter and a Large Grayl water filter. Both will be nested in the Self Reliance Outfitters bottle cups. For my neck of the woods, which is very hilly and densely wooded, The magnification is adequate for my purposes. The range finding radicle was a big selling point which my scope lacks. Having them both at the same magnification made sense to me, that's why I chose it. Of course, I may learn many things in my kit won't perform as I had planned and I will have to modify. I will dummy cord the monocular. Thank you for the suggestion! As of now, I am running solo. When I find a like minded team member, the radio pouch will replace my GPS pouch. That GPS is a little too large IMHO anyway. Thank you VERY MUCH for your input it is needed and greatly appreciated.

What's that plastic cylinder w/the tape & repair kit? I had the same idea, but the PVC pipe I got for it is too big & heavy. One thing I started doing is adding the total weight of all bags, pouches, belts, buckles, straps etc; dead weight used only for carrying my stuff. Then I try to reduce that and/or include as much functionality to my bags as possible: At least 1 dry bag for water & air pillow, a leather for stropping & hot pad, a bag for filtering, something with a signal color, cotton for char, wool beanie for hot water bottle, etc. Oh and Faraday bags are on my list, good call.

If you ran 30s I would suggest the eagle 1x3 mag pouches. It cinches them down with elastic so there is no rattle and has velcro and a buckle, keeps the foliage from ripping the pouch open. Love these harnesses, super comfy. I know the buttpack ain't exactly "cool" or "high speed" but once you try one it is hard to go back. Waiting for Fireforce to get that buttpack in stock with a color other than black. I love the capacity of the recon style one (mini Alice pack) but it is Chinese, floppy and tries to ride low no matter what I do and it's black.

The Magpul ranger plates may be the better mag “tab” option. The wrap around ones make the mags wider and then tend to get hung up on each other, especially in that SAW pouch set up. I have some on my M1A mags and they do work great for grabbing the mags but they can be shit disturbers when it comes to logistics.

I think some black med gloves, chest seals, and maybe and extra TQ in a holder/pouch on the opposite side... Other than that some single tab purification tabs or a sawyer filter/dirty water bag unless i just missed it lol (they also fit some of those Nalgene replacement dual cap lids if you HAD to grab n go with untreated water) and for cold weather or possibly year round I think some trioxane bars and a 3-4pc flat or full size folding trioxane stove may be worth the weight. (Don't have to worry about alcohol storage or evaporation like a denatured mini stove). Also you may want to check out the new Sionix Opsin for about the best "affordable" (ha $2,500!) and high performance digital nightvision on the market that comes close to real gen 2-3 intensifier tubes and is factory made for helmet/field use instead of a rigged up monocular, although the previous Sionix Aurora and the Aurora Pro monoculars are now discounted since everyone wants the Opsin... Anywhere from $500-$1000 for pretty darn good, useable digital NV setup (helmet mounting adapters and hardware up that discounted starter price though)... Awesome video, awesome setup 👍I'm definitely going to borrow several ideas from your pack that could make mine much more streamlined and well rounded while still keeping all the 72hr+ emergency survival sustainment capabilities... Thanks!

the batteries would drive me insane. 😂 i just put a couple slices of toilet paper folded as a little packing buffer, and it also will help act as a rudimentary dessicant as a last stop gap measure for any vapor that possibly finds it's way in eventually. i also do this with all my flashlights or lanterns, anything that uses batteries that i'll be using and moving around. it absolutely needs to be solid for me, no rattling or moving parts. i've even taken things apart and siliconed parts together, especially contacts or wires, any mechanical connections that take physical force. or say, the bulb contact. no reason to allow corrosion or contact wear. it solidifies and just buttons things up. it really brings things to that next level of durability and protection/ longevity

Brilliant rig. A few humble suggestions: your extraction rig should include some glow sticks on a string and a whistle. Your nav kit has no pace beads? Interesting! Do you not use them? I have designed my rig with a front chest pouch that has four D-rings and carabiners for quick removal when taking off the rig. It has a concealed carry rapid access behind my drop-down admin pouch that I carry my nav kit in. This enables a rapid access poop kit where the nav kit sits. Finally, since you do not want to use fire, I would strongly suggest replacing one of your steel bottles with a water filter capable bottle and also carrying water purification tablets. PS, your Gerber Strongarm is also the knife I have on mine. Good call:)

Hello Brother, That is an awesome video ! The only thing that seems missing in my humblest of opinions is an Espressomachine 🙂 It looks to me (on my screen) that the compass that goes with the firesteel, is broken ? at 31:56m. for the rest a very instructional video with lots of great idea's for my own pack. On the batteries, drop that goofy whatever they are battery carrier. I have one of those and I keep meaning to throw it away, it's bulky, doesn't carry very many batteries and as long as I have it, I'm tempted to try to use it. I long ago moved over to the "stor-a-cell" battery carriers. I do a lot of stuff at night, and I'm always burning through AAA, CR123's and CR-2032's. Two quick notes: I think you've got too much extra stuff that's probably not adding value to make up for it's weight, and depending on your goals, you probably don't have enough ammo. The second thing, you proibably want to have a radio pouch up front for your baofeng, even if you plan on keeping it in your buttpack until "deployment" I see a lot of people with that radio just clipped to their gear, while not particularly valuable, the intelligence value someone might get after finding your radio could be a big deal. Get a pouch! Also, for the baofeng, there's now a USB charge cable that can be used with the extended batteries (plugs right into the accessory port) that will charge them up, it's about $8 on amazon.
