No - thank YOU! Literally man, this is THE best channel on KZbin. Seriously, as well as being super intelligent and interesting, your channel also provides amazing social and emotional support. I broke up with my girlfriend last week after having been with her for 3 years: it's been a massive shit-storm of emotions, but your channel has really been the only thing that's making me feel better. I must have watched every video like 4-5 times in the last week alone. For God's sake keep doing what you're doing! Much love x

I read « là-bas » in French last summer, I can tell you that it's a difficult read, Huysman is known for having used the French language in ways that others haven't and his command of the language and vocabulary often goes over my head. But, I was able to follow what des Esseintes was doing in that book. I plan on reading À rebours soon. I am finishing Soumission right now.

I stumbled upon this channel due to the fact that I was searching for a review of my favorite book of all time, Fernando Pessoa's Book of Disquiet. I was and still am stunned by your fantastic, insightful reviews. They're always either great suggestions or a really good articulation of what I think about a book but could never express that well. Keep up the amazing work, it's much appreciated!

Awesome video and awesome channel. Thank you. Being French I read La-bas in French. I absolutely love this book, it is one of my favourite novels ever. Beautiful writing, great story and wonderful ideas. And Houellebecq... great contemporary author, Soumisson is one of his best (up there with Extension du Domaine de la Lutte and his biogrophy on Lovecraft).

Thank you for all of the recommendations, you have inspired me to start reading and getting into litterature aswell as expanding my vocabulary since it isn't my first language. I have picked some of the books, but I haven't had the time to read them yet, but I will after my midterms. Now that I have rambled for far to long I just want to tell you to keep doing what you are doing! Thank you for the great recommendations once again.

Sometimes heard Huysmans was a one-hit-wonder. Does not seem to be true. By the way, if you're still a fan of Borges, you might want to check out Macedonio Fernandez' 'The Museum of Eterna's Novel'. The novel speaks for itself, but if you want Jorge Luis to persuade you - "I imitated him to the point of plagiarism." Kudos to you from Switzerland, love both channels.

"Better than food whisky reviews, could that be a thing [really really really hopeful look]" I was laughing out loud... BTW, it is said that water (just a bit of it) brings out the flavour in whisky, so that is one of the reasons people drink it with ice and wait a little bit. One can just add a bit of flat water in the glass instead. This comes from a really well documented book called The Drunken Botanist. Woot! Cool book segue, too!

Huysmans and whisky, that's a guaranteed win! Happy anniversary and thanks for all the nice books you made me discover. And yeah, Huysmans is "that great" in french. You should try some André Gide or Nicolas Bouvier if you can! Maybe some Buzzati, too?

where are you from? Here in Mexico is harddddd to find Huysmans except for a few copies in the Library... and not all of his work. Recently i bought À vau-l'eau and I'm so happy for it, but i would love to have Là-bas and Against nature. By the way, I don't know many booktubers but the ones I've seen only review department Store books, you're the first one I see reviewing pretty decent authors, congratulations.

This book has a few different translations, I was wondering if anyone could tell me which translation is best. To my knowledge there is the 1924 Keene Wallace version, the British publisher Dedalus has Brendan King do another, and Penguin Classics has the Teresa Hale translation. Does anyone have any recommendations which to try?

So I just started this book, the translation I got seems very obtuse in it's writing style. I noticed that you have a different version of the book though, mine was translated by Keen Wallace. Disappointing. Yours was translated by Teresa Hale though, I want to buy that translation and try it out.

I'd love to help you with your French, but I wouldn't be an adequate teacher haha. I'm currently learning Italian and I'm just amazed by the fluidity of the language! The grammatical structures and the feminine and masculine words are so much more easier to remember because the rules are repetitive. French has so many exceptions! It's tricky to learn, but it's a truly beautiful and rich language. I'm glad that it's my mother tongue (I'm from Montréal but people tell me I've got an international French accent). Being bilingual is so rewarding on so many levels, pursue it whole-heartedly, you won't regret it! :D Nowadays, we have many useful resources (Duolingo, KZbin videos, textbooks, etc.) Thank you for your reviews about this author, I didn't know him. I'll check him out when I'll get the chance, he sounds brilliant! I'm always excited when you review books originally in French because I can read and enjoy the original version hehe :3

I have an old hardback of 'La Bas' on my shelves with around 10 or more years. Starting it tonight! I found it while trying to (unsuccessfully) dig out my copy of Houellebecq's 'Submission'. So 'Submission' will have to wait until after this one. If 'La Bas' beats Mirbeau's 'Torture Garden' in its decadence, then I'll go dance on someone's grave at midnight with a bottle of absinthe.

Nikka Whiskey is excellent. I am so happy you've made it one year and hope to be with you for many more. As for donation incentives I am happy with how you currently do things - just keep putting out quality content that is worth donating for and occasionally giving your patrons thanks; it can be a bit unsatisfying when you donate to someone and they are unappreciative. Can I ask at what stage of your life you read most of these books? I was raised believing in Science and Science alone - it was only in University that I started appreciating the Arts so I'm a bit behind!
