cont'4 starting at 3:58. to have balance, you have to have an axis. And to have an axis central and vertical, in fact that is our spine, we have to place our chest correctly. You see on the side that the back of the ribs are going upwards. Ribs in the back are higher than in the front. So, idea that we are pulling up by pushing the chin backward and the ribs/chest forward, in fact they are pulling down. Pushing the chest out. In fact, that's what you did.

I just love this idea that the head should not be tilted back (as you imagine you need to do) and the thorathic cage needs to be up at the back, lower at the front -it does makes sense when you think about it!) I also love the way he said that the arms don't push down towards the floor, but in fact, away from the body (with space between chest and arms -again, a discovery after many years of ballet, because how many times do you hear a teacher tells you to push the arms down with your shoulders to maintain the balance?) Too many times, that's how many!! ;)

cont'd 2 This skull which weighs 6 to 7 lbs will press down on the vertebra, it will crush them. The neck, the back becomes very immobilized, very rigid, and all the micro movements of the head to stay on balance will not be enough. Many people think that the head is attached here (back of the skull where he shows), but that's not true. It is attached here (shows it at the side of the skull on the ear level). It is attached high in the middle of the skull, so much more centered.

cont 5 And also, once you were on balance, you tried to hold it there. It isn't about holding/maintaining the balance, it is about continuing to think directional. Your head is moving upwards, and front. Your arms don't press down, but think of them as moving away from your body. The more fluid you are and the more you think, in which direction your energy is moving, your balance will be better.

Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom Wayne. As many of the others dancers below, this approach is new for me and it totally freed my body and my dance, so there is not enough place here on youtube to say thank you ! I am not a ballet dancer but oriental dancer, but I think every dance shares language in common. In my dance, the bust should be up and in front, many teachers say, but it creates tension and who can dance with so much tension ? (some also say me should have tension in the fingers and imagine an egg in the armpit, who can dance like that ???) Also, as I do abs and hip work, I observed that not only this position frees the torso, but also the hips and stomach. It is so true that when you can have the right position of the body at the begging you can dance anything and it is true for every dance. Warm regards to you and please continue your videos, I'm a big fan !

i will try to translate. we start with Oscar who will help us better understand balance and what happens in the body when we work. For me, the problem with balancing is found in the skull. Dancers in an effort to lengthen (raise high) the head (or what they think lengthening up, pulling up), they will place the chin back (like he shows with pushing the chin back). But what happens when they do that in the body.

cont'd 3 So what do we do to have successful balance. We have to think, i emphasize the word 'think', the head will move up/away and go up and forward instead of going downwards and backwards, up and forward. What will happen in the body? This up and forward will pass through the vertebrae, it will make the body in the back lighter, more available for movement and balance.
