Just to add to the comment, you can use "negro" as a racist insult just like in the states, but as my friend above said, you can hear almost everyone calling negro to their friends, family, kids without having that racist meaning. I think is pretty normal for us in South America calling "Negro" or "Negrito" to someone we love. Some people even call "Negro" to a white person with european roots just because.

Jut for you to know: In Argentina, we have another meaning for "negros", there are 2 commonly ways of use . first, we call negro in a positive and loving way (mostly) to refer to another person. It's like "dude" or "guy". We can say "negro como estas?" (like: dude how are you?.) negro also refers to some people that listen cumbia, dress in certain way and do some other stuff (like drinking tetrabrick, that is wine) BUT IN EITHER WAY IT'S NOT ABOUT SKIN COLOR. (I'm not saying there is not racism in argentina but here those two meanings are the most common for negro) Here we have a lot of expressions, we call "gordo"/"gorda" or "gordito" (which literally means fat in english) in a loving way. Also we use "hermano" or "hermana" (that means brother or sister) to someone that we just met. We talk very confident with people. it's cultural

The word "negros" refers to lower-class, or working-class people in Argentina. According to the story, lots of workers went to the presidential house to claim their labor rights many years ago, and the president's wife saw many small black heads from the balcony. So she called them "black head". Since then, the word "negro" (or cabeza negra) was adopted by the poorer social classes. But it's never used for racial discrimination. That doesn't exist in Argentina
