Make a slip knot with your yarn. Hold the yarn tail in your left hand (or right hand, if you're left-handed) and make a loop with the yarn in front of your thumb and index finger. Insert the crochet hook under the loop, grab the yarn tail, and pull it through the loop to create a new loop on your hook.
Pinch the yarn between your thumb and index finger of your left hand (or right hand, if you're left-handed) to hold it in place. Yarn tail should be behind your work.
Insert your crochet hook under the top loop (the older loop) on your hook.
Grab the yarn with your hook and pull it through both loops on your hook. You willnow have one loop on your hook.
Repeat steps 3 and 4 to make a chain as long as you need.
